Default Just bought a new JetPack...

    I shall call her Thumper.
Thumper is a PMSing 1993 Celica GT-S 5spd. (so says the vin)

I refer to my cars as Jetpacks.

6 things you should know about me:
Female, Florida, Risky, Gnome, Adventurous, and it sucks to suck.

Now that that's out of the way, I shall take you on my newly started journey.

I saw Thumper crying for a loving owner... I pressed the clutch, turned the key, and off we went! She made me smile from ear to ear After the spin around the block I noticed some hesitation after she warmed up.

Previous Owner states the following: Thinks bad TPS (because that's what the internet says...) Bad passenger motor mount (in agreement, horrible vibration at standstill) New spark plugs (NGK) wires, and distributor w/ cap. (Ebay speical? idk) Blah, blah, something about blah, can't keep the car, blah, blah bitching wife, blah. Car is sitting on four brand new tires with nice rims with a 5th spare tire no rim. (worth more than the price I paid for the entire car) Secondary TPS (junk yard special) extra passenger door handle. no interior or exterior missing (score!) Driver side window works nicely, passenger and sunroof ehh they'll go out soon. Drive Side door locky no worky.

She's so happy when she first wakes up from a long nights sleep (cold start) idles beautifully, shifts smoothly, purrs happily. Then she just gets so tired so quickly. (N.O.T., normal operating temperature, she starts to jerk violently/hesitate and loss power/bog down)

I noticed there was no idle stop screw... put one in helped the hesitation a little bit. did the ghetto TPS test (unplug and drive at N.O.T.) helped a little bit than did it again. Tested the volt (4.8) and ground (good) plugged back in.

Gnome and I changed the Fuel Filter (Original with 211,429 miles!! holy hell) Helped a lot but didn't solve. Checked the fuel pump (fairly new changed back in 2010 so says the receipt and visual inspection believes it)

Ghetto rigged wires in engine... (I'll post pictures of my Professional-Master-Tech-Inspired-But-Still-Ghetto repair) They effected the three sensor things on the upper radiator hose (someone tell me what each one is reading left (drive side) to right (passenger side) Alternator wiring harness (connector crumbled in hand, OMG guys.... I was a dumbass and didn't take a picture of the alternator wires so I felt like I was defusing a bomb! !!FWIW, BTW, FYI!!! Reading from firewall to bumper installed and connected it's YELLOW,BLACKw/RED(bluew/red for 94+),WHITE) Fixing these wires helped make the jerking less violent.

First time on highway (before fixing the wires): Does great for about 10 miles then started to jerk horribly (first sign) pulled off immediately. checked basics under the hood. No coolant loss, no oil consumption (still the same) wont start!! "click click click click sucks to suck!!!", says Thumper. I call for back up and let a tear shed in defeat. Tell Gnome my situation. blah blah 10 minutes, jump start doesn't help. Installed idler stop screw (just noticed while tinkering with the TPS) 15 minutes, "click click.... nothing.... sucks to suck!!!" Went potty, ate some food, blah blah 20-25 minutes. "Okie, I got my cat nap. Purrrrrr" does great for another 10-15 miles. "putt putt putt" Loss of power, jerking, ok good. Hit stop and go on I-4....... complete loss of power car shuts off going up a little hill (stand still). get car in a safe place, wait an hour. "click click click click click............" Not enough juice. Road side assistance came and helped with a jump hour and a half since shut down. (didn't think it was going to work, I thought it was just having hot start problems. hind sight thinks it was the alternator wire causing the battery to need its jump) Finally got to Gnome to pick her up. Drank coffee, waited an hour before starting, Ate sushi, waited another hour, got on highway, putt putt (not as violent) exited, waited another hour.... see the routine? Every time it started to putter I shut it off immdiately and just waited.... I had to make it home though... a few more times and we finally make it back to my place.... I got over zealous and put way too much faith in a car I just bought for $800. Blinded by love if you will. next day she fires right up and runs sooooo beautifully. Gnome and I go get coffee and take Risky, my love(german shepard husky mix), to the dog park. Let it cool down. Go get the fuel filter and strainer. (I don't usually through parts at cars unless its general maintenance parts) Starts to jerk on the way back (less than 10 city miles) Gnome installed the fuel filter while I checked the fuel pump. We went and got Acetone in a can, (electrical cleaner) Heat shrink tube, and liquid electrical tape for the Professional-But-Still-Ghetto-Fix wires. While the seats and clothes were off of Thumper. Gnome gave her interior shell a deep clean.

Next day, today, I checked the coolant sensors wires (good) and the sensor reads resistance (dont know if its with spec. didn't want to remove it til I get a box wrench) I tested the TPS while it was disconnected and checked the wires(5 volt and ground. dunno bout the other two), haven't checked the actual TPS as it still did its hesitation and jerking. Unplugged the ICV/ISC? Idle Control Valve Idle Speed Control same thing??? OEM PART# 22270-74100 RAN LIKE PURE LIQUID HOT DOG SHIT YOU HAVE TO PICK UP.... plugged it back in and jerking went away (for now) but now I have a low surging idle (TACH's capacitors need to be replaced, showing 1/3 of actual RPM)

Which brings us to the right now! Sitting inside Thumper, smelling dinner, talking to Gnome, and writing to you...

My questions, where in the hell should I start to trace this problem? Spark plug wires? They're new but I think they're an E-bay special. ISC? TPS? what other closed loop sensors? 93 GT-S doesn't have a MAF, right?

If this was too much to read.. well.. sucks to suck!! Seriously though, Thanks for all your time and input. It's much appreciated!!! (sorry, if this thread had a better place to be)

You may want to check the ecu capacitors. These are starting to get plagued by the 90s capacitor problems. The other thing I would check is the coil. They can get hot and weak and get better when they cool off.

    Welcome.

Female eh? You may of wanted to keep that to yourself around here......

(kidding...sorta. Watch out for the bears though).

Second -- the car not starting after driving for a while is referred to as the 'hot start relay' issue. There's a trigger wire that runs from the ignition cylinder to the starter. When you turn the key, this wire is energized which in turn connects the +12v from the battery to power the starter. Over time this trigger wire oxidizes. When the motor/engine bay/wire is at temp the resistance is too high for the current to make it all the way. The solution is installing a simple 30amp SPDT relay in place. Here's how to wire the relay in.

The sensors on the water neck by the distributor I think there's only 2 on the 5sfe motor -- one is the water temp sensor (which powers the gauge in the car usually just 1 wire) and the other one is the cold start thingamabobber. The cold start one mounts horizontally (facing the front of the car) and the other is a vertical mount.

    Oh...and like the internet says....

Is it just me or are there no pics in the thread? (Legitimately asking)

Also, I would grab a coil setup even if it is testing ok. They get old and made of fail and junkyard special ones are going to be just as bad even if they work as a temporary band-aid.
The relay thing Tim posted about is also worth looking into.
Lastly, see if you can pick up a spare ecu from a wrecker and determine if the issue lies there. If it doesn't fix anything, just return it.

My bad. It wouldn't let me post URLs yet... (9 more days of being a member) I thought it attached the thumbnails though. When I get to my computer I'll put them on a third party website or if someone wants to PM me their email they can post it to this thread?

I'll do some research and see what junkyards have the ecu I need.

The "relay-thing" that block is the started relay? Am I added an inline bus fuse? Or am I wiring it to a spare fuse in the fuse box?(idk what SPDT is, sorry! Just getting a grasp of electrical)

Single pole double throw, most common relay. That should fix the starter clicking.

There isnt a fuel pump relay. It runs off the circuit opening relay on the 5sfe.

Really phone.... Thanks for the term. I was just going by the relay cover label. I asked autozone for a price on the fuel pump relay for a 93 Celica. They said $70? I'll believe y'all know what you're talking about over them.

It starts and drives even when hot now. Haven't taken it on the interstate yet. I ran all the gas out and put a half a tank of 93. Still acts like a loss of power.
I'll do everyone's suggestions when I get the time! Thanks for all of your input. (:

Instead of throwing money at random problems -- start a full tune up on it.

Judging by your first post you're not 100% sure what or what not was done. So start with a good tune up (plugs, wires, cap, blah blah blah blah) and just work your way through each system slowly to verify everything is OK.

hahahaha Captain.... You'll know when the Captian comes around. You're just talking to Timmah.

I agree with Bugs and Timmah on the starter relay. We just had to replace ours, as the relay itself was old and starting to work intermittently. I would upgrade the big 3 (grounds) as well. I've seen bad grounds cause some wonky random issues.

    Good Luck!
