is this just a new fad or is it something worth doing?
like the brake rotor thing...

Haven't heard of that one yet -- can't imagine why. Siping has to be exact or it really reduces traction (cutting one way) and if you want bald tires just buy used or get slicks (cutting the other way).

a lot of people who auto-x use this method in order to eliminate uneven break-in of tires and to give them optimal tread depth for their type of racing.

It depends on what you mean by cutting.

Siping refers to cutting small slits in the rubber to improve traction on wet and snow covered roads. It really does work, and if you look at any winter tire you can see it's already siped.

Shaving refers to shaving away some of the tread to reduce tread squirm under extreme loads when you're racing or autocrossing. It helps the tires to wear better.

Both of these methods of "cutting tire" were mentioned in the two above posts, I was just clarifying. I think the guys got a different opinion as to what cutting meant.
