View Full Version : Celica ST183 Convertible - No longer starting / Stalling

06-23-2013, 03:11 PM
Afternoon all,

Got a bit of a problem with my ST183.
Last week she stalled mid drive but started straight away again then stalled again.
I tried starting her, she cranked then ran for 3 seconds and died.
Left her till the next day and started 1st time. So i changed the fuel filter as the OBD light came on (looks like an amber tap)
All was fine for a week until she cut out after i pulled up and answered my phone. Again wouldnt start but wouldnt even run this time. She cranks then dies without the engine running.
Left it for 5 mins and started straigt away.
Got home and checked all plugs for corrosion, checked negative cables for corrosion and WD40 on all electric plugs.
All went fine after that until today, Started off and within 2 mins she was stalling mid drive.
Now won't start at all.
I am going to check the onboard computer - (jumper between TE2 and E1)

Does anyone have any ideas what else it could be?
I have so far checked :
1/ MAP
2/ EGR
3/ Battery
4/Negative connections
5/ Fuel Pump

Many Thanks

Check distributor out also. Has she had a tune up recently? Out of gas?

Jumper B+ and Fp and turn the ignition switch on. This will energize the fuel pump. If that does not happen, it could be a bad pump or bad wiring to the pump. I believe the fuse for the fuel pump is in the passenger side footwell, so it could be good to check that as well.

Definately not out of gas and have only just chaned the spark plugs, airfilter and oil. Problem happened before and after I did this.

Sounds like an electrical issue to me, perhaps a distributor or ignitor?

When the car is running, it doesn't seem like it is missing or running rough does it?

I would check the MAP sensor, the Dizzy, the temp sensors and the Ignitors. (Ignitors and Dizzy seem less likely from what you described, but worth a go anyhow)

Sounds like the fuel pump.

Right the car is back home now and done a check. I get an error code 14 which is ignitor or ckt to ecm.
Any ideas how I can check the ecm igt and e1 ? Do I use the data link connector or have to physically connect the volt meter into the ecm with the ecm still plugged in?

Im assuming this is the ecm/ecu?
I have the workshop manual but none match up to this? So cant find e1 and igt to test the voltage.

And this is the ignition coil?

Aha - first chance to get out and that niggling feeling paid off. First check distributor cap... see attached pics on the state of it.

So a new one has been ordered :)

Okay so I still had a problem with the car... found that the car would still stall... The error code is 14 which says there are several attempts to receive an ignition signal to ecu which failed so it disables the fuel injectors...
After some trouble shooting I found the pickup coil is reading 196 ohms. The car manual says max it should read 180 ohms (min 140)

Anyone ever had this problem before?
