View Full Version : Anyone use a Mishimoto aluminum radiator?

Well I've found my coolant issue. I pressure tested the coolant system today and I've got at least one leak in the radiator. I thinking I've got a few more based on the coolant I found in different places while replacing the downpipe.

The one that's in there now is at least 6 years old. I got it from Radiator Barn and it's all metal. I just recently found out that Radiator Barn got bought out the end of last year. I'm debating as to whether to try to get this one repaired or replace it. All metal radiators for our cars are few and far between.

I'm look at a Mishimoto aluminum radiator made for the All Trac. Has anybody used one of theirs? Any opinions?

I run one in the corolla. It made for a pretty big drop in temps right off the bat.

Thanks guys. From what reviews I found it appeared they were a good product. I'll probably go ahead and order today or tomorrow.

The AutoPwr radiators aren't that bad either. I used one in my ST215 swap.

We sell a ton of Mishimoto radiators through my work and we haven't heard any negative feedback on them really at all.

I ordered one on Monday and they showed that it would be here between March 3-14. It showed up on Wednesday. Fast shipping. I'm hoping to get it put in over the weekend if the weather cooperates.

Thanks for the input everyone. I didn't really want to spend that much, but this should take car of the radiator problems.

I've got to get in mounted. Supposedly, it's a drop in replacement. I guess I'll see. It looks like it will go into the mounts OK but I'm wondering about the fan and fan shroud. I'll post up more one I've got it in the car.

You can safely ditch the stock fan and shroud. Just go with a slimline electric replacement. I used a 10" fan and I have never had any issues, but you would likely want to use either a pair of 10's or a single 12".

I had a pair of 12" slim fans on mine. One a pusher the other a puller. With both running full speed they kept the 215 nice and cool in the az summer while boosting 15psi.

Thanks Mario and Tim. I'm going to check on those. The only negative I've read on the radiator so far is an issue with the stock fan. I've got to look at that and I'm going to check on the slimlines as well.

Question about your installs on the slimline fans. Did you wire them into the factory wiring or did you wire them in independently?

I removed the connections from my stock fans and wired them into there. I didn't want to trip the fuse for the fans (as they pulled near the max each) so I wired the passenger side up like a standard cooling fan. The driver side I wired up with a relay and fed the power from the AC fan. When the cooling fan turned on, the driver fan turned on but drew power from a different source. I think I have it drawn up somewhere....

I run one in the Supra - very happy with it. They even gave me a free replacement when my clutch fan decided to have a hoe-down with the rad core. I run electric fans now.

That's good to know about the warranty.

That's a hell of a radiator Mafix. Maybe overkill but you don't have to worry about overheating with that one.

I ran my 10" slimline electric fan straight off of the factory harness so that I could keep all of the factory safeties. Always worked perfectly.

Cool. That's what I'm planning on doing. I've got one coming that should be here tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it and the radiator installed this weekend. I'm running out of time to check things out before the Dragon.

Got it installed this morning. I have say that when then say direct replacement they mean it. I think it fits better than the one I took out. That one was leaking in a couple of spots, one toward the bottom and that one at the top. The Mishimoto went in great. I could have used the stock fan if I had wanted to. I put in a 12" slimline fan and that gives me more room than before. Overall, I'm happy with it.

One question though, for those of you that have teh Mishimoto radiators, did you use the cap that came with it and how does it fit. This one seems a little loose to me but I guess it's working OK.

So there's room for the stock fan? Are the mounts there too?
I've got an RC fan, and I'd rather keep it than use an aftermarket one if I can help it. For reliability.

I bought mine from an Amazon vendor, rarehonest1 for $268 with free shipping. They were showing it was going to take 7-10 days for arrival but I got it in 2. I was pleased with the transaction. There were a couple of other places that showed it a little cheaper but no free shipping and by the time you added that it, the cost was higher.

This thing has corrected sized threaded mount points on it for everything it looks like. It had the mount spot for the relay box that mounts to the radiator on the right side and it has the mount points on the left side for the fan. The stock bolts fit, no problem. I put them back in so I wouldn't lose them. I didn't get a tape and measure, but eyeballing it, the stock fan and shroud looks to me like it will go back in. As you know, its a tight fit with the stock radiator. It looks like there is at least a couple of inches between the radiator and front of the engine. I can get measurements if you want Jeremy. I didn't think the stock fan would fit so I went ahead and back the slimline fine. I kept the stock fan and put it back if this one doesn't work out.

I have a Mishimoto cap on my ASI rad and it works great, much better than the crummy one ASI gave me. All the people I know that run Mishi rads run their caps without any problems.

How thick is the rad? I doubt the stock fan will fit by the looks of it, the issue I ran into was clearance from the back of the fan motor to the clutch slave IIRC.

a stock Honda rad cap also fits the bill perfectly. It is what I used after the one they sent failed. just take the old (new) one in and they can match it for you at the part counter. :)

I just use a stock Toyota cap - I don't generally like using high pressure caps if I can avoid it. I forget the exact PN for the Toyota cap, it was stock for a mk3 (MA70) Supra though.

^ normally I would do the same but the ASI and Mishimoto rads are a different size than the standard Toyota one.

I thought about the stock cap but it didn't look like it would fit and I didn't try it.

Hopefully I'll get out of work early enough this evening to take a look at it and see how it's doing. It just didn't seem like it fit tight enough. It maybe OK though.

I have been using a MA70 cap for at least a couple years, no issues. Again, my rad is for MA70 Supra, but I think the cap design is the same for all mishi rads.

I'd say you're right. I can't really see them having multiple caps. Wouldn't make much sense. But then again.

I've got my stock cap. It wasn't very old so I'll try it to see if it fits. The Mishimoto cap seems to be working fine but it just seems like it's not really that tight.

I just didn't like the mishi cap because it is high pressure. I mostly find high pressure caps to be a Band-Aid to cars without effective cooling, and tend to cause all sorts of leaking and hose failure issues.

If someone could check the fit that would be awesome, it is getting time for a new radiator.
Is there any gap between the rad and the front support?

*Saw the pics, it looks like theres 1/8" or so gap? If that could be eliminated would the fan?*

Sorry to be slow in getting back Jeremy. Work has been hell.

I put in with the stock mounts so you could probably get it closer to the core support.

I'll try to get a measurement in the next day or so. I'd do it now but it's pouring freaking snow right now.

No worries.
Got the radiator; but the weld holes for the fan were WAY off. The fan will fit, I stuck it in there next to the radiator. I might have to bend the very edge of the shroud.
This is assuming I can get one with the holes in the right place.

I've got an ST205 engine, so not sure if a 185 engine has the exact same placement of the turbo, IIRC it doesn't.

And the clutch slave is no where near the fan shroud, for whoever mentioned that.

Cool. I didn't try installing my stock fan but eyeballing it, it looked like it would bolt up. So much for eyeballing.

I've been happy with mine so far. It's running cool and no issues with the radiator. I think you'll like it.

It may have been the starter, it was several years ago when I tried it. Regardless a 56mm rad placed my OEM fan motor (on an RC if that matters) smack in the middle of something else. I guess it depends how tall the standoffs for the fan shroud are though.

It was probably the turbo, IIRC the 205 moves it over a little bit.
I have an RC fan on mine. Same shroud, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. :)
