Hey guys, I was hoping you guys could tell me the easiest and cheapest ways to boost horsepower in my 5SFE toting '95 convertible GT. I'd love to hit 250hp or so to be able to negotiate passing in traffic better. I know some guys have hit way higher than that by tweaking way more than I have the time and money to do, but I'm guessing that the majority of the benefit comes from a fraction of that effort if it is like most things.

I already know about advancing the timing and running higher octane. is that as economical as some of the other methods?

No such thing as easy & cheap. If you're looking that much power go swap in a gen3 or gen4 3s-gte. If you want to stay n/a look at the red or blacktop 3sge and then mod accordingly. The blacktop is around 210hp. The Gen4 3s-gte is about 275 IIRC.

You can buy my turbo setup I had on my 5sfe :)

Manifold, turbo, downpipe, wastegate with screamer pipe, fmic, emanage ultimate with harness, 460cc injectors. Probably have a few more bits I'm missing. Pm me if you want.

This got me 200 to the wheels when it was at 10 psi, ran it at 9 tho

Yeah, there is no cheap or easy way to 250hp on a FWD Celica.

The cheapest and easiest would be a turbo of some sort. Either boost what you got, or swap a turbo engine. $2k upfront to play.

pinto, that's pretty cool. what did you have to move around in order to fit all that gear in?

Nothing, it just all fit . You will need intercooler piping and a exhaust. Also a clutch. I do have a stage 2 exedy still attached to my 5s if you wanted as well

Buy a car that is already fast.

i like the way the celica corners. and a supra is way too much money. so is a 3sgte.

...Also a clutch. that's a manual?

Yah. It will also work on an auto

The rest of the parts, not the clutch lol

In the short term the cheapest might be a turbo install, with fuel and some form of management. There are other things you can do, that won't net you really great gains like cams, engine management, valves, things like that. But that's a lot of work to do right, and not necessarily cheap.

For me, I'd do an engine swap. In the long run it will be easiest as you won't have to be finicking around with getting it to run just right. And you'd have a better platform to grow from.

You do have a point though - in terms of how much benefit you gain for the effort/$ at various power levels. So maybe you could do pinto's turbo kit for $1k (I have no idea how much he wants for it haha, maybe it's more!) A motor swap maybe would cost you $2k and get you to 250hp, but be much better to drive and reliable. To get up to 300hp you could do for another $1k probably (assuming working 3SGTE). To get to 350-400hp you'll start to need let's say $5k. To do 450hp you'll need another 5. And to do 600 you'll need even more. So yeah, it escalates.

If all you want is 250HP, I'd do a 3MZ or a BEAMS 3SGE swap. Either of those will give you double the power you have now, the BEAMS has the benefit of being easier to put in.

where are you getting 250HP for a BEAMS 3SGE?

Sorry I was going from memory, it's ~210 but I thought it was more like 240. Still a big bump from a 5S.
