View Full Version : Differences between 5sfe ecus?

Okay guys heres the story. Bought a 92 celica gt for my little brothers first car. Long story short after going through two distributors (both spec'd out) and replacement of the ignitor with a known good one I found out that the igt signal was out of spec from the ecu as well as no igf signal at the ignite connector. While checking the ecm voltages as per the fsm I found some issues. When removing the ecm I found a burnt section of the board.

So my question is when looking online I find several different ecms listed for the 92 gt. When trying to look through our catalog at work it differs the ecms by build date and transmission along with california or federal emissions. the 11/91 with manual trans and federal emissions is Cardone part number 72-1301... but is on back order.

My question is what ecms are compatible. I have zero issues with repinning any changes that might need to be made. Although from looking though the BGB I cant seem to find any different pinouts. Are all the ecms plug and play for the 5th gen manuals?

92+ should have a knock sensor and there is a difference between the auto and manual ECUs (physically, and electronically different).

Have you traced your IGF signal wire from the ignition unit to the ECU looking for breakage?

Do you have signal at the ignition unit?

i was not aware of the addition of the knock sensor but I would assume that since its the post 11/91 ecm it would be the ecm from with knock sensor. Is the 89661-2B160 ecm the correct one then? The service tag from the ecm was mostly destroyed and is nearly indecipherable. I will check for a knock sensor while im at my garage today. I visually looked for wire chafes, breaks but have not tested further do to finding the burned ecm which clearly needs replaced first. I was getting signal while cranking at the distributor though.

Also what about using the 6th gen ecm? Looks to be a pinout difference but compatability beyond that?

Many of the 6th gen ones may work but the position of the pins change from year to year, if you can switch that you'll be ok. at least th3 94-95 is obd1, but 96+ is obd2 so that would be too different.

I just had a similar problem and was because it was missing a ground strap from the intake manifold to the firewall. It ran like that but eventually smoked the ecu

for that matter I wonder why you cant just go and get one from a camry. The colors the wirelimb uses on the Camry are completely different but as long as you match the right circuit to the right pin idk why it wouldn't work. 'cause you can get Camry ECUs at picknpull for $20 all day long.

For a 1992 Celica GT 11/91 build date with manual trans and federal emissions, the Toyota part number for the ECU is 89661-2B161 (used for vehicle build dates from 11/1991 to 08/1993). Toyota ECU part number 89661-2B160 were made for the same spec vehicle with build dates between 09/1991 to 10/1991. There are several of these with manual transmissions in a salvage yard by me. I don't know how much the salvage yard gets for ECU's, but they likely would have the correct one (89661-2B161) for your build date 1992 Celica.

Ok the one for my 94 GT with manual and Federal emmisions is 89661-2B670 build date 12/93
from comparing the Toyota manual for the 5sfe that I have for 5th gen I notice that the pins are in different spots, but most of the colors used on wires of specific circuits are the same the pins are just moved around.
now that I think of it most Camry ECU's would be automatic tranny so that wouldn't work right. What I did was find somebody on the forums who's parting out their car or just getting rid of the stock parts after they did a 3sgte swap or something. also my 94 5sfe didn't use a cold-start injector

Update time. What I pulled out of the car was a 2b160 ecm. Which does not coincide with the build date. I have searched everywhere local for a "2b160" or "2b161" and have had zero luck. Anyone have any laying around/ know of any local?

Bottom Line, ECU must match harness.
you can use an ecu from a different year/model, but must make sure you get the harness too

well, if the pins for the circuits are not the same you can just move what position the terminals fit into in the plug. as long as the computer uses the same kind of control system, like you cant use a non-cali for a cali one, or a manual for an auto tranny. and you cant mix ODB1 and ODB2.

best thing for you to do is keep an eye on the Buying/Selling thread. look for people parting out the same car. there are several Celica sites you can watch.

otherwise you gotta go to Toyota and bend over

I have 2 5sfe computers and a harness. I'll get part numbers tomorrow! Both are from 93 manual trans I think.

price for an ecm or ecm/ harness combo? shipped to 17331? This would just be a lot easier than keep searcing the yards in an ever expanding radius.

i can pull a clean harness from the yard tomorrow from a 91 gt manual that I already have a known good ecm for. So correct ecm and harness is the only criteria right? $60 bucks sound right? At this point I just want it fixed and out of my hair.

That should work and the price sounds good.

You are correct, the key is matching ECU and harness.
