I have started working on my car for the new year.
My current plan is to start with the interior and work my way around the car until it is finished.

My first step is to strip the car of its interior components and fix the little things and do a good power cleaning.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/2013-01-01_19-47-46_369.jpg

My second step is to replace the Speakers, and Radio.

My third step is to paint the accessories such as inserts and covers and stuff.

The fourth step would be reassembling and addressing any further issues I run into.

My questions are as follows, what do people generally do to there interior? I was also thinking of light weight stuff, like seats, what aftermarket seats work well in our cars (5th-Gen)?

Other thoughts, I will be going with a Kenwood audio build for my sound system.

Being that my interior is of the blue variety what color would accent it well? I was thinking of going black or possibly silver.

What would go in that spot that is missing?!?!?!? :inq:

Here is one of the repairs I have made so far...

Silicone and a Piece of Wire can fix pretty much anything. easily as strong as original.

what that piece is is the center Bezel around the shifter boot.

If you adjustable seats then that's where the controls would go. If you don't then its just a blank cover.
Have you thought about painting interior black or grey?

I never would have thought about seat controls, maybe I will find a blank cover somewhere on the internet or a junkyard, there are a few in my area.

you know I think gray might be a possibility because everybody usually goes black because it is easy and goes good with any color, I think if I did it would make the car too dark, I will see what I can find locally for gray paint,I should look for vinyl or plastic paint I assume......actually my dad paints car for a living ill just ask him what is best or just have him do it at his work. lol

At this time, no, but its currently an active project so more pics will come, wherever they end up on the forum I will try to link them to the same place probably in this thread.

I grew up around cars my dad paints cars for a living, and more than one of my uncles are certified mechanics. the Celica I just got in June 2012, it is my 7th car I think.
For some reason I am a 2 car kinda person, I sold my last car like 2 months before I bought this one. it was kinda weird having only my truck as my daily driver.
this car i wanna stay more towards gas mileage and functionality than for show or performance. something I can be happy with driving, I had a Trans AM before this. it was a fast and fun car but it always needed something fixed, it became quite a headache.

Looks like a fun project. I'm thinking a dark (maybe even metalic) grey might be a nice accent.

If I recall correctly, I think it's popular to use seats out of a 7th generation celica (00-05) in the fith gen. I could be way off base there though.

These cars can be very reliable and practical and still lots of fun.

And as always, it's great to see another new member inadvertantly slipping into the cult of the Celica!

I have been lurking this site sense I bought my Celica in June I now have some time to do some work to it

I took this picture 01-03-13

here is the speakers I ordered for my car:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=267-4305 4" front speakers

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=267-4307 5.25" back speakers

and the Head unit:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113KDC355U/Kenwood-KDC-355U.html?tp=5684

should be a decent sounding system, I am not into having a crazy loud system just one that sounds good.

Seat upgrades, most ST/GT guys get either GTS seats, or power lumbar GTS seats. 7th gen GTS seats are also an option, but some work is required for those, the 5th gen GTS seats bolt in, but no the All-trac seats (one bracket is moved).

You could also do a system 10 door panel speaker upgrade while you're at it.

I will have to do a junkyard run eventually here, I will see about the GTS seats, my seats have a burn hole and are really faded anyways. As for the system 10 doors probably not I just ordered all new speakers and that should be just fine for me. I could throw a system in it because I already have amp wiring to the back.

My new stereo stuff arrived today: http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1198.jpg I will be installing it tomorrow.

I have my stereo all back together now. Here is a write up on it.

The first thing I did was the front speakers. I figure it would be a good place to start. I had my seats out for cleaning so I wanted to do this before the seats where back in.

The speakers I got for the front are Kenwood KFC-1054S Sport Series 4" Dual Cone Speakers . These speakers preform well they are a perfect fit in the celica.

In the picture above I have the passenger side apart, and you can see the old pioneer radio that I will be replacing. there is a plug on the back of the speakers housing just leave it it is a terrible little plug I gave up on trying to get it off you really dont have to take it off as you can see. also i had to pull down quite a bit to get the panel down. Remember to remove the bottom kicker panel and the small trim piece above it it makes life easier.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1201.jpg
above you see that I added a foam strip I had lying around. t is probably not needed but I wanted to make sure there was a good seal to prevent rattles and reduce air from getting by if there was any.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1205.jpg
here is the finished product.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next is the drivers side. same as before just remove and install:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
next step is the stereo. I have chosen a Kenwood KDC-355U

I already have a Pioneer radio in my dash but it has quite a bit of wear and tear, there is a button missing and does not preform very well. It will be kept for some use down the road, I am not one to just throw out everything.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1215.jpg
This is my wiring harness I built, I enjoy wiring things. A little bit about me: I work for a friend on mine Installing security cameras as a side job.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1217.jpg
here is the finished product. It sounds nice, I can hook my phone up to it and control my phone with the radio.

I would have done the back speakers but the speakers i got would not fit so i have to find another solution for that.

Feel free to ask me anything else about it, there is probably more I can say but it would get too long I can't type that much.

That's probably something I should do at some point, still got the original speakers in mine. Good work!

With my interior all back together I will take a break, and in the meantime plan my next project on my car. The only thing my car actually needs is a clutch so that is high on the priority list but it is quite a bit of work to do so I will wait on that.

I read that what size are the ones that didn't fit

KD8KKT
01-23-2013, 03:41 AM
I got 5.25" Kenwood speakers, but there too small, I think a 6.5 would be the correct size for it. I have some life stuff going on right now ( my dad passed away) but I will start back up on the car when I get some free time again. My intorior is all done so I will probably do brakes or suspention or engine next, I will have about 1-2k sitting aside for the car to bring it back up to as nice as possible by summer.

Sorry for your loss. 6.5 speakers do fit in the rear that's what I put in my Celica

I will order me a set of 6.5" speakers and see if it fits correctly I mesured it and yes I think that is correct. YAY I am back on, My garage is now filled with tons of my dads stuff so room is scarce but I can still manage to do some work on it. summer is still around the corner.

Yes, 6.5 is the correct size. I just put a set of focals in my boxes, still need to get those back in the car. Is it an ST or GT?

I installed my rear speakers now. they are Rockford Fosgate R165 they fit fine with just a little room to play with. they sound awesome. http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/1/8/5/5/6/img_1235.jpg

KD8KKT
03-20-2013, 12:53 PM
well I took it out the other day when it got nice and the car still runs great, I am thinking that with just a new radiator and a good cleaning I can have the car on the road. as soon as the snow is gone, in Upper Michigan there is about 3-4 feet on the ground right now.... I think I will concentrate on the body work this year, it will motivate me to do the rest. my interior is done I am happy about that. so what are some recommendations on body kits? if I repaint the car it would make sense to install one at the same time.
