It is here! Our new 2015 Skoda Octavia Wagon has finally arrived after 6 months of waiting.

Skoda, for those unfamiliar, is one of the oldest continuously operating automotive companies in world. Older than Ford, GM, Toyota or VW. They are based in the Czech Republic and became a wholly owned subsidiary of VW in 2000.

The 3rd generation Octavia was released in Australia in 2014. Based on VW's new "MQB" architecture, it shares much with the MkVII Golf, and Audi A3. The new base means that despite a substantial increase in length and width over the previous Octavia (placing it firmly in the mid-size class), the new model is up to 100Kg lighter.

Our car is a mid-spec "Ambition Plus" model in Moon White Metallic. This means a 1.4L turbo 4-cylinder engine good for 103KW (140hp) or power and 250Nm (184ft-lb) of torque peaking at a very low 1,500rpm and running to 3,000. Despite being 20 or so kilowatts short of most competitors, the engine's broad power band and the car's light weight make it a good performer when compared to other mid-sizers (nearly 1 sec faster to 100kph that a 4-pot Camry).

While a 7 speed "DSG" dual-clutch auto is available, we opted for the 6 speed manual. Claimed fuel efficiency is slightly lower than with the DSG, but I have still managed to get it as low as 5.0L/100Km (47mpg US) in city driving. Overall average so far is 7.2 (32.7mpg US) and dropping. Bear in mind this is entirely city driving with A/C and the engine isn't broken-in yet. This number should improve as Kms build.

The car is well equipped, with 9 airbags, a panoramic sunroof, touchscreen infotainment, lots of safety acronyms, 17" alloys, advanced alarm, auto opening tailgate, cooled glovebox, hill-start assist, reversing sensors, height adjustable headlights etc. The only significant omission is a reversing camera, that is now standard on cars built one week after ours.

The car rides well, but sharp bumps can upset the torsion-beam rear end (up-spec models get a smoother independent rear end) and the cavernous tail tends to amplify impact noise, but it is nowhere near uncomfortable and the handling benefits from a slightly stiffer suspension than most competitors.

Speaking of a cavernous tail, cargo space is massive for a mid-size (588l or 1718 with seats down). About the only way to get more room for your luggage is with a large wagon or SUV that will set you back an easy $10 grand more and burn twice the fuel. Rear seat space is ample for adults (I can comfortably "sit-behind-myself"), but the third seat can be tight as the car is on the narrow side. Front seats are comfortable with decent adjustability, but I find the cloth pattern doesn't look as premium as the rest of the interior.

Dash and other interior parts are well put together, with soft-touch plastics, pleasant textures, and subtle accents that should guarantee the interior design won't date easily. If you want a dated interior, see a Ford.

Exterior design is conservative, and features a functional elegance missing in many over-detailed cars. Proportions are good, detailing is limited, and a low belt-line allows large windows with excellent visibility all around.

Criticisms? I find the leather steering wheel rim to be a little thick for my taste, but is otherwise excellent. The turn signal stalk is (like most European cars) mounted on the left, meaning I can't indicate and change gears at the same time. The cruise control works well, but the controls are mounted on the turn signal stalk, which brings back awful memories of 1990s GM cars. The front cupholders are a bit too small, the seats don't fold completely flat, and Adelaide would like a 12-volt socket for the back seat.

All this for about $26,000 before on-roads (or about $6k less than a base Mazda6 wagon). In addition, we got a free upgrade to a 5-year/unlimited km warranty (from 3-year/unlimited).

Yes Skoda ftw. Most people on the forum are from the states and have never heard of Skoda. I drove my uncles Skoda in Greece. They are under powered but generally just a nice driving car.

The moon roof is really awesome. Great choice especially for the price.

Great color, nicely equipped and a very clean look over all, especially the driver instrumentation.

They are unpopular here, too. Though we do have a little more to choose from. I read that Skoda expects more than half of all Octavias to be wagons. This marks my sixth wagon. I just read an article in Wheels that predicts SUV sales will exceed car sales in Australia next year... sigh...

In regards to Skodas and underpowered, I can see that. In most markets, the car is available with a 1.2 turbo good for just over 100hp. It's an excellent engine, but not quite enough to move even a light mid-sizer. However, I have found the 1.4 to be plenty grunty. I was able to climb a 6 mile long 8% grade at 60mph in sixth gear with 4 people and hardly needed to use the throttle. As long as you keep it above 1500rpm it feels like a small V6, below 1500 its sips like a tiny 4-cylinder.

I'm glad you went with the white.

And the thing with Skoda is that people who buy those aren't typically going for major power. They're going for the best bargain for something solid. In that vein, I say well done, sir.

Interesting about the differences in the rear suspension depending the model level.
