Ok , So summertime is comming up and the Celi with Awake from her slumber Time for some Maintenance..Soooo Questions

1990 Gts 5sfe S53

Im looking at Replacing the Clutch and when ordering it asks for Production Date Mine is 04/90 So it groups me in Clutches 9/89-4/90 Which are generally 30$ more exspensive.

My question is whats the difference ?

Also I was also looking at replacing my trans (2nd gear grind) I can get a s54 out of a 95 GT wit 113k on it..Now the clutches are the same from 5/90 to 99 Soo even if I swap to the s54 I'm I gunne be screwed By the One month Difference ?

Don't take my word for this but from when we did my clutch, I believe it was the bearing/fork difference in size. That or they sent me the wrong bearing or I ordered wrong but I don't think so because I still have the bearing and it fits my later S53 fork but not my early S53 fork.

Ahh ok thanks maybe more ppl will chime in ... But if that's true then if I went with the s54 and got a clutch from 5/90-99 then I would have to buy a new fork as well. Which doesn't seem to bad ?

Yupp from the sounds of it you are Correct acidice . I called Comp Clutch to ask wat the Difference was between the 2 kits and only thing thats different is the bearing size.

You wouldn't need a new fork, you may need a different throw-out bearing is all.

Don't use a throw-out bearing from a kit, always, always get a toyota or Koyo bearing.

Yeah thanks :).. Toyota one was the plan... Im building a cart at Lithia right now (bearing, couple sensors ect ) Going to wait for Taxes to come back to See if I pull the trigger on the S54 or just stick with my S53.

Also don't forget the lube :P

Clean the input shaft where the TOB rides and the pivot ball, then apply high temp grease there (white lithium grease works great). Also the clutch should come with some lube for the transmission input shaft splines.

hahah ooohhh I never forget the lube ;) Thanks, all the Tips and hints are welcome ....anything else I should plan on doing while Im there .. Its looking like a Stage 2 comp clutch kit, Toyo throwout bearing, Fidenza flywheel aanddd mmaaybbee the S54 ( nothin local but parts dealer can ship one in for about 500$ from a 95 wit 110K on it)

Replace your slave and master and the soft line between them.

Don't over lube. If you get grease on the friction surface of the clutch/flywheel/pressure plate you can smoke the clutch.
