Has anyone ever converted to run individual coils instead of dizzy?

l0ch0w is using them for his generation 3.5 3S-GTE build.

I have individual coils on my gen3 3sgte, but I'm running an aftermarket computer. Audi 1.8t coils + aftermarket computer + using the distributor pickup for my timing signal (wish I had a blanking cap). The only downside is that they stick about an inch out of the head.

RacerX makes a kit that will work with the stock ecu that uses 1zz coils. I am using 1zz coils on my MR2 and the fitment is great.

What year? If you're car is new enough that it does sequential injection you can wire individual coil packs to batch fire.

For example (stock Blacktop 20V ECU)

I've got a 1990 but running wolf ecu. I've got 1nz and 2gr coils to use. The 1nz are JUST too short to keep the rubber seal on the top and the others are too long. Haha

1zz coils can be had in junkyards cheap. I'm running them with a gen4 timing gear, camry pickup and gen 4 cam wheel with a cherry pickup. controlled by a haltech ps1000.

Id like to run Individual coils but I am too scared to create a Frankenstein.

Waiting on the parts to do this right now. Mostly OEM parts, using some denso coils for a honda and supra ignitor on gen3 ecu. Let you guys know how it works out. http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=444574

I only went with coil packs instead of COP because none of the COP kits out there fit underneath the 205 intercooler...

On a side note I ordered my magnecor wires today... super easy and the pricetag was quite reasonable. Only $140!

even 1ZZ coils stick out? what about motorcycle coils? i have heard of people using yamaha R6 coils or honda CBR coils.

I also wanted something really really strong to light off e85.

There really isn't a whole lot of clearance for anything beyond stock plug wires with a stock 205 intercooler...

you can do that with a sparkplug

Not sure what you mean by that...

The fact is that e85 requires a longer spark duration and energy to light off especially at 30+ psi of boost and 8500 rpm... Breakup is commonplace for higher output ignition systems.

While many have achieved good results with 1zz coils and the like, it just seemed wise to go with coils that could output output nearly as much spark energy as a cdi coil, with durations longer than a stock coil... This still translates into a highly reliable ignition with little chance for breakup at high rpms.

My coil stats:
103 mJ spark energy
2.9 ms duration
40 kV Output voltage

Cbr/r6 coils were a no go for me because they require an external igniter or cdi box which is something I wanted to avoid.

Add me to the list of completed conversions. Got the gen 3 ecu and the COP mod done and running. I have to figure out what I am doing with my fuel computer more im just running on a 205 base map. Gotta hook up the wideband now. I am having an idle issue though, its high and it bounces... around 1600 to 2000 sometimes lower sometimes no bouncing... i cant figure it out, maybe its just fuel. If anyone has any ideas let me know please.

Those are what I had laying around to mock it up. I have since powdercoated the bracket red and used black bolts to hold them down. I'll get some pics when I'm back in kansas again.
