Forum: The right (and wrong) tools

Discuss all the tools for your project: what you use, what you broke, etc.

  1. I couldn't help myself...

As much as I HATE our snap-on dealer... he came and demoed a new tool... I couldn't help myself...

  2. I need a decent, preferably cheap air compressor.

I just need a compressor that will have enough CFM to push a decent impact. Cheaper is better. Must be able to zip off tire lugs, flywheel bolts, etc. Typical stuff. Doesn't need to be able to break stuck CV nuts or anything. Any suggestions? I know absolutely nothing about compressors or air...

  3. Input on welders

So, I am thinking I want to get a welder soon. The last time I welded was over a decade ago, and in HS lol. With that knowledge in place, what would people recommend for type (MIG, TIG, etc). Odds are this will be a harbor freight purchase since they seem to have the lowest prices and this is...

  5. My Christmas present to myself...

I have four cars - and a one car garage. Of these four cars, which are all Celicas, three of them are "keepers" and one is for parts. I will be needing to really get my hands dirty after the holidays - as I have to pull some engines. I had some big ideas about putting up a beam in my...

  6. New (old) flaring tool

I have this rust bucket Corolla that I am trying to get setup for my step-son to use - and it has rusted brake lines. So I have tried patching in some extensions - with limited results. I remember when I worked on my Plymouth cars - I redid all my brake and fuel lines from scratch - and I...

  8. New Harbor Freight 90 amp welder

I was at harbor freight last week and noticed that Chicago Electric had replaced the old line of 90 amp flux core welders with a newer version. So I opened the cabinet on one to see what was changed. Unfortunately there was no rectifier so my hopes for the switch from AC to DC was shot down. No...

  13. Pneumatic tools

Whats your preferred make/style? I'm using a Kobalt set right now. 1/2" impact wrench, 3/8" ratchet, and a few other goodies that came in the set. I need to pick up a 3/8" impact wrench (as sometimes this 1/2" is a beast to get into smaller spaces). I'm thinking of finding something around...

  14. Post pictures of your tool collection/boxes/organization (or lack thereof).

I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's tool collections, how you organize them etc. I'll be posting pictures of mine tomorrow. (Came up with this idea at 1:00 AM...) I know some of you have a pretty insane amount of tools, which are freakin' sweet to look at, so show em' off!...

  16. Preferred scan tool

Anybody got a recommendation on a good OBD2 scan tool? Not just a code reader-but the kind that reads all the sensors and gives me crap like short/long term fuel trim and pulse width,,etc? Ive been reading online and hear one person bitch about how it doesnt work on some models, etc. What have...

  19. Ryobi Drill Press

Just picked it up! Came with a full set of titanium metal bits (more than i'll need) and 2.5" drill press vice. Found it on craigslist for $100, barely used over the past couple years. The guy used it to make a dozen or so brackets for his kit car that he had in the garage. :woot: Here it is...

  20. Single most useful tool you own?

I'm curious as to what the 'go to' tool is for you guys? You know, the one tool that you find yourself using on almost every job and that always gets the job done? I'm in the middle of stripping down and 'refreshing' the engine out of my Celica, in a carpark, without access to electricity or...
