:yes:I am pretty sure that I have figured out why my newly purchased car will not stop misfiring after changing the plugs and egr valve, idle air motor, and vaccum lines it is still surging and putting out the most toxic fumes I have ever smelt. So...I noticed some rtv sealant on the distributor and while the car was running put my ear to it and BINGO! My misfire is due to my ignition coil arcing out! the ticking sound I heard was the same as the surging the engine was doing. I hope I am correct and was wondering if anyone would tell me what other toyotas(make and year) has a 5sfe 2.2 size engine that I could go to pick and pull and get a compatible coil? Thanks for allowing me to join! This forum has been so helpful I am going to donate as soon as i post! Candice

The 5s-fe is pretty common, 5th and sixth gen (1990-1999) Celicas (GT and GT-S), second gen (1989-1999) MR2s (the N/A non-turbo variety), and Camrys (1990-?). There are three gens, 92 is a first gen. I don't think that the coil changed between the generations, but I'm not certain of that.

92 is Rev 2 of the 5S-FE, 90/91 was Rev 1.

Whoops... my mistake, 92 still had the Rev 1 motor, the Rev 2 didn't come out until 93.

So you can still use any of those motors, you just don't have to hook up the knock sensor.

Also, 97+ Camry motors got changed, to not have a dizzy, so you will have to use your current motor's head to make it work.

She only wants the coil, not the whole engine.

Luckily Toyota used this coil on a crapload of cars:

The 5s had an external coil (not in the distributor), so I'd say cap and rotor.

Help, my 1992 celica gt 2.2l, idles high then low, high then low stalls out and dies after driving around for about 20 mins, this has been happening at the stop light, very irritating having to put it in park to have to start it at the light, I have checked the TPS, EGR, VSV, IAC, they are fine, cannot figure out what else could cause this, can anyone please help?

From your statement that this only occurs after 20 minutes of driving I'll take it that it only occurs at normal operating temperatures. Have you noticed the temp gauge fluctuating at all when this happens? Does it still occur if you switch into neutral? You don't mention whether this is an automatic or manual: if automatic, does it die if you switch it into park, or second, or let it idle with your foot off of the brake? If it still dies in neutral or park, does giving it gas keep it running? The high/low/high/low idle sequence you describe, is this over the course of the 20 minutes or all in succession while stopped? Do the lights respond to the changing RPM? At what RPM does it idle (that unpleasant odour you mentioned previously is also a symptom of an incorrect idle speed, which should be 800+/-50 RPM)?

More direct diagnostic questions: Is the intake air temperature sensor plugged into the air filter box? You mention having changed or checked a number of components which work with vacuum, have you inspected the various hoses you did not replace? Age makes for brittle materials which can easily crack when moved. Also might want to double-check your hose installation did not leave any possible leaks. If you're using the brakes at a stop light, I'd be particularly careful about checking the brake booster line.

It is an automatic, the unpleasant odor smell was fixed due to a bad map sensor, the car runs great until the engine gets to normal operating temperature, no the temp gauge does not fluctuate when this is happening, this problem only occurs after driving for about 20 mins., and only when coming to a stop, I have to put the car into park from drive and then start the car after light turns green to go, then when driving car is fine, I can however keep the car running at a stop with one foot on brake while holding down the gas pedal a little bit, if not it will spuuter out and die

Is there a temp sensor for the ecu itself? Try that, also have u checked the engine to make sure u don't have a weeping hg?

I also noticed what is really strange when I come to a stop and the car stalls and dies, as soon as I put it in park and restart the car the problem clears up and then I drive for a while then come to a stop and it acts up again, earlier this evening I tried experimenting by not waiting for the car to die out, instead I put the car in park and turned it off, then started it back up and problem was gone, until coming to next stop, and so forth.

No, check engine light is not on

that sounds to me like an Idle Air Controller issue. The stepper motor in it "resets" when the key is turned off. Perhaps its failing and checks ok under garage conditions and fails after it gets hot. Maybe a bad coiling in the motor.

That sounds like a good suggestion, ok I do get a code, not from the check engine light, but from the overdrive light, which is code 62?, cannot find that code anywhere?

nevermind the code 62, found out it has to do with the transmission, not the problem im dealing with

Are you sure the 1992 celica 5sfe has a stepper motor in the IAC valve?

Facime
04-07-2013, 07:08 PM
I dont actually. Ive never taken one apart so couldnt tell you exactly whats inside one from a 5S. Ive only personally dealt with the IAC on other toyota motors but they are generally all the same principle: An electrical device controls a mechanical means to open an orifice to various degrees. They usually fail in one of two ways. Either the orifice gets gummed up with deposits or the electrical portion fails to "step" correctly. The other possibility is that the motor is given incorrect signals from the ECM thanks to a faulty temp sensor elsewhere. The 5S uses an Idle Speed Control valve (ISC), but the principle remains the same.

Your description to me sounds like too much unmetered air is reaching the intake. Initially I would be looking for a vacuum leak but you say it "resets" after shutting the key off and can even be prevented that way. That rules out a leak vac leak for the most part although I would still check for one using the gas from an unlit propane torch or a spray of carb cleaner around suspect areas. That is why I lean towards the the ISC. Here is the procedure for testing it:

1. Bring the engine to normal operating temperature with transmission in N .
2. Using a jumper wire, connect the terminals T or te1 and E1 of the check connector.
3. The engine rpm should rise to 1,000-1,300 rpm for 5 seconds. If rpm is as specified, the valve is functioning properly.
4. If rpm did not function as specified, stop the engine and disconnect the jumper wire.
5. Disconnect the ISC valve connector.
6. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the +B terminal (middle terminal) and the ISC1 (ISCC) and ISC2 (ISCO) outer terminals.
7. The resistance should be 16-17 ohms on the 3S-fe engine or 19.3-22.3 ohms on the 5S-fe engine.
8. If not as specified, replace the ISC valve.

The problem is it may be an intermittent issue or just on the edge of proper spec. I would also check the resistences of the temp sensors.

For me, when Im struggling with diagnosing an engine control problem I always revert to backprobing everything at the ECM. I had a similiar issue on an 85 supra (6M) in which the idle was errative and the IAC didnt seem to be functioning properly yet the unit itself met spec. By backprobing the ECM I discovered that the previous owner had done some wire splicing and there were two wires in the harness that were the same exact color, one for the IAC and the other for...my memory fails me, but the voltages were wrong. Obviously swapping the wires fixed the problem. My point is that even though a control device may check out ok, you need to also be sure the ECM is receiving that information correctly. The BGB has a pinout diagram with voltage/resistance specs and I beleive most chiltons have the same info.

I found out that when having to restart the car now, It does not always correct the problem now, I have broken traction twice now because I have to quickly through it into drive from park after the stop light turns green, good thing a cop was not around, because I would have gotten a ticket, they would not understand car trouble. Maybe you are right about to much unmetered air into the intake, is there a vac line where the air intake manifold is?, and if so where is it located? Another person I talked to told me that there is only two things that would cause this car to search like it does when idling high then low, and they said either a vac leak, or incorrect idle speed, I have took dash apart, checked all wiring, and ecm, they are all excellent.

Facime

There are lots of vacuum lines...

As I said, if you have a propane torch you can turn the gas on (leave it unlit, obviously) and point that where you suspect a vacuum leak. Your idle will change as the gas is sucked in instead of dead air. You can use a spray chemical like WD-40 or carb cleaner in the same manner. I just prefer propane as its less messy.

Ok, but what makes it so hard is I do not even have an idea where the suspected leak could be. I have checked all the places I would have thought with a stethoscope, and came up with no leaks.

anything can leak, the easiest way to find one would probably be to use a boost/vacuum leak tester that pressurizes the intake/vacuum system with the engine off, making it really easy to listen for leaks.

This and a spray bottle with water works wonders. If you can't hear the leak, the bubbles from the spray bottle can show you where it is.
