I have been looking at eBay lately and a lot of first gen celicas have been popping up. I noticed that the engines read 4M-E and 5M-E. Now, not being an aficiando of the 1979/1980 Celica, is it possible to drop a 5m or 7m-g(t)e in? Is this common or is it a nightmare?

you must be looking at the first generation of the supra. they had 6 cylinders.

the 78-85 celica (2nd and 3rd gen) only had the 20R and 22R 4 cylinder engines.

It is possible to bolt in the 7mgte into a 2nd or 3rd generation celica but it's not just bolt in and go. Still requires some work.

However if you do pickup a 1st or 2nd generation supra with the 5mge, then the 6mge is a bolt in 200 HP. I've read that is bolt in and go. The 7MGTE does require work and modification to get running. Mainly the wiring etc.

That was exactly the same thing I was going to say.
