View Full Version : The bad ass exhaust manifold studs

Hey Aaron,

When I used to build engines, I would always replace the weak ass factory studs on S series engines with the hardened units stocked at my local dealer.

The story I was told (and believed) was that when Toyota turboed the 22R, that they started snapping exhaust studs, so they issued a hardened stud for replacement on this engine...

As they are the same thread pitch as must Toyota engines through the 80s-90s, they were interchangable...

Here's a description of them... They are BLACK, come with dry-red anti-sieze on the block side, and on the manifold side they have a male torx head.

I found a picture of them on the net from some off road supply shop that's re-selling them for a HUGE mark up.

My local dealer in AZ always stocked them, so I never got the part number. However now I have moved, when I went to my local dealer, he looked like I had 3 eye-balls.

So... riddle me this Aaron... what's the part number?

So... riddle me this Aaron... what's the part number? It looks like 90116-10150 in the photo. Used on many varieties of VZ-series V6 and UZ series V8, but as far as I can determine, never 22R-TE. That would have used 90116-10115. I don't have one here to look at. Maybe it is the same thing under a different part number, maybe someone told you a story.

The nut in the photo looks like 90080-17187.

I've heard the same story about the 22RTE studs being special and awesome.

Erm... well... I've heard a lot of stories, too, most of them told and re-told by people who are only repeating what they heard. Do not get too excited. We are only talking about hardware which doesn't really fail all that often anyway, ergo not much news, even if these are (or maybe not) the world's (allegedly) trickest (so I heard) exhaust studs - even if this guy I knew who knew someone else who told him they were AWESOME.

Keep calm and carry on.

I see the parts, but if you're asking a question, I'm overlooking it. Can you dumb it down for me?

Lol no question I was just trying to help him find them. Sorry

Ah. No worries. Just thought I was missing something.

BTW that "kit" is twice the price of the same parts purchased through us with the part numbers I listed in my first reply :amazed:
