View Full Version : I've thought about selling the Celica

Hookecho

Honestly, after reconnecting with motorcycle riding I feel like I don't need it. I kind of want to sell it and my Mazda truck to upgrade to a full size truck with a V6, extra cab, and leather. I don't drive the celica a whole lot. I've put a ton of money in it and it rides like a new car. I'm just getting older and wanting different things I guess.

Tough choice. The bad thing is I don't know that I could see it go. I certainly wouldn't sell it to anyone local. I couldn't stand to see it around. I'd probably trade it to someone for a truck or knowing me I'd wind up with guns.

its just a car.

Having owned so many different cars in my life I am always a little confused by such emotional attachments to inanimate objects.

02-27-2013, 08:47 PM
If that is what is gonna make you happy do it.

I get too attached and have a hard time letting go, which is why Chaos is still sitting with no intent to go anywhere.

If money isn't and issue, just park it, like it has been for the last handful of years. Drive it when you need a change, and trade your fake Ranger in toward a nice F150.

Chances are you'll never get back what you put into it. I would let it be a garage princess like Murg suggested. You'll get tired of driving an automatic truck eventually and want the stick back for weekend drives I bet.

Hookecho

Money isn't an issue. One less vehicle to insure might be nice. I do get tired of working on the damn thing. The Celica has been a money pit. I have developed an emotional attachment to it though. A labor of love. I don't flip cars so i'm not desensitized to them although I wish I was at times.

I probably won't get rid of it. I am going to entertain the thought though and maybe test the waters. I want a low mileage Ford F150 Lariat or King Ranch. I won't do car payments.

I give terrible advice in this field because I'm emotionally attached to all my cars. I have never even sold one of my celica's, and most of mine don't even run.

That said, I wouldn't sell it. It's been a labor of love for you but to anyone else (Ctech folks excluded of course), it's just a hopped up 20 year old rice-mobile. Not that some teen wouldn't want it, but you know it wouldn't get the love that you have been putting into it.

I do get it though, the car might feel superflous now that you have a bike. But really, they are different experiances and I bet you will never feel as excited driving a half ton pickup as you do in your little red turblow beast.

Besides, somtimes it rains and you still want to have fun driving...

I hate to say it, but losing my celica has been a positive in my life. I spent a weekend or 2 a month fixing something that went wrong. Partly my own doing due to being an inexperienced engine swapper, partly because the car was just a curse. The thing left me stranded multiple times. I thought I had an emotional attachment. Now I am putting my money into my house which is actually yielding me a return on my investment.

Chaos not being a DD has been very eye opening as well. She still isn't going anywhere though.

Even though I'd like something different at times the Celica is part of my history. Part of my definition. I do want a nicer truck though. Maybe someday.

That's my problem. After my last accident I had to use my swap as a daily driver. Totally not meant for a daily driver.

Murgatroy
03-01-2013, 05:28 PM
He has less than 10k on the car since he bought it, and the majority of that is from driving to a Dragon Meet. He has never used his car as a DD. It has always been his project/toy car. Which is why I think it would be foolish to get rid of it. The car doesn't require attention, it just receives it.

Trying to daily drive a modified hotrod is a nightmare. I thought I had learned my lesson with my Camaro when I was a kid, but it would seem I didn't, because over the last dozen or so years, Chaos has become less and less user friendly. Not the to the point I have thought of selling her (the thought of losing her makes me sad) but to the point that I hated driving her. I would take the truck every chance I got. She was loud, stiff, ill tempered and for the last handful of months she was getting less than 20MPG.

It has a lot to do with how I view the Mustang now. She might get a few new shiny parts, but she is going to remain user friendly.

At the end of the day, Bruce and I are getting old. Look at the Captain, who is only as young as he feels, and he drives a Benz as a daily instead of Princess.

There is a line where a Celica crosses from a commuter and becomes a pain the in ass to maintain. I don't think a stock Celica crosses that line, but a swap, or built suspension, or gutted exhaust, or full concourse restoration, that starts to cross the line pretty stiff.

Hookecho

I daily my Ranger. it has 300,000 miles on it. Nothing but oil changes, tune ups, and gas. It is old and tired. I want something to comfort aging bones and I want creature comforts. A Celica can't give me that every day. I will never get rid of the Celica. I know this. I want something nice though. The real way to have it is to sell what I have. That is why I had thought about selling the car. I may trade some guns though.

Idk, as a daily, I had no problem getting rid of my celica. But in your situation, as a weekend fun car, I would sure have a hard time parting with it, especially after all the work you put into it. IIRC the paint job was very recent and the swap was not that long ago either.

No Moostang. I will admit that I do like like them and always have but there are too many out there. At least with a Vette it is fast, handles amazingly, is cool looking, and not everyone and their Mexican brother has one.

The one I want is in another state. It is very nice, well maintained, interior is great looking, black on black, and already has all of the mods needed to gain an extra 75hp. I have talked with the owner several times and he has sent me loads of detailed pictures and been very up front with me.

The Celica is sold as of now. The nice lady that is buying it is an enthusiast and understands what she is getting into to. She is going to pick it up Tuesday.

I've been in the same boat - wanting to sell out - but for different reasons.

I just don't have the proper working environment for all the projects I took on. A one car garage and a driveway with a **15** 5 degree slope.

I have decided to forget about the GTS "resurrection" - and just to transfer everything I can from the GTS to the rusty Alltrac that I have - beginning this spring.

Still - I have my old reliable ST and value my Celicas.

Glad to see that you are still hanging in there, Bruce.

I cried like a little girl at a goldfish funeral when my Celica drove off in someone else's possession last year. I had it over nine years and personally drove 165 of its 208k miles. Part of it was the shock - I already had the new car for about a month before finally deciding to wash the Celica, take some pics, and post it on craigslist. I had kicked around the idea of keeping it as a project car, but it just had so many issues and did not make sense at that point in my life to dump any more money into a 12 year old car. Anyway, I gave it the final bath, had a great afternoon taking pictures (http://www.muxon.com/celica/) and writing up the listing. Got the first call 50 minutes after posting, and they made an offer, picked up cash, and drove it off no more than two hours after posting.

I so wish there were an 8th gen...

Someone offered me a 2003 Dodge Dakota SXT 3.9L 5 speed and $1500 cash for my car. I'm awful tempted.

The truck is in Excellent condition. Was just serviced by the dealer with a full tune up, belts, and hoses. All service records were kept and it was cared for. Does't mean it can't fuck up on me though.

I would much rather have an extended cab truck with power doors but the extra cash is really swaying me to settle.

Why not. My car is older and more trouble to maintain. My truck is old and pushing 300,000 miles. The Dakota has a pretty damn good reputation from what i have researched. Much more cab space than my tiny Ranger wannabe. More pulling power than my 4 cyl.

I really hate to let go but I know if I keep the car I will always spend money on it. It's time for me close that chapter. It's not until recently that I genuinely realized just how tolerant Jennifer is in respect to my toys. I sat down and added up everything that I have spent on the Celica, guns, ammo, motorcycle, tools, cop stuff, and the general guy stuff. I could have half way paid my mortgage off. It made me feel a bit irresponsible. Because I don't need any of that shit...except for a few guns and tons of ammo of course.

So I'm like you Mike. Time to invest in better things. I'm selling off guns and keeping my 2 AR's, my 2 Glocks, a shotgun, a 22 rifle and a 30.06. The rest are gone. I'm buying Jennifer a motorcycle because she deserves it for putting up with me. No more projects unless it's for the house.
