So I decided I want to do track days in my MR2. My 400whp 3S couldnt deal with the heat well enough so I decided to pull it out and put in a reliable RAV4 2RG instead. Here are some pics and notes. As of 2/24/15 it cranked up and ran but I still have a few things to finish like the exhaust and AC lines.

Started with this

Added this

Put some things together.

Used a 1GR AC compressor. Bolts right up and is controlled just like the MR2 AC was.

Wired up using a 2006 RAV4 ecu and 2008 harness. I replaced the MR2 fuse box with a Corolla small box with several modifications to the wires and routing .

Used 5/8 braided hose for the heater core. Coolant nipple cap was from a 2zzge block. Drivers side radiator hose number is Gates 22306. Passenger side Gates 21701 and needs trimmed at the bottom. Coolant neck hose Gates 20896 and is trim to fit. I use a custom neck with a Morosso 19-21 psi cap. Fuel line was an aeromotive startlite -6an . It fit the stock barb well enough.

Mounted a Mercedes OBDII port next to the engine cover latch. It is probably the most fancy port Ive ever seen. It is recessed and has a door that snaps shut!

What are the odds of this fancy beast coming to play this year, will it be done in time?

I just finished this last night but my cheap vband clamp broke. :( I also tried to bleed the coolant and I cant seem to get the water to flow? I think there is air trapped in the water pump but the thermostat opened fine but all my pipes statyed cold, even the heater was cold. I did have coolant at all the bleed screws though. Im almost ready to buy a new water pump though.

Very cool setup, how hard was mounting that in the 3S bay?

donteatbugs
03-03-2015, 04:29 AM
With goukys kit it mounted easier than the 3s.

So is it now easier to retrofit a V6 into a 3s car (MR2 or GT4) than simply going up generations of 3S?

If so, that is awesome.

donteatbugs
03-03-2015, 03:47 PM
It not cheaper, but it is fairly easy. I did start with a highly modified setup already. I like the stock way this thing cranks and idles. I cant wait to finish the suspension and put her on the road.

A few notes on the Alternator wiring. RLO does not work on the Seinna alternator. It needs the 12v ALT-S wire. I cut the RLO wire from my ecu harness and tied it straight into the ALT-S wire and my charge light went away.

I also inverted my CEL so it stays off all the time unless there is a flashing code. I used a PC mount 12v relay with a ~200 ohm coil. I used the IG wire to power the coil and the ECU W to ground it. It wont work with a 120 ohm coil. W has a very small current capability. I tied the Dash CEL to the NC contact and the common to ground. This will still flash the CEL in case of problems but keeps it off with a steady CEL.

I weighed my finished rear exhaust section at 22 lbs. Its slightly longed than the Berk section as it goes over the crossmember. My Berk weighed over 28 lbs for just the rear part. I took a video but it sounded terrible inside my car port. The exhaust sounds really good free reving and is so quiet I can hear the engine over it at idle.

I didnt get much done this weekend. I did finally get the coolant to start moving by cracking the hose before the thermostat to let all the trapped air out of the system until it opened. Also hung the exhaust for the test fit. only a little hammering needed on the brackets and everything fit.

So my swap is 90% done now. The main things I lack are Cruise control and AC lines. I got a little distracted before I finished my wiring and made some short stroke front shocks. 8611-1257 koni on 7" 13k springs and no sway bar. They are awesome and well worth the money.

Pay cash for a house then.

How much changed on how it drives? Is it easier or harder to manage with all dat torque?

donteatbugs
03-20-2015, 05:29 PM
Its easier to drive everywhere except in first gear. I think it gives you extra revs when taking off from a stop that makes it really tricky with a manual transmission. It was so bad I decided to make a clutch stop for my pedal. That was a really nice mod for free. After you get moving the car drives like a beast.

It runs great still, I havent had to do anything but change the oil really. It's given me time to focus on the handling a lot more. The heat management seems about the same as a 5s. Even pulling a trailer with 2 raptor 700 quads on it in the summer with the AC on at 75mph I saw coolant temps around 195-200F. Usually its 180-185F. It will get it's real track test Dec 5-6th at Road Atlanta with some sticky tires. After that I need to focus on the Transmission rebuild. The syncros are getting notchy and I really want that longer final drive in it.
