Finally starting a project thread here. I have had the car since Aug 99. Its gone through quite a few changes, and its been quite the adventure.

The car was perfect when I got it. It started out red. I flew to MI to get it.
http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/7803/firstlovefq6.jpg

I was in a fender bend and my dad convinced me to use his painter friend to fix the car. The car offered to paint the whole car another color for the cost of paint.
http://img387.imageshack.us/img387/3064/newwheelsas0.jpg

I later regretted it since he disapeared and the paint washed and chipped off.
It did produce an awesome color when the sun was going down. I drove it like this for a while.
http://img187.exs.cx/img187/3179/cmsgt4sharpcorner23ec.jpg

Here I am at the 2nd Celica dragon meet back in 02 or 03.
http://img461.imageshack.us/img461/4681/angleatmo5.jpg

I blew the engine due to a silicone hose being sucked into the turbo and spraying all its oil out on the hwy. I was given such insulting offers for the car I decided to let it rot before giving it away.
http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/9843/img2757ph8.jpg

The weekend I blew the engine I decided I was done working on cars and went to get a 350z. I enjoyed the car for a while but decided I did not like debt so I went to bring my alltrac back to life. I ordered a new shortblock where UPS managed to loose amd smash. I then discovered MR2 guru in asheville and ordered a st205 engine from them. It took a long time for me to get the car done. I ended up paying the Z off before I could even finish the car.

Once the car was done it was sent off to a paint shop which ended up being a whole drama that involved the police. The guy did not even own a paint shop... but any how it was a long story.

After collecting my car, I took it to a real paint shop and had the car painted GT Silver Metallic. I now get to enjoy it a bit, and will enjoy it more once I get the AC fixed. Once I do my BBK I will be selling my Z. We are having a kid so there is no point for me to have a 2 seater anymore.

I need to clean the engine bay some as it still has a bit of dust in it. I may make a panel for the air filter as well. The contraption on the top is the water to air intercooler.

As for other projects I am working on now. I am working on gtfour inspired shirts.

I am also working on converting the car to 5x114 bolt pattern and installing my BBK. The brake kit will save me 12lbs of unsprung weight on each wheel in the front.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/2860/photoev.jpg

I am currently trying to remove my rear spacers but they seem stuck. I think I am going to have to use a hub puller or something to remove them.

I do love the way this car looks. That colour + the RC bits really modernize the look of the car.

PS can't you take screenshots?

I know I can take screen shots, but I post to instagram to update people on projects I am doing. That's why they are taken that way.

Thanks. I have been driving it around the past year. Once I get these brakes and 5x114 conversion done, I will sell the Z. Only two months left before my kid is born, so no need for a 2 seater anymore.

And Jon, that is me circa 1999. I had long hair most my life... till I started falling out like it was on fire.

Well my order came in from 1st toyota. For what I paid for shipping, the packaging is pretty shitty. I miss when I could get parts directly from TRD. They also did not send my wheel bearings, which I needed the most right now. I was hoping to drop off my spindles this week to get the new hubs pressed. Maybe it will still show, but who knows.

Anyhow, here is my nice new corner lights and the supra front emblem. I had to cut the top peg off, and cut 2/3's off the bottom peg. It fits well though. My old corners go into storage for those in case moments.

So 1st toyota is trying to say they packed the items and shipped them. Of course they did not. So I gave them all my info, and hopefully they will make this right.

cms-gt4

So my tie rod flip kit is now installed. It was harder than expected. I am keeping my dust shield and that prevented me from using my vice. I had to rig up a solution for mounting the spindles and drilling them. Drilling went quick, coming up with a solution to use them with my drill press was the time consumer. Here you can see the bottom and top of the kit installed. That stuff oozing out is epoxy. The one I did first was already cured and it feels solid.

My wife is getting sick of the time this brake project is taking me. The baby will be here soon, and I need this car done so the Z can leave. I drew up my possible caliper brackets. I am waiting on the quote from the steel place to see what it would take to cut the outline, then I will just drill my on holes once they get here.

Josh are the mounting holes between the ST185 and the 6g the same? I know that they are between 165/185, I'm not sure if that carries over to the common 6g as well...

cms-gt4
09-17-2012, 07:20 PM
Yep, the mounting holes are the same from 4th gen to 7th gen celicas. 185 brakes can bolt up to a 20x and 7th gen brakes can as well. Had I sold my 205 calipers I was going to buy the trd stoptech kit made for the 7th gen. I might had needed a small spacer, but it should had fit on my 185 based on some of the threads I found on the 6th gen and 7th gen forums. I still need to sell my 205 brakes. Hopefully soon.

My brackets are now done.

Started as a drawing. that I based off of measurements from an old bracket gtfour77 sent me with the kit. I tweaked it for my height difference and with some actual drawings I found of the willwood calipers and a bracket made for the 205. The 205 drawing was off by 1mm vs my template and my guestimate for height was off by 1mm too tall. Took me 3 or 4 plexiglass templates. If I was to do it over again, I would use some thicker plaster but it might be harder to cut the outer shape by hand.
http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3668/screen20120915at94504pm.png

I don't have any sophisticated machinery are know a whole lot about methods, so I came up with my own. Since I threaded my template I could not center the bit on it as easily since the hole was a little larger. I bought a long m12x1.25 bolt and cut the head off to center my hole on the chuck. I then swapped to the drill bit to get my hole.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6020/photo1pj.jpg

Then I had to tap it. I think its pretty hard to get a perfect 90 degree tap in metal. So I double sided taped the plexi template on it, and then screwed in the tap into the old bracket. I was then able to line that up with the threads on the plexi template and then I was able to screw in the tap and get a perfect hole.
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/7972/photo2vw.jpg

Here is my final bracket next to the old one that gtfour77 used with vette rotors. Now I just need to make my other bracket, then I can start working on the hydraulic system and getting back on the road. The baby will likely be here in a week, so I am busting butt. Doing this on top of working on the house, doing my job and preparing for the baby.

Nice!

What are the material specs and thickness that you're using for the bracket? Any heat or flex concerns?

I've been following your big brake since your original thoughts on the 205 4-pots....

cms-gt4
09-18-2012, 02:38 AM
The metal is 3/8s steel. Its some heavy duty stuff I ordered from a steel company. I had told them my application, then told them I wanted something a little stronger. Not really any heat or flext concerns. Though it looks small, its beefier than anything I have seen on most off the shelf kits. After doing this though, I do have confidence to had made something with the 205 calipers. I mostly opted out cause this was already setup for my 5x114 conversion and its super light. Too rare a chance to find a setup this light and cheap to maintain. Rotor rings are about $30 each so its just as cheap to replace rotors as it was on a stock alltrac.

One thing I did do today was fit my rays from my 350z. The tire size is of course too tall, but if I ever wanted to run 18s this would be a great option. I likely will always run 17s though. You can also get a better look at the supra pearl black emblem.

So it looks like I am to my stopping point with the car for a while. I have a couple small things to do like adjust the fender line I welded up to prevent rubbing, a new cotter pin on one caliper to make it quieter and then just a spot inspection after some more drives to see how ever thing is holding up. I also need to drop it off for an alignment next week. But now that I am caught up, I won't be messing with too much car stuff for a while. I'll still post around some, but my focus now has to be my career and skill set. I will try and post here to update on the shirts I am doing, but if you just add Noritoy to your favorite ebay sellers you should get some sort of notification once I list stuff. I plan on doing one gathering with Mark and maybe some of the other locals but other than that the car will just get some short drives here and there. But for the most part my energy will be going into my career and new family.

Looks fantastic Josh! I think this may be the first time in history on here that someone has called their project "complete"..haha. I understand though, life gets crazy once you have a little one. (mine is 11 months old now) But after everything you have gone through with this car, you have definitely earned it. Take the time now to enjoy your family, and enjoy the car too when you can slip out for a cruise here and there.

Thanks. Wish I could call it done. Likely never be done. Its just at a point where there is nothing I "need" to do to it. Well just a couple things. Need an alignment this week, then next spring I will finish the AC project. I did not need to do the brakes, but I wanted them done while I still had my Z as a back up. I will enjoy it for a bit, then once I get my career moving, I will do more.

They fit a st185? How tall are they, do they have built in sliders? I was going bride because I need to lower my position as my head sits against the roof even without a helmet. How much are you trying to sell them for?

Physlis
10-28-2014, 08:46 AM
Built for st184 by Wedge Engineering but would be an easy fit for a st185 if you have a welder, just flip 1 bolt plate. No sliders, they were included on the seats I had but have universal mounting holes drilled.

I don't remember what I even paid for them, probly in the $150 range. Honestly if you want them make an offer, they aren't doing me much good.

How tall are they? I currently have wedge rails and recaro sliders and they are too tall to fit the seats in the car. That is why I was going to get brides since they are just over 1" slider and rail together.

I'd have to measure them, but I'm not home for another couple weeks. IIRC they were fairly low profile, maybe an inch over the front mounting point and 2 over the rear to make the seats level. When I get back I'll put one into give you an idea.

Ok. I have a feeling it will still be too high. The recaro slider is quite tall too. I am waiting on a quote for the bride rails. I have a feeling that is the route I am going since the rail and slider are built in and just over 1" tall and I will gain the maximum head room that way.

have you considered a Recessed headliner?

That would probably be a ton more work, but a thought if nothing else.

I would have to remove the sunroof mechanics and make a roof plug to gain head space. I may do that some day, but that is much more involved and expensive than buying a lower bracket.

Thats a really nice and clean looking setup. Would have thought you might have shaved a little more weight, but it all adds up I suppose. How are they for comfort?

And yeah, keep making the vids!

Thanks. The seats are quite comfortable. I think the bigger weight savings come from going fixed back. The guts inside that move, and still being able to be approved for racing likely keeps them from being too light. If not for having a kid I would like to take for rides I would had gone fixed back, but these work for now.

I got some new mirrors from Germany. I chose them for 1) They are lhd glass, and 2) No electronic folding gimmick. I wanted break away mirrors so I don't destroy the stock ones. I might leave them black for a while and maybe paint them down the road unless I finish up a lip by the time I put them on. The weather has been cold and holding my project back.
In other news I ordered a bump steer gauge so I can accurately redesign my suspension. I am still trying to sell stuff to increase my 2015 suspension budget.

Josh, where did you get them, off of Ebay UK or one of the European Ebays? Just wondering. I knew these were out there and I'd like to have a set for my car at some point.

I got them off the 5th gen celica Facebook group. I think they are a better option than the jdm ones.

I agree, plus if you get the ones from the Continent the glass is correct for LHD.

I'll have to start looking seriously.

Nice. I said it before but keep doing these. It's cool seeing some content done a little more creatively. Good info too. You're doing some really interesting things in your suspension experimentation. Pushing way past what most people think about, which is great to see the concepts explored more. Anyway, I like it. :)

Thanks. Its all a big learning experience. It seems the more I read the less I know. I am trying to figure out enough to get the car to behave how I like, however I find there is a huge complex world of chassis engineering that I am trying not to get too deep into as it seemed to drag me down a rabbit hole that will keep me from ever finishing the car because it makes me want to do more things. Right now I am going to keep it simple, but try and make educated decisions.
Here is the video and blog post for bump steer readings. The blog has the data from the video, as well as lots of links for research. I had to reshoot several times but I tried to keep as much of it a concise as possible. Hopefully I didn't botch up my explanations. Much of the video covers setting up the car to measure. I'll be taking more readings with my new setup so I can near zero the bump.

If you were lowered a little over an inch would you be dealing almost entirely with toe out?

cms-gt4
03-30-2015, 03:08 PM
Possibly. I'll be running more tests when the new setup gets here. I have to do an alignment for each base height setting so it will take more time for me to setup the other tests. Hoping to do them in the next few weeks.

How's the quality of the hood?

cms-gt4
04-12-2015, 01:57 PM
Very good. The problem now is the mold no longer exists here in the states so you have to get them second hand. There were 6 from the initial group buy, and I think two more made after that. I know of one for sale right now, but most won't pay that price even though retail was quite high as well. The only grip about it is the cf trim is designed into the hood, so fake cf trim no longer matches. I plan on having new headlight covers made anyhow, so it won't be an issue for me.

So a small update. I had been working on my garage and decided since the car was in a good state to replace the connector that broke off from the water temp sensor. After I finished I started the car and it barely runs now. It gives me a code 22. So now I get to spend important mod time figuring this bs out. So much for driving this summer. I hope I can get through it quickly.

To sort of decompress I made a storage setup for my carbon fiber hood so I can swap between the two as I please and have a nice wall art.

Turns out I broke the EFI connector. I had an extra from the 205 harness so it was an easy fix, and the car has been on the road.
Spent last week working on the wife's honda, so I had to drive her to school in the alltrac. She loved when the boost came on.

Car's pretty flat on course. Do you think there will be a better turnout for the SM class in 2016?

cms-gt4
01-07-2016, 04:43 PM
I plan on going to more events myself, but I do not know how many others might be in my class. Besides my LCA, I have no major plans for the car. I don't want any down time since we have another kid coming next month. So when I get a chance to drive or autox, I don't want to have to deal with a car stuck on jack stands. I will attempt to go for points this next season though, and hopefully improve my skills.
