I have
received several emails and PM's regarding the Metra Wiring
Harness ad mounting kit(pocket). I have done this write up and
the end-all-be-all fact sheet. Using the wiring harness to add
an aftermarket head unit allows you to keep all stock wiring
and components, saving you from a complete and sometimes
costly rewire of the entire system. If you are an audiophile,
using the amplifier integration kit is not for you. Sound
quality will be better over the factory head unit, but some
people may experience some noise. I used the kit, because I
want my all-trac to remain as stock as possible, and the
system 10 sound is still awesome compared to almost any
factory system on the market today. I kept factory speakers
and added a single 10" IDQ in a .5 cubic foot in the trunk. I
would say the sound is just as good as my 2004 Highlander with
the full premium JBL system.
Metra will tell you that
they don't make a wiring harness for the 90-93 Celica with the
system 10. This is incorrect. 70-8112 is listed as TOYOTA
AMPLIFIER INTEGRATION HARNESS 1992-UP. Compatible Vehicles:
Lexus ES300 4DR Sedan 1992-1995. (But, it will work on the
1990-1993 Celica Sytem 10.) NO PICTURE AVAILABLE
The
same is true for BEST. Their part number is BHA-8112. Listed
as 15 Pin Premium Sound w/RCA 1992-1999 Toyota.
The most factory looking pocket to use is Metra's
88-00-8000 - TOYOTA POCKET USE w/FACTORY BRACKETS (APPS PG
32).
 or BEST
also makes the BKTN2150 - UNIVERSAL TOY/NISS/ACCORD -
POCKET. NO PICTURE AVAILABLE.
Please note: These
harness will say 1992 and up; however they will work on 90-91
also. There is only one exception. A FEW(not all) 1990 Celica
GT-S and All-tracs had a System 10 that had a single din cd
player with a serparate single din tape player stacked on top
of each other(thus, naking a double din.) These systems had an
addition harness and will not work. If your unit is a single
piece, double-din unit, it will work.
Additional note:
Using this kit will cause some minor hissing. This is because
you will be utilizing speaker wire which is unshielded, unlike
aftermarket RCA's. Plus, you are sending a different quality
source signal to the factory amplifier. Turning the volume
past 1/4 volume will cover it up completely. On the good side,
there is no engine revving noise(whining) at any
volume.
Good luck.
***Please make a sticky,
because I am not writing this up again. We all know the search
engine sucks. ****

Great write
up, was having a hard time finding info on this. One question
tho at the end i got a bit confused with the double din thing.
I have a 90 GTS with the cd player on top and casette under
it, i've replaced both with the pocket and my kenwood deck.
Will this harness work with my setup to everything working
again? I think what i read was it would but just checking.
Thank again

To be honest, if you had a two piece cd and cassette, I
don't know. I have never actually looked at that setup
personally. It should unless the car's audio wiring harness is
different. I doubt toyota would make another type of harness,
unless it was updated completely in '91.I had an extra harness
that was never used, maybe it was an inline splice by the
factory to accommodate two seperate sources. The easiest way
to tell would probably be to see if your cd player and
cassette player connect via a jumper. The best way to know
would be to buy the harness and hook it up. It is doesn't
help, then sell it in a forum. I am sure someone would buy it
to recoupe some of your $.

This is true for some 1991's as well. I think it is
dependent on the manufacture date, because some 91's have been
successful and some have
not.

I'm in the
process of upgrading my head unit! An Alpine CDA-9807. I tried
the Metra 70-1761 harness with no succes. I have a 1990 GTS
and I'll be getting the 70-8112 harness for this tuesday.
Here's a pic of the rear of the Toyota HU:
And here's the wiring on the dash:
So hopefully the harness will work and the pics to be
a reference of what it works and doesn't!!

the 70-8112
will not work with what you're showing above. some of us
unlucky ones have connectors that cannot be 'adapted'. trust
me, i am going through this process right now. you can rig it
(email me for exact info - i will save you lots of time), or
you can hack into the wiring, or you can rewire the entire
thing.
I made a custom adapter to connect an
aftermarket HU into the system 10 amp/speakers. it's not been
easy and it's not down becuase I think i fried tha amp and am
in search of another one. I am about to give up and rewire the
entire thing. this
blows.
