View Full Version : Debatable purchase, '75 ST

So I found a one-owner, 50k original mile '75 ST and the guy wants $500. Why is it debatable? It's been sitting outside for the past 2 years and has developed significant body issues and it's getting close to terminal if it isn't already. From what I saw though the interior is all intact, all the trim is there and the glass is all in great shape, almost everything is good except the body. The worst of it is the hood and right where the vinyl top meets the rear quarter on the passenger side and both are rotted clear through; maybe 1-2 quarter inch holes at the vinyl and the hood is completely trashed, even the bracing is eaten through.

Honestly I'm thinking of offering $350 and just parting out everything good and junking the body but I don't know if it's worth doing. Granted if I get it apart and it's repairable I'd restore it but I'm being realistic and saying it's a loss until proven wrong. I'm just wondering if there's enough value in the parts and potential scrap to make the initial purchase worth it.

What do y'all think?

For $350-$500 it is worth tearing into to see if it is worth saving. And if not, part it out. I promise there is more than $500 worth of stuff there.

The side of my house is already full of Celicas, but I'd probably jump on it.

like murg said, there is more then 500 in parts in that car, the inside of it looks pretty good just from looking at the pics. the rust under the hood on the fender support is what would worry me. and someone correct me if im wrong but isnt the later model 1st gens the more rare of that body style?

I guess I'll lean toward picking it up once I get some extra cash, and if it falls outside of my abilities to fix it and someone else wants to take a shot I'll send it thier way. The way I see it a hood, trunk, door whatever is easy to replace or repair but the body itself is what's got me worried. I have no idea how far inside the rust has spread.

yeah, I would offer $450 and do $500 if he doesn't budge.

The 75 is an oddball because its a change over year and something of a hybrid.. Its worth it as a partout vehicle. 1GC parts go for quite a bit especially in near mint condition. The oddball nature is that the 75 is the early model frame design but with a 20R motor. That makes the front crossmember a "holy grail" item. Too bad the hood isnt savable because they can also be put on the earlier cars to give them a bulge that allows the mouting of a 20/22 in the early bodies.

Id buy it and part it out.

This guy knows ^. the 75 has a bunch of hard to find parts due to its one year only combination. You finding another hood for you to put on if you keep it will be difficult. Either way you go its a ton of work. Expect holes in the floorboard and rockers and spare tire area and rear quarters and etc.

Hell I'd buy it just to say I have a 50k mile one owner 75.

I seriously doubt its actually 50k, the odo on the old celicas only reads to 99999. I bet it has turned over at least once by now.
