    Default Transmission swap

    I might be buying a st205 trans and want to swap it into my 185. Problem is I don't have a lift or knowledge to drop the engine and swap in the trans.
    I was wondering if anyone was near the west texas area (Lubbock is where I'm located) and would be interested in helping me out.

    I can only give you pointers.
    - rent/borrow/buy an engine hoist
    You can do it without it but you'll need about 2 feet if clearance coming from the bottom and then be able to bench the trans (heavier than it looks) and somehow mate it. My first trans drop I did t use a hoist and I was able to remove it but putting it back on was a whole different story (ended up dropping the engine)
    - disconnect everything and tag everything
    Use tape and permanent marker to mark the tags of what was disconnected or removed. Use zip lock baggies and write what they are too. Don't overlook this, some people think its anal but I'd rather do it right. Just be careful of the wiring harness loom (lh passenger side) and disconnecting the fuel line. Those are in somewhat tight spots and can be difficult to reach.
    - if you're going to drop the engine you might as well get new seals (engine and axles), tune up, idler pulley, water pump, hose from hell, etc. You should inspect your trans fork and replace the throw out bearing. Check your clutch and flywheel. If funds permit check out Speedsources braided clutch line. Its almost impossible to put it on without dropping it.
    - Expect at least a weekend for your first drop. I can do it in about 8 hours solo and its still never really fun.
    - Please, at this point hopefully you've decided to drop the engine, take the time into how the trans is mated to the transaxle. After removing the bolts and flywheel cover its easiest to lift up the end of the bell housing so it tilts, twist it then pull off. You can do the traditional method of hoisting it at an angle and letting gravity do the work but it also damages all kinds of things. Gravity is still your friend so if it has to come off it has to come off.
    - putting it back on can be HELL. You can do the traditional silo method (engine cover facing the ground, putting carpet under it so it doesn't crack) and let gravity do the work or if you remember the tilt, twist and push method that works. It works better if you have some muscle because after a while of fighting with it you'll appreciate the extra help.
    - Above all take your time and try it. You'll appreciate your car more; if not at least hate doing it.

    I would just add to swear where it is needed, don't hold it in you'll burst. Better still make a swear jar and drop in $5 each time and this will fund all the seals and new clutch, and if you do it just right you may have enough for new rims . Seriously take your time Sifu gave great instructions, it just takes time walk away if you need to because it will test your patients .

    I used a hoist to hang the engine from, and then used a motorcycle jack to lift the transmission up to working height. It won't do the work for you, but its a lot easier to only have to pick up the tranny a few inches, or to be able to rest a corner of it while your fighting the other end on the car. Still took me a strong buddy, one to hold the engine in place from swinging and work that, and one to mess with the transmission. Be sure to read the BGB and look at the diagram for mating it, there is a method as Sifu mentions and it can be hell without it. I recently had a Toyota dealership pull my engine and separate the tranny, and the guy handling it, well versed with 3SGTEs and MR2s, still took him the better part of an hour and 3 or 4 other techs because he wasn't aware of the procedure. It won't go in without the proper angles at the proper spots

    On the other hand, it's really not that hard to pull the engine out with the transmission. With help, I had the engine/trans, out, trans swapped, other items cleaned and replaced, and the whole deal put back together, in the engine bay, mounted up, fluids flushed, and ready to roll in a 3 day weekend.
