View Full Version : 91 celica engine heat

Hey again everyone.

just recently got my celica back up and running and remembered how hot it always runs.

I have aftermarket extractors, pod filter and a little CAI, but its very hot in the engine bay. Would it be a wise move to invest in a st185 bonnet, or cheaper alternative, buy a gt four scoop and put it on myself? would that help cool things down a bit?

If what i wrote wasn't clear.. Would installing a bonnet scoop cool down my engine bay?

anything that lets heat out of the engine bay would help

Getting an Alltrac/GT4 hood would definitely help. If you don't have a front mount inter cooler, that would make a big difference.

Its the 5s-fe so i don't think there is a point to a fmic.. i was just thinking if it would cool down the general air in the engine bay, im leaning towards upgrading radiator+fan and getting the scoop.

The extractors add a TON of heat without a heat shield. Invest in some quality extractor wrap.

You could also go the uber low tech route and shim your hood to pull out a decent amount of heat until a better solution presents itself.
FYI, this should only cost you about $5 worth of hardware to do.

I see. I thought you had a half-Trac.

Keeping the exhaust hot keeps it flowing better. While you want to get heat out of the engine bay, cold exhaust gas moves slower and reduces engine efficiency. Wrapping or at least putting a heat shield on the exhaust would be advisable.

good advice, where could i buy a heat shield for big extractors?

Start there:

eBay Extractor Wrap (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-WIDE-x-10-METRES-HEAT-PROOF-LAG-WRAP-SUIT-EXHAUST-MANIFOLD-EXTRACTORS-TURBO-/160931616335?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item257845964f&_uhb=1#ht_2276wt_978)

Ceramic coating does wonders as well.
