I got this thing. It's kinda ok.

Been sitting in dudes garage for several years, was a project he just didn't have time for anymore. Shes not in the best shape, is missing TONS of stuff, but starts up and runs.

This is the fuel I drained from her tank, it was bad. Removed the MBC and FCD he had on it so I can get back to stock and form a baseline for my plan. Not really sure where I'm going with this yet. Options and stuff. We'll see.

Need to redo the IC piping as it hangs low and it pretty much rigged as fuck.

The driver side floor is totally rotten into the subframe and rocker.

Removed carpet today and poked around. The worst is the driver floor pan up into the rocker. Passenger side is actually not bad at all, just a few small spots I could find. I'm going to hold off on cutting the floor out untill later in the fall because work is really busy right now. Plan is to remove and replace what I can, make a nice new subframe, and some sort of roll cage to make sure the chassis is solid. Donno how crazy Im'a go on the cage yet.

Did some more cleaning up, changed up how the battery cable from the rear was connected and mounted the fuse box in a more permanent way. Also removed the starter relay mod, cause it doesn't need it and was trashy.

I'm going to be swapping the turbo next weekend because this one has a lot of shaft play. I have a gen2 CT26 I'm going to put in. I'm also burning oil, not sure if it's the turbo or valve seals, so after the turbo if it's still burning I'll do valve seals with the head on the car, not wanting to pull the head yet. I'll do timing at the same time because I can hear some noise from something in there.
I need to make a new intake pipe cause this is just....not acceptable.

I went to my dealership today and ordered new output shaft seals for the rear diff. I need to order a thing of shore 80 poly and I'll make new diff mounts like I did my 162 motor mounts, unless I find another option. I haven't honestly looked yet. I found out the passenger front ABS sensor and harness are broken, I'd like to fix that but it's not top priority. I think the passenger front wheel hub is warped. There is no play in the bearing and it sounds fine, but when spinning it by hand you can visually see it. I've looked around but haven't found a hub assembly just the bearing. The tilt in it caused the ABS ring to grind into the ABS sensor, that's now I noticed it. Need to replace tie rods, inner and outer. I'll do ball joints too just cause. I'm going to have all the stuff to put power steering back on the car in the next few weeks, so that'll be nice. I'm gonna pull the engine cause it'll be easier to install all that stuff. While it's out I have a 185 tranny that I MAY swap too. Something is wrong with the clutch, seller said it was new but it's not disengaging properly, I had to extend the slave push rod until I'm putting a good bit of pressure on the throwout which is unacceptable. So I'll probably order a clutch kit and have it set with a new flywheel, when I did that on my 162 everything was perfect. New slave too cause they are like $10, why not. I'm done typing now. Oh, compression was at 170 across all cylinders, engine wasn't operating temp while checking cause I got side tracked and it cooled down.

Pulled the front hub apart to see if bearings would fix it or if I was really screwed.

Yeah. So I'ma need new hubs. I have a lead on some used ones if they turn out to be good. Checking with toyota on getting new.
Also found today that timing was set at 0 degree, thats why this thing was so sluggish. Pumped that slut up to 10 and she'll actually rev now. Much happy.

It's pretty bad. I'm not scraping the project though. Once I get it torn down and get a good eye on just how bad I'll go from there. If it's too much, I'll roll cage and custom subframe and just make a beater.

Just more exploration after work tonight. Nothing major to report in on, just needing general replacement parts for worn brakes and steering. I'd like to fix the ABS just cause. I jabbed my pliers thru the floor in several places just to see, the entire floor is pretty much shot.

Also, I'd say four, maybe five points will be sufficient unless you plan to track the car, then go six or seven. Or ask Willie about his cage.

To keep it from folding up from rust you will want a six point minimum. Hoop to both front floorboards, to rear. That won't keep your seat from falling through, but if reinforced, it should keep your car from folding.

That is what Chaos will be getting eventually, but she is nowhere near as bad as above.

But thats a long way off. I'll fix it well enough, but this car is always going to be a dirt road whore. No sense putting an expensive paint job over a body that is falling apart.

Nope. Fuck it. I'm not dumping thousands of dollars into a rotten chassis. Even to get this car driveable, between every bushing being shot and the brake system destroyed, and just all the general maintenance it needs I'll be sinking way to much into a vehicle that isn't gonna last another few years before the rust starts coming through every inch of the paint and an interior thats partially gutted with ripped and ruined seats.
So I'm done. Im'a sit it in the corner of the lot and see what else I can find.
Lesson learned, it's ok to drive 900 miles and come back with an empty trailer.

Talked to Murg and he's convinced me to put this motor in MudHoney. So over the next few months Im'a use this 165 as a glorified engine stand and get this engine totally up to par. I'll pull it when satisfied and take it to NC. This way I can at least get some use out of this purchase. I'll probably aim to do this late November.

Subframe, floorpan in the rear, fuel tank, suspension bits... it's a lot of work for the end result.

I think his current plan is a solid one and more than that, actually doable in a reasonable time frame.

You could always come get my '88 with perfect body and a 185RC drivetrain. Assembly required, but a keeper if you want a 165. ;)

$2,000. is all I am asking to cover what I spent on the engine and transmission set.
It already got a new head gasket and was pre drilled for EGR to meet CA emissions specs (not that it matters to anyone outside Cali :D )
Has a harness conversion by Dr.Tweak as well. Anyhow it's mostly all there and a great project for someone more able bodied than I have become.
So think of it like, "Buy my engine and trans and get a perfect rolling shell for free."
