Question Air, fuel spark? Dead on the road...

I am tooling down the road, minding my own business. Chaos has always been in tip top shape engine wise. I have had no prior warning signs or any issues (other than an occasionally weak battery.) Today she stalled out on me for no reason and refuses to start. She is turning the starter motor trying to do her job, but she just won't catch. This leads me to suspect fuel or spark. I pulled the wires off the cap and I did not see any hint of a spark, I pulled the boots with the cap attached and stuck a screwdriver down, laid it across the head and still, no spark. I have heard others mention the sensor or something inside the dizzy going bad and giving issues like this. The car is still on the side of the road (damn AAA) and I have not had a chance to fully diagnose the cause of the hissyfit. When I get the car home I intend to check the fuel line and all fuses. If anyone has some information to add that might help me diagnose what is wrong with my baby, please feel to add it.

Chaos is a 1990 ST for those that didn't already know.

Pull the dist cap off and see if the rotor is turning when you try to start the car.
If it is, check for 12v on the positive terminal of the coil.

could be a timing belt.. that just happened to me monday.. the lazy way to check for that is have somebody crank the engine while you look down the oil fill hole to see if the cam gear turns, if it's not turning while the engine is cranking the timing belt is bad

Then you have other issues causing you to burn coils.

This looks like a common trouble on them. Mine did exactly the same thing, stalled with oil light on, would crank but no start. Today i found out: my ignition coil is dead.

ignition coils going after 12-15 years is no great surprise.

personaly, when i buy an old used car over 10 years old, i replace all the ignition components straight away for new stock. i run injector cleaner, do a coolant flush and oil change.

also, for those with crunchy gearboxes, i topped mine up with oil - couple of days back and it runs very very sweet.

i'm kind of a noob but is the ignition coil the wire that goes from the dist cap to whatever its called (center wire on dist cap). When I bought new spark plug wires from toyota it also came with the center wire on the dist cap.

The ignition coil is internal on my car, I am not sure about the 5SFE since I haven't had to mess with one in a few years.

I am being lazy so I am gonna just let Chaos sit for a while and enjoy her break, this also gives me the motivation I have been lacking to finally fix my throwout bearing in my Mustang... Oh laziness is my curse. I will most likely tinker with Chaos this week and let everyone know what is up. I am hoping it is the coil and not the timing belt, both are simple fixes but the timing belt would just take longer and involve more hassle and then I would want and adjustable cam gear since I would be there anyways... So let's hope for the coil. I got her towed home the other night (at midnight! Fuck you AAA!!) and her battery was dead from sitting on the side of the highway with the 4-ways on all day... So she has sat there like that since. Have I mentioned I am lazy?

For the 5sfe, there are 2 types:
    1990-91 = external
    1992-93 = internal

    I have a 92' and I bought a coil off ebay as a spare.

Unfortunatly I got a 90-91 external coil which is garbage to me.

So if anyone wants it for 20 bucks shipped they got it.

Bah! It was the timing belt. And my Mustang just spun second gear and blew the throw out bearing... Why is this never easy...

You might have busted the throwout bearing retainer. [on the 'stang]

Chaos is up and running again. I fixxed her about a week ago. My mother has been ill so I have been staying at her house taking care of her and I don't have internet access there. Took about 5 hours all told to change the belt and get her back on the road. Being the good gear head I am I also took the liberty of not putting my A/C condenser back on. I think I might have gained a whole horsepower from that. It was truly a whole lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

As for the Mustang, the throwout bearing retainer is nothing more than a small spring in the release fork. I have pulled this tranny more times than I have fingers to count on ( I am from Tennessee, I lose count after 10.) The last time I pulled it I was in a hurry getting it back in and I knocked the T/O bearing off the fork. The reason second gear spun is my own fault. It seems that when you leave a transmission sitting for a very long time without an engine to mate it to it is advisable to fill it with dope (gear oil for those who don't speak redneck) to ensure that you don't tear it all to pieces. The worst part was I knew this but it somehow slipped my mind. The good news is that I found a T-5 out of a `98 V6 for $300. But I am not sure about it... I have my eye on a 4 Door Rabbit 5 Speed EFI that is just screaming to be turned into a canyon carver...

Anywhos, thanks for all the help guys. Sorry it took me so long, but shit is rough right now...
