View Full Version : Coilovers - Help me choose my first set.

I want to buy some coilovers for my Paseo that I use for autocross. I have never bought anything like these before so I don't know the reputation of any of the brands. I don't really want to spend more then $1500, but other then that, I'm open to suggestion.

If there are other brands out there, I'm open to them as well.

These shocks will be the only major modifications other then new wheels and tires and minor exhaust work and intake work (running in STC).

my buddy on his old 240sx a few years ago ran the k sports and he loved em, he also used his car in drift effects. you should find out what murg has on choas and see what he thinks of those.

I've been thinking about picking up a set of the BC racing struts with Swift Springs for my alltrac. Lots of positives reviews.

I believe Murg has Megans, which is also what I have on my st165.

I run Megans. I don't know if they make a set for the Paseo, but if they do, cost and quality-wise it was a no brainer.

+1 for Megan as well, just have to check brake line clearance before installation (rears required enlarging, fronts were fine).

I've heard mixed things about K-sports not having the dampners line up (one side on lowest, being higher than the other side on highest).

Of the brands listed, Kido has some good reviews on BMWs and a few other cars.

You guys are a bunch of lazy cheapasses.

Build your own. Theyll be so much better than Megans it isnt even funny. Not very hard either. And in the end, not a WHOLE lot more expensive.

Just my .02. I would never, under ANY circumstance, EVER, run K-Sports again. I had them for my 2nd MR2 and I had them on for a grand total of about a week and a half. They rode like shit, the sway bar mounts, while cool in theory, sucked ass and kept shifting mid turn causing the swaybar to be all twanged weird. I also had rubbing issues with my wheels(for whatever reason they stuck further out when I had the K-Sports on) that went away once I swapped them out for the TRD coilovers I got. It liked to hop in the corners if I went in balls deep. I don't have anything good to say about those pieces of shit. After my experience with those, I won't touch cheap coilovers anymore.

I'd rather have fun on stock suspension until I had saved up enough for a quality setup then go with a cheap set of coilovers again.

My only problem with my BC's so far is that they were short as fuck. My car sits a bit lower than I would like but I'm worried about raising the rear up any more.

So I have found that coilovers for the Starlet should bolt right on, this adds a couple of additional options.

There are more out there, but you get the idea.

Keep in mind this is purely an Autocross focused car, so ride quality isn't much of a concern.

I kind of hate this, I don't know enough, and what is worse, I don't know what I want. I know if was doing this right I would be able to research all the specs, calculate the spring rate I'm after, select a gas tube and assemble it all.

But that's now going to happen this time. I just hope I can stick it out and not get too frustrated, I absolutely love this 90% of the time...

My boss who's daughter races roundy-round cars (Late Model) also had a builder our in Indy build him a set.
I know it's a completely different sport, but he did good work.

Either way, I might hold off for the season on the shocks, we will see.

if you are autocrossing you need to learn how to read a shock dyno. then buy based on shock dynos. springs are easily changed. shocks in a coilover setup...not so much.
tein, megan, ect...not great for autox. they don't have anywhere near enough rebound.

i might also suggest looking at ground control and making a set for yourself using bilsteins or koni shocks. just my .02, based on a purely autocross based car. if you did both like i do...then perhaps get dyno sheets from ceika (the owner is Cedric). they look the most promising for our platform.

fyi...plan on dropping 1500 to 2500 on decent stuff. if you are on a budget then that changes everything.

just to add to my comments...
my megans are excellent on the street and touge runs. they suck balls autocrossing.
