Has anyone come up with a good fix for the pesky black filler plate that always breaks and leave a gaping hole at the base of the shifter lever?

Yes, convert it to 5 speed.

Nice... but a useless comment.

Sorry, I was in a silly mood yesterday. I'm not sure what the break is like but if you still have the piece that breaks off you could try plastic welding it, then sanding/painting and maybe reinforce it from behind so it doesn't break again?

Well, if you do convert to a 5speed you won't have to worry about it breaking again....

Do you see how ignorant your replies are. Why stop at a five-speed why not just drop the drivetrain from a late model Camaro in it and make it a rear wheel drive car, why not just sell it and buy a new one. Geez, I'll figured someone might actually have a useful answer here but I can see that's not happening....

Well I'm not too sure what you were expecting, it's a broken piece of plastic so your options are generally to repair it or replace it.

Something like this perhaps, which addresses the issue directly and provides a solution:

I threw all those parts away when I swapped over to a five speed. Otherwise I would ship you my shifter assembly and you could gut it.

Replacing it with a new one? Hardly a complex solution.
