Will start an official thread, into this. wont go into detail. Will keep it mostly informative, because i know this will not be a favorite swap for most, and could be cost prohibitive for some.

Decided to share this on Celica tech, because after seeing the bay of the 91 GTS in my driveway, it may be doable...

Approximate cost of swap is around 7 to 8K, and will vary according of how far you want to go. mods and stuff

not going to get into detail about, a shopping list, or what not. there are multiple places you can get it, and it has been discussed before.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1196_zpsec7db8bb.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1196_zpsec7db8bb.jpg.html)

the engine fits, and it barely makes it. will not fully disclose all that is being done, but will mos likely help anyone that wants to do this personally.

fitting the engine and mating the engine, can be found in the MR2OC forums, and i will not take credit for it.

Please lets not fill this thread with garbage. Its a 2grfe, because i wanted it, and if you dont like it, oh well, you are not paying for it, lol....

first things first, the engine needs to come from the bottom, it wont come from the top... it wont...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1202_zpsbb881d33.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1202_zpsbb881d33.jpg.html)

there are some body modifications, and will get into details later in the swap... I have my reasons.

the swap is doable. and like I said, im willing to help personally to any member, that will do it.

Will be a slow guide, because i decided to do it all myself, with no help. I feel like this is more personal....

Will include more stuff in the days to come...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1122_zps5f8875fb.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1122_zps5f8875fb.jpg.html)

just consider the 2grfe, its worth it. all aluminum...

I will update more in the next couple of days, as i have more stuff to post, figure i start with this, and see interest...

The reason it has to go from the bottom, is because youll jam it, when you try to do from the top.

It wont clear the regular hood, but it will clear a gt4 hood, with some modifications to be confirmed...

there is some tapping and drilling to be done to tranny, and engine.... (all is covered in MR2OC), and all credit goes to guoky...

and how the pros do it to mount their engines..

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1183_zps68aa3410.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1183_zps68aa3410.jpg.html)

you just cant go straight to make the engine mount. you need to have a temporary mount to give you an idea of what needs to be cut and addressed.. in the engine bay. i suggest like i said earlier to remove the power steering an lines, and the a/c lines, unless you want to run the risk of damage...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1290_zpsd1a989c2.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1290_zpsd1a989c2.jpg.html)

not yet sure if there is enough space for guoky headers in the rear, they fit for the front..

more stuff,

anyways... here is why you shove this engine from the bottoms...

this is the engine mounted, and on the temp mount...

but that is not a problem..

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1302_zps1d67105b.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1302_zps1d67105b.jpg.html)

obligatory swap picture...

and finished..

i had to pull this engine 6 times up and down, up down to measure the cutting and notching the frame...

i had to notch for the head, and steering pump....

this is another angle from the crossmember.. you barely have clearance..

a stupid trick to line up the engine i learned...

and once again, out, awaiting flywheel, and i will clean the transmission. its dirty...

still lots to do, and so little time...

Impressive, and you tried being all humble on the phone with me.

I could be way off base here, but I am pretty sure that the 4th-6th Gens are all the same car with minor differences, aside from the major difference of the body of course. I know that many suspension components have been made to work across all three generations. Engine mounts are different, but I am pretty sure that bay sizes are the same.

That looks like it will be a pretty wicked swap when it is done, just a brief look at the engine specs and it makes the same power and torque as my Mustang V6, not bad at all.

One thing you will discover as you spend time with us, we are all pretty open minded and groovy with all the stuff, there isn't a lot of hate over here on what or how you modify your car. We might seem a little cliquey, but that is because a lot of us have been together for ten to fifteen years.

Anyways, I know I am glad to have you here and I look forward to seeing this swap done.

What Murg said. ;)

Also welcome! That is a prodigious amount of work. Very glad that you have decided to document it. Perhaps if you are willing, adding in all the details would be welcomed by all.

Can't wait to see it all finished. Keep up the good work.

I have to admit that I just spent the last hour stalking you on 6GC and Classic-Celica.

I am highly impressed with your work and you seem to be extremely knowledgeable.

I am really looking forward to meeting you next week.

thanks, but all in all, i learn in the forums. That celica in the back, is on stand by. pending the 6th gen. When i started i did not how to even change brake pads in 2007. but reading and trial and error, makes it happen. I am not a mechanic by trade. Just another enthusiast. I dont know what im doing, and when i hit a bump, i go back and scrounge the internet. As of right now, i have no idea of the wiring. But the time will come...

Um...

Can I say...

"Holy hell, that's ballsy". Lol I hadn't ever really considered that a 3.5l V6 into a 6th gen was even possible. I doubt I would DO it for precisely the reason you mentioned... But good lord that's awesome!

Now I have to one-up you by putting that same engine into a 7th gen...

Just kidding. But nice work, and I can't wait to see the rest of this swap.

Very cool! I had seen the 2GR going into MR2's and MRS's but this is the first 6th gen. This will be a righteous ride.

thanks, i wish more people see this engine as a good turning point. with more people interested, there will be more support for it. As of now only one person makes headers. And its ok, the rest is just grab here and there. Everything just ads up. not that the market needs to be flooded with crappy stuff, but more options.
I have some more stuff to post, but work limits me. and its just some non important crap...

And for the record, Norberto here agrees with me as to the feasibility of a backhalved/tube chassis/chopped and channeled RWD conversion of a FWD Celica.

Just something I have been saying for well over a decade is possible.

At least I think that was him that posted about it.

I think this is going to be awesome when it is complete, the OP is pretty knowledgeable and his workmanship is pretty nifty. He isn't telling us about the 1GC he has hidden in the corner that he has all ready for reassembly when this project is done.

I am hoping that with his writeup of this, and maybe the other member that is thinking about doing this (who already has the engine) will make this a more common swap. This is pretty wicked, if expensive. I think an STXX5 would be awesome with this engine.

Fidanza Flywheel, for 1MZ . The tranny does look funny. but it does the job. I would have loved AWD, but that will be to way out of my league....

and a major update..

just because i was there... SS clutch line...

Just kidding, here is the major update.

Credit goes to forgman on 6GC, he sent me the parts needed, I had just to buy one that was bad, and just need to tweak the bracket... But Im using OEM Mount...

Thanks for the info about the flywheel. I didn't realize the MZ unit would bolt up.

As for putting this in a STXX5, there's a guy, I believe it was at AT.net maybe here though, that was putting a VZ into an All Trac. He was using a Rav 4 transaxle if I remember correctly. It took some grinding of the transaxle or transfer case, I for get which. The GR is a bigger engine than the VZ but it would probably go into an STXX5. That would be pretty cool. Have the same or better power as the 3S and more torque.

pretty sure similar can be built for any celica...

It is a bracket and its finalized.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/04B2251A-AE57-45B7-A8C2-5DF026C0F22A_zpsjaoho1gh.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/04B2251A-AE57-45B7-A8C2-5DF026C0F22A_zpsjaoho1gh.jpg.html)

its not pretty, but does the job, as for measures there are none, it was made trial an error.

this bracket allows the oem mount of the 2GR to mount in the Celica, using the stock GT holes.

this took 7 hours to build.....

So sweet. You thinking that it'll be running before the first snowfall?

Nice job.

You could easily have been able to replicate the bracket you made with one well place phone call to Chris. Let that fucker go at it with a micrometer, tape measure and a protractor then put it all into CAD. Then, BAM! Laser cut pro welded pieces are able to be replicated :)
Make him put that fancy degree to work. :)

Love you Chris!

i dont know, if it will, still some things to sort out.. wiring will be a nightmare.. taking my time for the moment.. then also im rebuilding the suspension as i go too...

Looking good! The work is impressive. Wiring will probably be fun but it can be done. This will be sweet when it's finished.

I can turn any of those into shop drawings in cad. Just need a sketch and dims

since there is no throttle cable in the engine, i had to...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/B483D95E-D5D9-463C-80C5-0308A4970548_zpsfheuwcql.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/B483D95E-D5D9-463C-80C5-0308A4970548_zpsfheuwcql.jpg.html)

i will be using this...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/Items_For_Sale/DSCN1373_zps82b07a7e.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/Items_For_Sale/DSCN1373_zps82b07a7e.jpg.html)

of course i had to whip out metal, to make custom parts...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/8735961A-1F41-413B-91D8-532BB0D16724_zpsbucuqwug.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/8735961A-1F41-413B-91D8-532BB0D16724_zpsbucuqwug.jpg.html)

the bracket itself took 7 hours, give or take 2. because i had no idea of the positioning of the pedal, so it was trial and error. now that i have a basic idea, should be quicker.

This swap is slow, because im collecting parts as i go. If i break one barrier, i move on to the next. remember, i had no idea the engine would fit in the bay, it would have been a 2700$ loss for me... ( there are cheaper, but not with less than 25K miles and complete with all accessories).

this is the bracket on the car...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1377_zps3f941810.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1377_zps3f941810.jpg.html)

of course had to make sure that

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1376_zps872dec55.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1376_zps872dec55.jpg.html)

i used long bolts, and thread locker... Do not want to get loose on me.. Same went for the pedal...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1378_zps23c0280e.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/Interior_Upgrades/DSCN1378_zps23c0280e.jpg.html)

and next task, will be to find out if these go in with no problem...

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh102/njccmd2002/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1379_zps192c46e1.jpg (http://s254.photobucket.com/user/njccmd2002/media/6th_Generation_Celica/97_Limited_Edition/2grfe_Swap/DSCN1379_zps192c46e1.jpg.html)

not worth the investment. there is no any enthusiasm of other 6th geners for this swap, maybe just one... and thats it...

I think it is an awesome swap, and if I wasn't in the habit of cobbling things, I would love to try it.

But I have a feeling that something like this deserves better than nails for cotter pins, electrical tape wire splices, self taping screws and JB Weld everywhere... Not that I do those things, but just, I am not amazed when I run across them.

Nitro_Alltrac

This is a great swap that I'm going to follow with a lot of interest to completion. It makes me interested in picking a 6 gen and doing this swap. While more expensive that a 3S swap, this is the way to go for the power and especially the torque. A stock 3S swap, even a 4gen, isn't going to put down the power and torque that a 2GR will out of the box. With some tweaking, it should go over 300 without a lot of trouble. Keep up the good work.

Have you considered using a remote oil filter relocation kit so that you can actually do an oil change? There doesn't seem to be any clearance under those lines above the oil filter.

'Berto I was thinking about this the other day, have you considered using a smaller alum radiator on some custom mounts and moving both the Rad and AC condenser forward in vehicle?

Also, that goofy fucker Mario is right... I'm dying to get that passenger side mount into CAD to see if it can't be machined from billet aluminum..... How sweet would that be?

One more thing, can you take a better pic of the upper mount that you made and welded to the OEM mount? I have another little idea kicking around in my head...

Kick around the idea of adapting hydraulic mounts from something like say a Honda. Those things were made by Witches. They work that well. Seriously.

not yet. im also rebuilding the car as i go. too much t be done by just one person.

so far engine is ready, mount is ready.

engine wise

ok so to give an update. and for the records.

im going to have to make a hybrid harness from the original highlander, which has 5 plug ecu, with the harness of the 2 plug ecu. I have the smaller plug, and may have to order the bigger plug..

Worst part about wiring a car, is that you need to get the harnes for the ecu your going to use, lol changing from highlander to rav is not fun.....

ok so i have mapped every wire in the harness, it really has been pain in the rear really.... as its been 2 full days. comparing the highlander and rav4 diagrams

and the engine is like all gutted, lol....

If you know how to read a map, you know how to read wiring diagram.

Its easy, the books are self explanatory. I was afraid all the time, because i never tought I could. Sure you can pay 500 to have someone do it.

The 3sgte harness is a cookie compared to this monster. LOL But then when it comes troubleshooting time, if you dont know, then you are screwed.

There is no halfassing it, i know where every solder goes, Im planning on adding a new fuse box, to accomodate new relays.

Minor changes to the body wiring of the celica, but i would not be able to accomodate for all that if i have someone else do it...

My car, Gojira has been dead for 2 years... The first 2grfe swap on a st204 celica, (crossing fingers) i have to sort few details. Battery light is on, the SRS is on (i know why) the Engine check, will forever be on lol!!

this was a homebuilder experience. Rough path. but its doable. Wont fill details of swap here. it can be read over here...

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=93458

a road that took too long, since at the beginning of the year i herniated a disc, and had surgery....

start up video... excuse the wiring mess, i had some last minute screw ups, lol

For the tach. I used the beams tach. and i know i have a high idle at this time.

Special thanks goes to Gouky from mr2oc, despite all my noob questions, he was always helpful.

Im proud to say, his headers are in my car.....:thumbup. I dont see why not in a st184!!!
