    Default gearbox swap s54 > e56

Anyone in here with knowledge about the e56 gearbox?

I“m going to swap from my oe s54 to an e56 because I want the lsd. My conserns are about the axles and the clutch. The s54 axles are 20 splines gearbox end, and 26 splines hub end. Input shaft is also 20 splines.

I“ve read somewhere once, that the e56 has shafts with 21 splines in the gearbox end, and also 21 splines input shaft.

    Can someone enlighten me?

Chances are you'll have to make a hybrid axle. For the Celica folks, there's a lot of E153 transmissions being converted & swapped into a FWD application (typically replacing the S53/S54 transmission). When I did this i used the E153 inner axle stubs and the St165 outer shafts that fit the hubs. Don't ask me the spline count...I don't know offhand.

As far as the clutch goes you'll need the pressure plate that works with your flywheel and the clutch disc for the transmission. You'd want a S54 pressure plate (to connect to the S54 flywheel) and a E56 clutch disc.

If you're just looking to get the LSD, try getting the Toyota helical LSD made for use in the S54, C56, C60 transmissions. Also used by Lotus in their 1ZZ/2ZZ powered cars.

41301-20230 Limited Slip Differential (helical type)

It was used in the MR2 Spyder/MR-S and JDM 6th & 7th gen Celicas

Hybrid axles, thats what I feared. Cos I already changed a cv joint on one axel as it was klonking. But then again, now I know how it“s done:-) If I can just get hold of the e56 axels I“ll make hybrids. I have 2 new cv joints.

Don“t think I“ll go the TRD/Cusco helical way. Guess it“s much more expensive. I can get a e56 box for around 400$. Then I have to get the Axels on top of that, but as far as I know lsd“s are much more expensive.

I have the FWD E56.....you'll need hybrid axles as Tim mentioned. What else do you want to know?

The used toyota helical LSDs show up on ebay occasionally and sell for $500 to $600. It would require a complete disassembly of the transmission to install, but would not require any custom parts.

Thanks for the info Guys. I might look into the helical lsd option then. Quite a lot easier as I“m having problems finding axles for the e56.

Will a lsd from a MR2 Spyder, Roadster or MR-S“99- fit?

Yes, it's the same part# used in the Celica SSII & SSIII running Beams engine and S54 trans.

Thanks Fusselbug, I just went through your previous answer, great info there.

I now have the choice between a s54-06d (helical lsd) with axles, and this MR2 lsd. Both at good prices, but of course the s54 will be heavy on shipping.

The full trans is expensive to ship, but the LSD will require complete dis-assembly of the trans to install. I guess if I was going to rebuild the trans anyway, I would buy just the LSD. I would also swap the 5th gears with those from the S51 for lower engine RPM at highway speed. (part#'s 33428-32040 & 33336-33020)

I“m almost decided on the lsd from the MR2. So if I install it in my s54 gearbox, it will actually become a s54-06d?

All I need to do is to swap the lsd with the oe diff? no further parts needed? (apart from the 5th gear if I feel the need).

If you're breaking open the transmission, make sure you get a gasket/seal kit (04331-32011) and the FIPG (00295-01281) to put it all back together. The differential bearings may need to be replaced and you'll also want to inspect all the gears and syncros to replace any worn/broken parts. Otherwise you should be able to reuse original parts when reassembling.
