View Full Version : Allie the Alltrac

Instead of having my build in the Intro section I figured I should build a proper project thread.
This 1st post is crazy long as I wanted a quick history on my life with celica's.
I've been part of the celica world now for almost 15 years now. A 91gts was my first car and 1st love for that matter and after a number of different projects I decided that this time I'd start from scratch and do it right.

This is my first Celica - picture from about 2004. She was slammed on the ground with an intake and thats about it. I decided to build a halftrac and was almost done when I got a new job that moved me to winnipeg. So like a stupid car guy I pulled the freshly built engine, bought a truck and drove halfway across the country. A fresh 3sgte but no car to put it in.

You can see the engine taking up half the bed of the truck. I miss that truck btw.

About 2-3 years later I stumbled up upon Allie. She was sitting at a shop that I drove by everyday until one morning I saw a for sale sign. I quickly did a U turn got the number and within 12 hours of it being for sale I owned it. It was relatively stock. Though did come with a 3 inch turbo back exhaust and a TWM short shifter. At the time I think I paid $1800.
Here are a few pic's shortly after purchase.

She is/was a good car but did burn oil, needed new brake lines and though from far she looked great her floors were well.... hurting.
Thankfully I had a spare freshly built motor.

After completing the engine swap I had a great year with it. I ran about 14+ autocross events and she was pretty competitive considering the cars she ran against but like every car guy I wanted more. So the winter came and I decided I might as well put a bigger turbo on, EMS, a side feed intake manifold bigger injectors etc. The car was put back together and I was working out the bugs when I found out I was going to be a father.

Project on Hold. No more money was to be spent. So she took what I thought was going to be a quick nap. My daughter turns 3 in feb 2015.

Shortly after the birth of my daughter an acquaintance of mine got into 2 small accidents with his 94 GT4 and Insurance wrote it off. How could I resist. So to my now wife's dismay another celica was in the garage.

I parted out a bunch of stuff and kept the drivetrain for myself and waited until the time was right to actually start a full build. Which brings me to the actual project.

With my celica rotting away I could see how I was going to save her until I found a guy in Montreal (8 hours away) selling a mint JDM shell. PERFECT. I was dead set on staying LHD but the JDM shell would give me all the panels I'd need to save my car.
A crappy picture but this is both the JDM Car and mine hanging out in the garage before the deconstruction began.

Both Cars were completely stripped of everything! Every part, clip etc was removed.

Off she went for sandblasting and body work.

Now for some primer
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20141119_192112_zps7dgexcrl.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141119_192112_zps7dgexcrl.jpg.html)

The guys that did the body work went all out for me. After sandblasting the entire car was epoxied then all the imperfections were fixed. holes filled, dents fixed etc. Then it was epoxied once again then primer then onto paint. For paint color I chose Lexus LFA Whitest White. the paint code is 079 vs. the stock super white of 040

Now for the "completed car"
Parts stored as nice as I could in the garage and the chassy ready for rebuild

Quick update.
So I have the entire body harness laid out from front to back. Need to secure it in most places but will do that as I actually plug everything in especially the stuff behind the dash. Got to work last night and got the rear bumper and valance mounted. Almost got the tail lights in but have to go to the auto body shop today and buy a few clips.

Sound deadening.

One of the goals for my car is usability. I've got kids that I'll want to be able to drive around with and be able to hear them over the exhaust.

So start with a spayable seam sealer.
We were able to get into rear quarters with some as well.
Every inch of the underside of the car is also covered in this.http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20141217_203930_zpsajxau3oy.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141217_203930_zpsajxau3oy.jpg.html)

Very cool stuff. I hope to one day rebuilt a trac down to the shell.

12-04-2014, 06:37 PM
Like I said in the other thread, great work! You are doing everything right with this build.

12-04-2014, 07:00 PM
Total candidate for "as clean as Princess"

Bout time too. Someone has to keep that crabby old bastard The Captain on his toes!

12-04-2014, 07:04 PM
Thanks guys! Really appreciate it. The next few months are going to a lot tedious work putting everything back together. I've got a few fun little add on's to the car that I'm excited to show that really only celica guys can appreciate. Basically some bonus things you can build when you have a few cars to pull from.
As for Princess she really is inspiration. captain has done a great job of keeping true to car. I plan on doing much of the same though when I do finally get to the engine it won't look stock like his. Lots more pic's to come on the rebuild

12-16-2014, 03:58 PM
So a big but boring night in the garage yesterday. My rear subframe, sway bars and hub's got back from sand blasting and did the 1st coat of POR15 on everything.
Also stage 1 of sound deadening happens on Wednesday. My body guy is coming by and we are going to seamseal the floor as well as in the rear quarter's behind the speakers

12-16-2014, 09:15 PM
Looking good!

Be careful when you use the seam sealer. Don't cover up any plugs or water channels. :)

POR15 is great stuff right!?

12-16-2014, 11:57 PM
POR15 is amazing stuff! I've painted pretty well everything that goes under the car with it and looks great and is basically chip proof. Cost way more than regular paint but we'll worth it.

12-17-2014, 07:36 AM
That stuff will easily last another 20 years. It is definitely worth the extra money and it looks like you are putting it to great use. This car is going to be fantastic when you finish it. Very excited for you!

12-17-2014, 09:11 AM
So... I'm not an alltrac fanboy but... *fap*

01-07-2015, 04:00 AM
It's been slow progress over the past few weeks. I thought I was gonna have all this spare time but it just wasn't there. Oh well I suppose..
I have gotten a few things done. Brake and clutch pedals are on and I finally got my clips for the wiring harness and got the trunk clipped in.
Also got the interior sound deadening started. We sprayed the entire car with seam sealer and next I'm going to use the Ensolite package from Raamaudio.com.
Here's a crappie pic of the interior. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20141217_203930_zpsajxau3oy.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141217_203930_zpsajxau3oy.jpg.html)

01-07-2015, 06:14 AM
You want to use the BXTII first, then the Ensolite over top. Ensolite by itself will only add a material barrier for rattles and filter out very high frequencies.
It needs to be used with the BXTII in order to provide the desired result. :)

Definitely looking good so far though!

01-07-2015, 11:50 AM
I have the BXTII as well :)

01-09-2015, 07:30 PM
Great work so far. One day I hope to go this deep on a trac.

01-10-2015, 05:59 AM
your car is absolutely fantastic, I wish mine was half as far a long as yours.

03-07-2015, 12:13 PM
So it's been quite a long time since my last update. I've had next to zero time to work on it but recently got the last of the under dash completed with all pedals and steering column in. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20150301_215121_zps4fkfhtac.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150301_215121_zps4fkfhtac.jpg.html)

and my hatch finally came back from the body shop. The hatch was way behind the rest of the car as the guys doing my paintwork had to find someone willing to pull out the glass and make me a custom moulding so they could fill in the windshield squirter. The results are great though.
http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20150306_202420_zpsoi8uwks7.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150306_202420_zpsoi8uwks7.jpg.html)

03-07-2015, 05:49 PM
Very clean!

03-15-2015, 10:45 PM
Dashboard is in!! I even got the cluster and my gauges in as well.
The gauges go in early because they are tied into the engine harness and I don't really want to have to take everything apart again later if I can. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20150314_162249_zps1luxslfq.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150314_162249_zps1luxslfq.jpg.html)

I also found time to work on my mirrors. I swapped the glass out of a set I bought from Germany into my Japanese ones so that now I have power folding LHD mirrors :)
I now have for sale a set of manual fold "jdm" mirrors for sale if anyone is interested

03-16-2015, 04:36 AM
If you order the replacemtn glass for them online you can get them power and heater. (you link it to the rear window defrost and it then cancels automagically ;) )

03-16-2015, 11:02 AM
That probably would have saved me money. Lol
the mirrors came from germany and have the defrost in the m. I guess i need to decide if I want to run even more wires. building the harness for the power folding is a PITA

03-27-2015, 01:49 PM
So this post is probably quite boring to everyone else but this weekend I will be able to install my rear seats!! http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/b569/mikelock2/Mobile%20Uploads/20150327_085936_zpsp45n48bv.jpg (http://s1292.photobucket.com/user/mikelock2/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150327_085936_zpsp45n48bv.jpg.html)
All of the main interior panels are now installed. Next up will putting the doors back together so that I can finish putting everything under the dash and complete the wiring for the mirrors. It's really starting to look like a car again!

03-27-2015, 03:39 PM
Definitely looking good!

03-28-2015, 01:43 PM
So the bulk of the interior went in last night. The seats and console aren't actually bolted in as I still have to adjust the ebrake cable once installed as well as finish wiring in the mirror once the doors are put back on. Next on the list is finishing the underneath of the car and suspension. It's looking more and more like a car every day.

03-28-2015, 04:23 PM
Looking great!

03-28-2015, 11:35 PM
"I love it when a plan comes together." :)

I am sure you are excited at this point, I would be. Can't wait for you to be done!

03-28-2015, 11:41 PM
The interior was a big step! In the coming weeks I may actually be able to put some real thought into the engine and eventually seeing the car moves under its own power again

03-29-2015, 12:18 AM
Did you treat the door cards like I recommended? It makes a big difference.

03-29-2015, 12:20 AM
I actually ran out of sound deadening. I have to order more. I should have ordered the bigger package. I haven't touched the doors as of yet. Left them off so they wouldn't be in the way

03-29-2015, 12:21 AM
Good call. :)

09-16-2015, 04:33 AM
As usual I haven't updated this in a while. I haven't made much progress on the car in MONTHS. Its been a crazy summer and I'm looking forward to the fall and winter when I've got more free time at home to work on it. I haven't forgetten about her though. Today I picked up this beauty.
Strange car. Its a GTS but with no options. roll up windows and all but does have AC.
The car has an RC engine in it and runs pretty darn good. The brakes were super sketchy do I wasn't really able to push it.
I'm quite pleased with the car basically rust free and the swap is really clean! I'll get some better pictures in the day light.

^ The damn car that Blackhawk never became. What was the sticker price if you don't mind me asking?

09-16-2015, 02:17 PM
It was an unbelievable score.

01-12-2016, 02:19 PM
As usual its been a while since I last updated this post. The frequency of the posts is reflective of the amount of time I can find to work on the old girl.
I have picked away at a few things. I have the doors assembled but wont put them on the car until the build is basically done. One less thing to worry about scratching.
I also got the gas tank and rear subframe installed. I had luke (klue) modify my sending unit to allow for bigger lines and had to massage the trunk a fair bit to install but she is now in.
I also made my decision when it comes to powertrain. I picked this up on the weekend. I am going to send the harness to Doug at wiregap shortly to get built and do the tune up while the harness is gone. I'm hoping that by having the engine here it will light a bit of a fire under my ass to keep this project rolling. Other than time there is very little that will stop me from driving the car this summer.

As of late I've been making a bit of progress on the old girl. I've done a lot of shopping lately and have accumulated most of the big-ticket items needed to finish off the build. Currently, the 215 motor has been stripped down and I've sent the valve cover and intake manifold out for paint and should get them back tonight.
I've got the harness back from wiregap along with the new downpipe in the picture. I also found a set of wilwood front brake set up that is currently being shipped from the UK which I am really stoked about.
Hopefully, next week I'll get around to doing all the maintenance item on the engine and get the transmission sent out for paint so I can re-assemble everything and get ready for installation. At the rate things are going there is actually a chance I will drive it before the snow falls though I'm not holding my breath as with a build of this size I'm sure all of the little things will take longer than expected.

How did I miss this build thread!??! Awesome work man!

its pretty easy to miss as I don't update or actually work on the car nearly as often as I should.
However my wife is going to Toronto for the WHOLE DAY on Saturday with both kids so I know exactly where I will be :)
hopefully have a nice update for everyone next week

So this isn't related to my build but a friend of mine just sent me a bunch of old pictures of the car from AutoX events. These would be probably 5 or 6 years old. Basically, the last full season the car was on the road. Brought a tear to my eye and hopefully lit a small fire under my ass to start working on it.
The green OEM wheels were for track use only and I thought at the time it made the pictures look awesome.

Stay strong! The dream is still alive!! What's next to do on the build? Running a fmic on the 215?

The next step for me in the build is to get the engine sitting inside the engine bay. There is tons of work left to do but I've hit a point where I need to get the engine and tranny off the ground and make room in the garage. My goal is to have the engine running before the snow flies so that come winter I'm taking care of all the odds and ends to get it driving spring of next year.
I just need to get motivated and back to spending quality time out there.

Totally understand. Start with something that's achievable, some small thing like making some space to do the work. Or fitting it to the crane. Something like that. Just start, once you do things will start rolling! Starting always the hardest part.

I've actually gotten some work done the last week or so.
Got the plastic rockers installed and then did the tune up to the Gen4. Last night I got the wiring harness run on the engine and got most of the plugs on. Just need to get the throttle body back on then start getting ready to get the transmission installed!

nice ! hopefully before you know it you'll have it up and running :)

Once the engine gets installed I'm sure progress will happen fast. I feel like I'm on track for it to be done for the 2017 season which is exciting!

Hang in there and keep soldiering on.

I can sympathize. I'm trying to get some patch panels finished up on mine but it's slow going and depressing at times. It will come though.
