View Full Version : stock turbo upgrade...

hey guys, i have an st185, with the stock turbo, and i was wondering is there a way to just buy a rebuild kit for the supra turbo, and just rebuild mine with that kit? i've heard they are the same housing...not sure if it's true or not...and if i can't do that what would be an inexpensive way to do a bolt on turbo upgrade??

No they're no the same housing. And define inexpensive.

Rebuilding your own turbo=never a good idea. Unless you have an 80,000 RPM balancer laying around. CT20b turbo. Best bang for the buck IMHO.

I've rebuilt a few, haven't had a problem yet. You just have to make sure you mark the wheels/shaft. IMHO, hardest part is getting the effing exhaust housing off the rotating assembly. The rest is very simple. Only part you really have to be careful on is removing the nuts from the shaft, have to use a t-handle driver because even a very slight side loading will bend the shaft, so ratchets are a no-no.

If you want an "inexpensive" upgrade, send it off to a shop for rebuilding and have them upgrade the compressor and port the turbine housing a bit.

Just want to add not all turbos are the same. Toyota balances theirs after its assembled. Mitsubishi balances their parts before assembly so they can be rebuilt at home.

That said I have heard tale of people successfully rebuilding Toyota units themselves like WOT mentions, but honestly I personally don't feel a 26 is worth rebuilding or upgrading unless it's to a 27 or to ATS 27 spec. Much better to use it as an excuse to go with a 20b or better.

well that's all cleared up...thanks guys...where would i be able to find a ct20b...there pretty rare around here...
another question, again not sure whether it's true or not, is it true that the ct20b, is actually a ct26 but just the insides are different? or it says ct26 on the housing??people like to talk smack so i just wanna know the facts lol...

inexpensive would be no more than like 1000$ and even then ...

Bang for your buck the Supra turbo is probably better than the CT20b. The CT20b is a better turbo, no question. But assuming you're paying less than $200 for the Supra CT26 and $500 for the CT20b, the CT20b isn't 2 1/2 times better. And the Supra CT26 is rebuildable, AFAIK no one rebuilds the CT20b, the shaft is smaller than the CT26s so you can't use a rebuild kit for one of those [I may be wrong on that at this point, I haven't looked in a while]. Either one would be WELL under $1000, even with new gaskets. If that's the case go with the CT20b.

ALL the CT26s have the same CHRA [center section] and they all have the same size exhaust wheel/shaft [they're either made of steel or ceramic]. The differences are in the compressor/compressor housing and the exhaust housing.
A Supra CT26 bolts on to a gen I 3SGTE, and is bolt on to a gen II 3SGTE if you put the gen II exhaust housing on it. The CT20b will bolt on to a gen II 3SGTE.
If you're getting a CT20b, make sure you don't get a CT20 [it's the turbo off the 22RTE truck engines and isn't as good and won't work. Make sure it's a CT20b.

for the supra ct26 would something like this be good??

05-13-2012, 09:58 PM
If you're going to pay that much the CT20b is more bang for you buck.
That's new, but it's Chinese knock off new, which may be fine, and may be a $400 paperweight in a few months.
It's DEFINITELY not going to get you 400 HP.

05-13-2012, 10:06 PM
ok so thats a no no....where can i get a good one??or maybe you have one He with a 1000 parts...lol
but you said no one will rebuild a ct20b...so should i get a supra ct26 or stick with the ct20b??

You'll have to look around. They're on the 7MGTE engine [87-92 in the US, 87-89 or 90 in Japan]. You may find one on the Supra forums. I looked quick on Ebay and didn't find any.
The only one I have is on my current engine, not FS. :P

Which one you want to get depends on how much money you want to spend.

For a CT20b, check out mr2oc.com. They usually have bunches.

Rebuilt Supra CT26 for $525?

05-16-2012, 01:48 AM
For $525 you could get yours rebuilt with upgrading.

05-16-2012, 06:15 AM
For 525 you could run a 20b or for a little more a 27 if durability is what you want. (not saying a 20b ISNT durable, but there ARE people that have had exhaust wheels shatter)

I've had both the CT27 by ATS and a CT20b. I own two turbo Celicas. Both now run the CT20b. For mild mods and modest boost, IMHO the 20b can't be beat. I wouldn't push it more than 18psi because of the ceramic wheel and most of the time I run 11psi. The 27, because of it's larger wheels, takes quite a few hundred more RPM to come online. The 20b in my 185 starts making boost at 2700RPM and can hold 18psi to redline. The 27 isn't as "instant" as the 20b. I prefer less ultimate power over a wider range instead of a big hit for a few thousand RPM's. I've never run a Supra's turbo because of the exhaust manifold change you have to make. I'd be interested to know how well it responds with only 2 liters of exhaust flow to spool it up instead of 3.

The bracket under the 26 has to be modified to bolt on to the 20b and the block. It's not that hard, just some hole enlargement and some grinding. But is has to be done or you'll probably pull the manifold studs out of the head with the weight of the turbo. You should be able to do a 20b, new gaskets and a nice downpipe for a fair amount under a grand. The hard part is wiping the smile off your face.

For what its worth, Ive owned 20b turbos on 2 different MR2s, and on one of them it literally had about 100k miles put on it, and it NEVER had the support bracket on it.

Doesn't matter. All the same. It's off a GEN 3 3SGTE.
