So you're probably wondering what ol' cappy's been up to. A friend calls me up and asked if I'd look at his pickup. Says it just died on him while driving. He acquired it as partial payment from a client. He put in a new clutch, tires, gas tank, and battery. Bought a service manual. It started to knock, and he drove it til it died. I go look and the motor is locked. I offer my help if he wants to fix it, but he asks if I want it. How much? He says "I dunno, $500?" Sold! It's a 92 4WD, 5speed with air! 22RE. NO rust, No big damage, all original and the interior is in awesome shape.

After the $75 flatbed to my house:

So now I have to find a motor. I quickly learn that 22RE's are like solid gold. I'm staring down $1500-$2000 for a rebuilt. Kinda defeats teh purpose of a cheap truck. After weeks of pinging searchtempest (CL search engine) One pops up in NOWHERE MS. 45 minutes north of Tupelo MS. Rebuilt 45k ago for $400! 740 miles later it's on a stand in my garage. I stripped it down for prep. I removed the old motor and did the same. My garage looked like a 22RE exploded.

Tore down the original motor. This is what I found...
Something look funny?

The cam chain guide failed. Clogging the oil pickup tube. Crank shafts prefer oil. The head on the original was in better shape. Less stripped holes. I disassemble the thing and soaked in Purple power for a few days. After which I cleaned all the ports and re-lapped all the valves in. I assembled the engine and installed it. Nailed it on the first crank! Timing was only 5 degrees off. I immediately took it to emissions testing and it passed. Straight to DMV and got the tag and title. I replaced the liquid line on the a/c as well as the receiver drier. It held suction for three days so I charged it. Ice cold! The radiator leaked so I bought a new one. The brakes are SHOT! That's next week.

Today I decided to clean her up. The paint on the hood and roof is toast. I may just do those in flat black. Haven't decided.

As of today...

Not bad for $500 bucks.

Luni named it "killer" because it was such a killer deal.

Tab so far..
$115 radiator
$400 motor
$80 Engine gasket kit
$50 seals
$80 Timing sprockets and chain/guides
$45 a/c line
$30 receiver/drier
$80 chemicals (oil/antifreeze/cleaners/ etc.)
$235 rotors/pads, drums/shoes
$100 various other stuff
$120 cat back exhaust

Also just FYI, I still know where a 22RE is sitting, rebuilt, on a stand, just sitting.
Shoulda said something, Dick.

He did. Said the AC Amplifier out of an auto celica works. Your celica was an Auto celica Bruce. Yours should work.

yeah killer deal and great job gettin her goin. I would have just suggested rebuilding the original motor until I saw that crank. You can rebuild a 20/22r for about $600 and it will virtually drive the wheels off that truck, but that crank might have been past it. Next suggestion would have been to re-ring the new motor since you had it all apart anyway. Still, you shouldnt have any problems and if you do, you can always yank it again. Those trucks are rediculously easy to work on.

^From the master himself!

Thanks! I think the crank is re grindable. Since I now have a "spare" I've been tinkering with the idea of rebuilding it. That being said I don't want to ruin my "cheap" truck by spending too much on it. I just got back from some off road/hill climbing. That granny gear is a blast!

04-11-2012, 02:37 AM
Well you could just rebuild it for fun and experience then look for something to put it in. *cough1GC*. Im assuming those are both late model single row timing chains? If so the block isnt suitable for a hybrid but you could look for the parts to build an RTE.

I agree with not putting too much into a good cheap runner like that. I would also make the suggestion to steer away from the temptation to big tires on it. That always leads to more costs in broken parts, lift kits, new gears, etc. I would however suggest putting some LT type tires on it, maybe a good A/T in a 31/10.5 would be great for a daily/utility truck.

All in all you stole that thing! Even better deal than I got mine for.

04-11-2012, 02:49 AM
I hate you John...

You could sell that thing for some serious profit if you wanted...

A forerunner of the same year in about the same condition local to me just sold for $5000.

04-11-2012, 04:49 AM
In my neck of the woods they are being advertised for close to 8k! Though I have no idea if anyone is selling them for that. Even a beat to shit wheeler sells for close to 4K. Anymore the only way to get those around here for anything realistic is to buy them with bad drivetrains and rebuild or swap over body panels and paint.

04-16-2012, 06:02 PM
dead blowed up busted n discusted ones sell for 4k here if they run, and if so they have near 300k on the clock or more. john u have a 6-9k truck
