View Full Version : Cold start, no high idle

So my 90 GT (5SFE) has been off the road for the evil winter months, and I'm working to get it ready for the road--assuming this horrid winter ever ends.

All winter long, I've been starting it once a week to keep everything limber and to ensure there's a little lubrication in the top end. Yesterday when I started it up, the RPMs shot up to 2,000 as usual but then came back down to about 1100 pretty quickly (within two seconds). All of the Celicas I've owned have maintained a 2,000RPM cold start idle for at least 30 or 45 seconds in winter months, so this is a new problem for me.

Would this be a function of the intake water temp sensor? I have an emissions test coming up so I want to make sure the old beast is running properly...

Could be a coolant temp sensor, the Idle Air Control Valve itself, or possibly even a vacuum leak.

Yeah, I was thinking water temp sensor...thanks for the other suggestions, I'll have to give it a once-over before I pull it for a transmission swap next month.
