hi all,

i'm about to purchase a 93 celica and was wondering if anyone has any tips on things to check when looking at a car ie. anything specific that may go wrong with this particular model of celica.

any help would be appreciated.

If the car is a manual, check the gearbox shifts smoothly and doesn't crunch any gears.
Check p/s pump and hoses for leaks. these are common. as well as engine leaks:rocker cover gasket, distributor seal, cam seals front crank seal etc.
Make sure timing belt and waterpump have been replaced when required.
Check suspension isn't too soft or bouncy (most likely still original)
Take it for and test drive and do a full lock turn both direction and listen for "clicking" or "knocking" noises. cv joints are pretty common to go.
Noises in the steering and front end are common too. steering racks on high km ones get sloppy and lower ball joints too.

Look for one with low kms aswell.

Good luck with your searching :)

sump gaskets go alot in the 5S.

when you take it for a drive, 2nd and 3rd are the most likely to be on the way out..

put your hand on the shifter when you accelerate.. make sure it doesnt move too much.. could mean the GB is on the way out.

otherwise.. happy hunting..

hi, still looking for my car, almost had a nice 93 WRC but some guy pipped me :(

:wtf: Does anyone know much about the 3SGE motor. a car over here's got one and i wanted to know any general thoughts on the engine and also would there be spares in oz for it?

3sge = good reliable and fun proper twin cam toyo 2 litre :)

if you get a well loved one it will be fuss free , though ti pays to check thiongs like cam belt - when it was changed and its service history

they only came factory in 86 - 89 st162 celicas ( forst front wheel drive model ) though jap import St182 and st184's possibly have them - look for the GT or GT-R models if its a grey import - im pretty sure they have them ..

they are quite cheap and have plenty of spares backup in oz - so you cant go wrong with one

i think if its got the 3sge in it, then it should be called the st202? and yeah, thats the newer twin headlight shape :)

yeah i think the 202's were the 3S equipped 6ths. but unless it was a personal import we never got them here.

ST200 - 7A-FE (USDM ST)
ST202 - 3S-FE w.out AWS (JDM SS-I)
3S-GE w.out AWS (JDM SS-II, and SS-III)
ST203 - 3S-FE w. AWS (European GT / JDM SS-I)
ST204 - 5S-FE (USDM GT / Canadian GT-S / Aust. SX and ZR)
ST205 - 3S-GTE (European GT-4 / JDM GT-4)

You may see some codes with a "C" on the end - it represents that the car is a convertible.

Be glad we never got the 7A-FE. :ugh:
