View Full Version : Replacing oil pan gasket ( 5sfe )

Well among one of my many issues ... A annoying oil leak is one of them... I've traced one part of the problem to the oil pan gasket ... Mainly the edge right next to the trans , under the engine cross memeber ... Soo seeing as I have the best days off ever ( midnight shift with Wed Thurs off ) I figured I'd tackle this issue

Jack up the car

Remove both engine cross members ( be sure to support engine / trans in some way to make removal easier )

Look at all the room u have now

I ran outta beer so that's as far as I got for now had to get fresh case in the fridge before they closed ...good to go for couple more hours ..

Toyota doesn't use a gasket, per se. The oil pan is sealed with Toyota's Form-In-Place-Gasket, if you have that on hand -- though of course an aftermarket gasket can work.

Yes indeed they do FIPG 103

Next you'll want to drop the front piece of your exhaust outta the way

Then there's a shield ? Support ? Thing blocking one of the pan bolts

And 19 bolts later she's ready to come down ... I found this is a good way to break her lose from the sealant

Nothing stuck to the pickup ... No foren material in the pan 😊

Now you can definitely see where the sealant got smeared out if the way not really doing its job

Now for clean up I had this handy drill attachment ( leant out my dremel or I'd use that )

Now it's off to the Coin op with a bottle of super clean to clean up all the cross members / misc parts

Everything else is pretty straight forward ... Seal up the pan and reinstall everything

Finish it off with a genuine yota filter

Were you successful (no more oil weeping in and around that particular area)?

I had a very minor pan leak on my 93 vert. Was going to replace lower bearings & oil pump, so did all that at one time. Previous owner got her sludged up a fair amount - had to hot tank everything to get everything out. Primed & painted the pan with engine enamel. Turned out great. Hope you get the same results. Your bottom half of your engine sure looked good & clean - very encouraging that your engine is in great shape.

Thanks yup no more leaks around that area. She still leaks from up top..distributor has a small one , and then maybe back of valve cover ? now time to zero in on those

I had to do this not too long ago. Cleaning all the old gasket off is key to getting a good seal when reinstalling the oil pan.
