Forum: The right (and wrong) tools

Discuss all the tools for your project: what you use, what you broke, etc.

  1. Single most useful tool you own?

I'm curious as to what the 'go to' tool is for you guys? You know, the one tool that you find yourself using on almost every job and that always gets the job done? I'm in the middle of stripping down and 'refreshing' the engine out of my Celica, in a carpark, without access to electricity or...

  2. Air Compressors

Let's talk. For general use, running a nailer, a DA, maybe an impact. I doubt I will run a sprayer. Price is a concern. 120v to run off a regular outlet. I am looking at this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_470443-30449-0332041_1z10d76__?productId=50129760&Ns=p_product_price|0&pl=1

  3. Vacuum Oil Change system

Since the filter is on the top of the 3S engine and it is harder to get the jack under the car, I decided to try one for vacuum oil extractors. For those not familiar, you put a tube down the dipstick tube, pump the vacuum vessel to build vacuum, open the valve and the oil magically come up...

  4. Best portable jump starter or power supply?

I've been thinking about the harbor freight centech 5in1 because I like all the features or the Clore 1700 cause the reviews are so damn good. Anyone have good or bad stories about any brand?

  5. Fasteners!

Ok, So I have a hard time keeping track of every nut and bolt during a project. Moreover, I would often MUCH prefer to replace a lot of the rust caked bolts I'm replacing with shiny new ones. Who do you use for your fasteners? My best is always Lowes, but feel like I'm shopping in the...

  7. HF Portable Abrasive Blaster

http://www.harborfreight.com/portable-abrasive-blaster-kit-37025.html So far i've only put some Soda media through it to work on my boat, but this thing rocks so far. Some child's play sand and it should make a great sand blaster for metal parts, etc. Facime commented you can make one real...

  8. Battery pack rebuilds

I have a dewalt 18v hammer drill with one eh..battery and a dead one. I'm looking to rebuild them (I got the drill and everything for free years ago) to get better use out of the cordless drill. Anyone ever rebuild these? They're 18v NiCD battery packs. I can get two new ones for $120.

  9. Compressors - Oiled or oil free?

So, about to replace my dead compressor with a 20 gallon one. My question is, there a benefit to oiled? Or should I go the lazy path and get an oil free one?

  10. Post pictures of your tool collection/boxes/organization (or lack thereof).

I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's tool collections, how you organize them etc. I'll be posting pictures of mine tomorrow. (Came up with this idea at 1:00 AM...) I know some of you have a pretty insane amount of tools, which are freakin' sweet to look at, so show em' off!...

  13. Input on welders

So, I am thinking I want to get a welder soon. The last time I welded was over a decade ago, and in HS lol. With that knowledge in place, what would people recommend for type (MIG, TIG, etc). Odds are this will be a harbor freight purchase since they seem to have the lowest prices and this is...

  14. New Harbor Freight 90 amp welder

I was at harbor freight last week and noticed that Chicago Electric had replaced the old line of 90 amp flux core welders with a newer version. So I opened the cabinet on one to see what was changed. Unfortunately there was no rectifier so my hopes for the switch from AC to DC was shot down. No...

  15. EDU me on battery chargers

I'm clueless. I don't have one, nor do I have jumper cables. I saw an advertisement for Battery Tender products while watching Powerblock this morning on Speed. How are they?

  16. New (old) flaring tool

I have this rust bucket Corolla that I am trying to get setup for my step-son to use - and it has rusted brake lines. So I have tried patching in some extensions - with limited results. I remember when I worked on my Plymouth cars - I redid all my brake and fuel lines from scratch - and I...

  17. Harbor Freight Earthquake Impact Wrench

Bought one a couple days ago and used it to do a tire rotation today. Freaking amazing. Just as a "test," I threw it on my Crank Pulley nut today to see if it would take it off (since I'm doing my timing belt this weekend anyway). It took literally six seconds before it came loose. It hadn't...

  18. I need a decent, preferably cheap air compressor.

I just need a compressor that will have enough CFM to push a decent impact. Cheaper is better. Must be able to zip off tire lugs, flywheel bolts, etc. Typical stuff. Doesn't need to be able to break stuck CV nuts or anything. Any suggestions? I know absolutely nothing about compressors or air...

  19. Pneumatic tools

Whats your preferred make/style? I'm using a Kobalt set right now. 1/2" impact wrench, 3/8" ratchet, and a few other goodies that came in the set. I need to pick up a 3/8" impact wrench (as sometimes this 1/2" is a beast to get into smaller spaces). I'm thinking of finding something around...

  20. Tool list for newbies

Hey guys, If you don't know already I'm pretty new to working on cars and actually COMPLETELY new to owning a car! So I thought it would really benefit me and maybe some other members to create a list of tool one would need to do most jobs around a Celica. I'm going to be swapping the...
