I have a 91 gts with unfixable body damage. I found a '87 with a blown engine. Both are 5 speeds. How much different are the engines? How many different wiring connections will I encounter?

How many different wiring connections will I encounter? Most of the connections, actually. Short answer, you can't use the 91 cylinder head without rewiring the harness and using the 91 ECU.

What sub model is the 87? You'll run into different challenges with each, as ST, GT, and GT-S all used different engines that year.

GTS to GTS.

GTS to GTS.In that case I wouldn't recommend it. You'd actually be downgrading the 87, and that one would be the most difficult to rewire of all of them. The 87 GT-S has a 3S-GE, 2.0 with the wide angle performance head, while the 91 has the 5S-FE, 2.2 with the narrow angle (assuming this is a North American car). They have very different engine management systems. You won't just be able to switch a few connectors.

Check out the threads here in the Forced Induction section about the 3S-GTE swap. It would basically be the same amount of work minus the parts about the turbo. It'd be less time and money to find a running 3S-GE to put in the 87.
