Default Convert the alltrac trans for the GT swap

I know someone with an LSD for e series I think would fit the alltrac trans. Can anyone point me to an old thread here or elsewhere that covers this or just give me the basics? Is this something I can attempt at home or should I get a trans shop to do it?
Been thinking about mr2 trans but I already have an extra 185 trans so why spend extra?

Experiences, opinions etc. appreciated. The one turner burner fury must end at some point! lol Though it is kinda fun, makes your car feel a lot faster than it is in a weird I know nothing about cars but if a tire spins its fast kinda way that is still deep in my mind lol

    Bugs did it.

You basically just have to swap the differentials, the axle cover (need one from the MR2 trans), and you have to drill out the shift selector casing, flip the shaft and cover the old hole with a freeze plug and some FIPG.

Theres more to it than that, but not much.

You sure you have to drill the 185 trans to put in a FWD car?
I thought that was only if you're going MR2 - FWD or vice versa.

You have to pull the entire trans apart to get the diff out. Then you have to get the diff apart, put the new one in the housing and make sure everything's still good to go clearance wise. Putting the cover on instead of the transfer case should be cake.
Not the hardest thing in the world but it's not doing your brakes either.

You shouldn't have to change the linkage as its all on the same side.

Thank you guys for getting the ball rolling. If it does not require any special tools I hope I could figure it out. Just need some feeler gauges to check clearances? I do not see why I would need to the shift selector but I know nothing about this yet so...

What do you mean 'special tools'?

    Here's a transmission:

Once you remove the the cover to 5th & reverse you see something like this.

You'll need to remove the C clip and then 5th gear syncro assembly and then you can remove 5th gear. You'll need the Toyota SST or jerry-rig a gear puller to get the 5th gear clutch hub off. Once that's off 5th gear just slides off.

Here's a picture with the Toyota SST removing the gear.

After 5th gear is removed, you'll use another SST or gear puller to pull reverse off (after of course you remove the lock nut).

Once Reverse is off you'll need to remove the plate & C-Clips (I can't recall if it's one on each shaft or just one). Either way remove the plate and make sure all C Clips are off. There's another bolt or two that you'll need to remove before the case comes off.

Once you split the case, you'll see this.

The differential is the big ass thing on the right. You'll need to disassemble the shift rods & levers and pull them off bit by bit as you work your way down. The differential is the last thing to come out. While you're in there it wouldn't hurt to check out all the syncros.

Pictures are from Eric6 on MR2OC with my experience in tearing down the E153 myself. These pictures show a E153 teardown but the Alltrac transmission should be pretty close.

You'll need some T bits (Torx) and the gear pullers to successfully split the transmission case. Also use the Toyota Red RTV when you're re-sealing the case.

Wow that is more than I could have hoped for. A pulley puller is not too bad I think I can handle that. I just always think of like axial and whatever else play micrometers I always imagine transmission shops having. I guess that may be involved in the re-assembly?
First step is see what hes looking to get for this thing and if he wants to trade anything. lol
Whats an acceptable price range for a stock mr2 one?

Wait...are you talking about converting a transmission from an alltrac or from an MR2?

If it's the MR2 transmission you're looking to convert to work in your celica then you need to forget everything I said up there and swap the shift linkage around.

    Tim, good info.
One thing though; both of the "top" gears are 5th gear. IIRC the one with the syncro is the drive gear and the smaller one is the driven gear.
    Each "gear" has 2 gears.
Except reverse, it has 3. One on each shaft and the short one that has a "mushroom" on top. It's slid up by a linkage and has no snycro.

You want to be careful what puller you use, you need one that will thread into the snycro and then the gear. The SST is best if you can find one.
And take your time and label everything. Don't take the synchronizer apart, it can be difficult to get back together.
The Toyota manual will make this much easier too.

Also yes, what Jeremy said. The 5th gear syncro is a PITA to re-assemble

When I had my E153 I had to take it apart due to incorrectly reassembling it. I put the clutch hub on backwards (whoops). I picked up a couple gear pullers from Harbor Freight and was able to make them work. It wasn't easy, but it worked. Just make sure you get the right thread pitch when you go to pull them off.

I would turn that scoop around ASAP man, the IC needs airflow.

Did the IC fit under the stock hood? I didn't think so when I looked at a 4th gen engine. That's one of the reasons I went with a 205 engine.
    But I never physically checked.

LoL I went through all the trouble to cut it off and weld it on backwards so many years ago why would I do that?
No it will not fit under the hood. I have a nice stock hood with completely intact insulation I could not bear to destroy, probably going to use it on the alltrac depending on what happens.
I also have another extra hood with an insanely ugly almost Subaru style aftermarket scoop but I could not bear to rock it. You need to remove the insulation and part of the under bracing part of the hood to fit the stock IC. Also the stock alternator connector hits the hood. I had to put on a 205 alternator.
I see what you are saying but as cold as it is here I don't know how much it matters right at the moment. BTW some cars have the intercooler located behind the radiator and ac condenser, so it seems as long as you have good air flow it still does its job. Thinking about putting a fan ontop of it but I really do not feel like going through the hassle of hooking up the front mount and clocking the turbo building a wastegate actuator bracket etc. etc..... sigh

"This diff is from an AE101 4AGZE JDM Corolla Levin with an E58. I believe the early turbo MR2s used an E53, right? biggest diff would be gearing I think, I know the later turbo MR2s got a different trans. probably had those multicone syncros you mentioned."

    Compatible?

It won't work with your 3s.

It'd work with a wedge motor/transmission but not with the e153. Off hand you'd need new axles. I don't even know if the diff will work in the e153 case to be honest.

A wedge is a term that some folks call the MKI because it looks like a doorstop (wedge, space wedge, etc).

So just for future reference as I watch the sales forums what am I looking for exactly? Mr2 turbo transmission or is any SW20 transmission the same? Been a decade since I owned my MR2T.

SW20 is the chassis code. Look for a 1993 or newer MR2 turbo transmission (e153). This one has dual cone syncros.
