    Default 3rd gen...bad iacv?

    (gen3 3sgte with Antronic SM4)

    I found the problem (I think) to my previous post where the car idles for 5 seconds and shuts off. The iacv isn't fully engaging and I can hear the solenoid clicking about 10 times a second because it can't turn the valve. I took the solenoid part off (held by two screws) and tried to manually turn the metal stub in the TB...it turns but it is hard to turn and there was a little rust build up. I'm not sure if the solenoid is old and worn and can't turn the valve, or if the valve is stuck because it's old and it can't be turned by the solenoid. Either way, it's not moving. I tried spraying some lubricant and it didn't seem to help. Is there a replacement part that I can use instead of the gen3 3sgte one? Or do I have to try to find a gen3 iacv? Part number on the white solenoid part is 22270-74230. I have a 22270-74290 off of a 5sfe (either 98 camry or 95 celica) that I can play around with and I should have another one off of another 5sfe (either 98 camry or 95 celica). I read in another post that there is a 22270-74210 that will fit too. Have you guys tried swapping these out? Do they function the same even though the part numbers are different? And is only the solenoid swappable or is the valve part swappable too?

    I have a few different IACV's off 5SFE's and I put them all on my gen3 3SGTE and it worked fine.. what exactly the difference is, I don't know aside from all the different part numbers.

    I couldn't get one of the IACV solenoids to bolt into the IACV assembly, the bolt holes were slightly farther apart, but it still worked (by worked I mean clicked rapidly as the other one did). There doesn't seem to be any difference in the solenoids other than what I found with the bolt holes. When I disassembled the 5s IACV and the gen3 3s IACV, the difference that I noticed was in the spring strength. The gen3 3s IACV springs is thicker, and stronger, which is understandable due to it having to open and close under boost. The 5s spring was very weak. 5s IACV assembly had water flowing through both passages, 3s IACV had one of the passages blocked off from the factory. The solenoids look interchangeable, and from what I noticed they are interchangeable. It can be better tested on a car that doesn't have an aftermarket computer running it, but they should change out fine. This is all I know about them, maybe it would benefit someone who stumbles upon this post later on.

    oh, and as far as the operation of the IACV, when it is disconnected there is a gap open. I think when one pin is energized the solenoid closes the valve, and when the other pin is energized the solenoid reverses the pull and full opens the valve. From what I know about how these are wired, the middle pin is 12v positive from some kind of ignition switched power supply. The wires on either side of the solenoid and each positive and negative from the ecu. I'm not sure which is which. The manual lists how to do a resistance check on it also.
