Its been awhile since I've played the Celica game but I'm back with a vengeance.

Here she is. She's not pretty but she came with a slew of parts and work already done to it.

Mmm rusty wheel well. Thankfully after cleaning it up its just surface rust.

The car came with a 2nd Gen 3SGTE with full ECU and harness. Came with a load of parts including piping, intercooler, etc. Downpipe is crushed from a front impact.

Got the trans off and discovered a new pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel. Can't get the damn flywheel bolts off even with impacts. Going to use a little heat to melt the locktite here.

Here is the engine in the car. Turns over just fine but its been sitting for awhile. Freeze plug in the front of the block is gone, I bet water got inside and froze. After the swap this might be good for a rebuild along with the second head and block in the hatch.

I don't believe so. The guy who used to own the car used to strip and race these alltracs in Bellingham. When the body looked abused enough, he'd replace the panels and keep going.

Took a few hours today with a buddy to strip down the motor. Didn't get as far as I'd like but here are a few shots from today.

The shift cable retainers and that axle just look strange to me. I don't think that's an e153 transmission out of a MR2 but rather the transmission off a 5sfe motor.

What happens when you put it in gear and rotate the axle? Does the other side turn the same way or opposite?

I haven't tested but I'm pretty sure its a S54 non-lsd instead of a E153. I wish it had some markings to determine what it was. I'll rotate it tonight to get a better idea.

Also does anyone know if the lower timing belt cover is the same between the celica and mr2?

Not sure what you mean here.

I've been searching for a local shop here to take the E50f transmission from the ST165 to do a general inspection and cleanup. I've emailed several shops with no luck so far. Otherwise hopefully this weekend I'll have the head off to see what is going on.

One of the preferred ways to reinstall the tranny on a 3SGTE is to carefully place the engine on its side, with the timing cover on top of something soft against the ground so that the transmission can be lowered onto the engine vertically. I'm guessing the guy messed something up while attempting this and destroyed the cover.

If you're worried about the covers, hold on to those damaged ones and use them when you do it.

Thats a good idea. I will.

I've been reconsidering my build so far and I think I may go with the ATS short block route instead of having it build locally. At $1800, it is a tempting price. With a total approved (by the SO) budget of $12,000 to complete the car, it sounds like a good plan. Thoughts?

Unless you know and trust someone in your area, I'd go with ATS for their experience in dealing with our engines.

I looked at KO but $4000 for a long block compared to $1800+900 at ats seemed like an easy choice to make. I will however be buying the precision Turbo kit from KO.

Finally pulled off all the accessories and the oil pan. Looks good so far, no pieces of metal anywhere. The dent in the oil pan thankfully didn't damage anything that I can tell however I don't have enough experience to really look at it by eye. Unfortunately I misplaced my socket to remove the head bolts so that'll have to wait until next weekend.

My apartment manager stopped by and watched me do this in utter awe. She laughed and said she definitely wants to see the finished project. Until next weekend...

Upon further examining the cylinder head for my 2nd gen 3SGTE I've seen several gouges along the cylinder head and marks along the cams. I'm not sure if the marks on the cams are normal though.

Not too much progress today but I finally removed the wiring harness from the ol' 1st gen 3SGTE and pulled the brake booster because it was rusting.
