View Full Version : Engine Replacement '78 RA40

Hi all,

This may be a repeat post, as i'm not sure if the first one went through, reistration issues...

First/second post as the new owner of a '78 RA40 LT2000 Coupe...

I'm a uni student in Australia and picked it up cheap, but the engine is very, very cooked...

I'm looking to replace the 18R-C thats in it now with something that runs on unleaded petrol, and if it performs slightly better then thats a bonus. Does anyone know of an engine that will bolt straight in to replace the 18R and will be compatible with the 5 speed manual box? (20R, 22R?)

I you could suggest vehicles that these engines could be found in as well that would be very helpful. (coronas, later celicas[RA60's?], even hiluxs?]

Thanks in advance,
Wil Campbell.

22r would be your best bet

came in the late 2nd gen early 3rd gen celicas as well as the hiluxs but the hilux gear box is different

Thanks very much guys...

So I can be certain the existing gear box and engine mounts will allow the 22R to bolt straight in? I'm not much in the position to go buying bell housing / engine mount adapters...

Toyota Truck

Since no-one else answered this, I'm going to take a guess and say yes.
Usually if it's the same engine family [ie R series] the engine mounts and all will bolt up.

well since hes looking into a direct swap, not directly for performance purposes, id say lets not forget the r series
