Im looking to do a swap on my 87' st162 celica an was just wondering what motors would mount up to my current FE mounts an tranny (temporarily on tranny) an wire up relitivly easy (im perticularly looking at a red top GE with harness an ECU or 215 GTE also with ECU n harness) (I have a buddy thats good with wiring but the easier the better) the car is my daily an am hoping to do that swap in a 2-3 day span max

Well any S series motor will bolt in with relativly little stress. So that is any 5SFE/3SGE/3SGTE.

As far as I am aware, the wiring for the 3SG motors gets a lot more complex after their second generation (after 93) but I have only second hand info there so I might be a bit off. But they have been done multiple times so if you have the resources, it wouldn't be a bad choice.

Dose the same apply to a GTE out of like a 91 mr2? Wirring an bolt up wise

I'm still talking out of my butt but if I recall, the major stuff will be compatible but there might be some minor issues with the MR2 parts, going from rear to front engine mounted. at least the harness might be a good bit different length wise, but there are some much more savvy people here who hopefully will set the record streight shortly.

Nkay cool, also if they make the harness for the swap could xomeone show me where to get them?

They don't really make pre-made harnesses for this swap, but Dr. Tweak of Pheonix Tuning will modify/combine yours to work for a decent price (once again, 2nd hand info but I have heard it repeated often).

Get a 215 if you can, might as well go big or go home. Unless you can find a dirt cheap 3S-GE in good condition.

Nkay, with the right harness it should be a simple enough swap then

So with the swap, do i use the GTE ecu an this guy will build a harness that will connect the engine to the GTE ECU an the GTE ECU to my car right?

If your are going to do this swap in 2-3 days make sure you do all your research on everything you will need. Like if you are going with a 3sgte and stock 162 trans you will need the 3sgte flywheel and pressure plate with the stock 3 or 5sfe friction disc. Dr.Tweak is the pearson to have make the harness for sure. There is some good information on here. Good luck man.

Yes tweak will need the old harness or one stripped out of the junkyard of the same and the harness that will come on the 3sgte.

Read my threads and all the stickies in the forced induction forum. Almost guaranteed your question is answered in there. You'll run into hiccups and gremlins you didn't expect, trust me on that. If you want to do it in 2 days you better have everything lined up and then some.

Theres a guy on mr2oc named mr220v that also does wiring for significantly cheaper than Tweak also. I havent seen anything from Tweak on here in a long time. Not saying hes not doing it, but just saying hes not the only name in the game.

Isn't a 215 a bit of a bag of dicks to get parts for? This is his daily afterall, I'd get a JDM 185 halfcut for ease of everything.

The 215 shares a lot of parts with the 205. Its not as hard to find parts as everyone thinks.

What breaks?

We can get timing belts, water pumps, tensioners, crank pulleys, belts, etc.

What else do you really need to be able to get? Those are the common things that break/need replaced.

Don't they use COP instead of a dizzy? Yeah you can get pretty much everything, but how quickly?

Yes they're COP. Doesn't mean you can't find them, they're not that hard to come by.

When I did the 215 swap into a 4th gen I ordered all the parts and had them in 3 or 4 days from New Zealand. That was a full engine reseal kit directly from Toyota. Came in just under $500 for everything.

I do gen4 wiring for pretty much any celica for $450+$30 return shipping. Here's my site if anyone is interested :

www.mr220v.com

I've done a ton of gen4 wiring for the sw20, and plenty of gen4 harnesses for celicas and even a couple of rav4's

^ That guys work is top notch. He did the wiring for my 20v swap years ago. Never once had a wiring issue. I'm a mechanic as may of you guys know. I have no doubt. Could wire up just about any swap I wanted to, but I never would. I don't even know what Doug is charging for a harness these days but whatever it is its not worth the headache of me doing it myself. His price (whatever it is) is a fair one.
