Hi guys,
I have been lurking on CelicaTech for a while but today is the first time I have something interesting to share :amuse:

So, last winter I designed a (electronic device + free Android application) combo that allows to data log on OBD1 Toyota engines.
It uses a Bluetooth connection to connect the phone and the device
there is now 18 engine variants that are proven to work, and the list still grows.
Since then I have been doing intensive testing locally with as much engine candidates as possible and started selling the OBD1READ device worldwide last June.

I sell them through mail and Paypal. if any of you would want one or more, just PM me

what you can do with the application?
- record about 13 engine parameters into a database on the phone.
this allows export/import, custom data analysis in MS Excel.
- get instantaneous MPG
- thermal alarm when coolant temp exceed 110C/230F
- graphic display through time or classical text display
- ECU sensor troubleshooting past the scope of error codes
- a trip computer is in the beta build now (distance, fuel used, time spent)
- exporting data to CarTester8000 PC app is in beta now and will be part f next official release

there is no IPhone port yet, and it is not an open source project.

all details concerning it's installation and use can be found on my blog.

Application is available through Google Play here

Will it show the ignition timing too?

Im going to allow this, however you need pricing on the device in here. Not a "pm me" sort of thing.

Prices must be declared and followed.

I can also do group buys sent to one address.

here are some figures in CAD$ for 1 device shipped to the following country

USA and Porto Rico 46.43 CAD$
Within Canada about 49 CAD$
UK 48 CAD$
Russia 49.83 CAD$
Australia 48.94 CAD$
Finland 47.77 CAD$

So is this device using Bluetooth to communicate with the phone? And would you leave it connected and mount it near the Diag box so it communicates all the time, sending data to the phone while driving?

Hi,
Yes it uses bluetooth to communicate with the Android Phone, sorry for not clearly saying so. I spent too much time working on this aha

I designed it to be portable , someone can keep his device in his pocket and install it on some car when necessary, taking it out after a logging session.
On my car I leave it connected on the diag box all the time,
If you want to leave it there all the time , take the time to think of a way to secure it or solder the wires end into the wiring.
for a permanent install extending the wires into the cabin can make for a much better BT signal with the phone.

I use the app to connect to it when I need to.
You cannot receive data if the ECU is not powered,
You will receive data if the Ignition Key is at ON, whether engine runs or not.
You will receive data if the engine runs.
You will receive data if the car moves ,while driving.

here is an 'anonymous' extremely poor quality video showing the graphic display mode while driving under heavy engine loads , MT 3VZ-FE, fast forward near the end if you want to see the best of it ;)

there are no gauges in the application due to the high latency of the obd1 protocol. it may be a new feature if too many people ask for it..

Received mine yesterday. Ill post my thoughts on it when I get it set up and working (gotta get my car finished set up and working)

This is cool man. Glad someone is still coming up with stuff for the OBD1(ish) Toyotas.

very cool. Work with 1993 JDM aristo ecu?

Andy, what engine exactly? Jdm 1jz-gte and jdm 2jz-gte are allready proven. The 2jz-ge is not yet but highly possible.
Thanks

jdm 2jzgte. So ,sweet.

Welp, time for my noobish question...

What years exactly did celicas come with OBDI? In my searching I found OBDII started in 96, but I can't find a year for the beginning of OBDI.

Hi Hiko.
OBD1 is a really general term, it means more than having a data stream to read.

I understand that in that discussion we only care about when that data stream is available.
for the American continent I would say it begins with the T18 chassis and ends with the T20 chassis.

on the T18 it started in 1992
the 5S-FE and the 3S-GTE was supported at that time.
I have no clue about the 1992-1993 ST with a 4A-FE, although the 1993 Corolla 4A-FE is test proven, both USDM and JDM variants.
so it may have been there for 1992 on the celica but not on the AE92. if someone can confirm about the celica ST with a wiring diagram showing presence of VF1,TE2 pins on the ECU that would clear the case.

on the T20
the 5S-FE is test proven , this will only apply to non obd2 cars of course
I have not been able to prove the compatibility of the OBD1 7A-FE on the AT20? but it is proven to work on the 1993 Corolla 7A-FE so it is likely it does work. same thing as the AT18? celica, a wiring diagram will prove or disprove support.

So will this work with an 88 alltrac?

zf_162_gt

Hi bloodMoney.
It cannot work on the ST165 unless you are using a 1992+ ecu.

Blast.

We are still running an 88 ECU. Oh well.

Thanks for the confirmation!
