Check this out. The head gasket covers the coolant passages. Normal? This gasket is a gen2 3sgte going on a gen1 3sge so maybe it is different.

Look at the holes in the head the coolant goes through, then look at the size of the holes in the gasket.

edit: I do wonder if it would make a temp difference across the head though, would be hard to tell.
