View Full Version : VIS CS style Carbon Fiber Hood (found a kick ass deal)

OK, so I have been looking at the VIS carbon fiber hood for about a year.. I asked about it yesterday to confirm that it was the best option out there, and it is :-)

Only criticism was that it needs hood pins... but all GFRP (Fiberglass) and CFRP (carbon fiber) hoods do, so that's no concern. From what I was told, it fit well on 3 different cars, and has fit well on all cars I have seen them on.

I looked at all the online dealers, and the prices offered were outrageous! ($800 shipped area)

Looked on E-bay and they were selling for $504, with $150 shipping from a very reputable seller. ($654 total)

So, I contacted a dealer for them, and offered a low ball price of $450. plus $150 shipping ($600 total).

They countered... said "So sorry, they are all out of stock, with the next shipment coming in first or 2nd week of April, but if you are willing to pre-pay, we can offer you a special deal of $400 + $145 shipping". So $545 shipped. (to the lower 48). They also offer a pickup (they are in City of Industry, CA) for like $25.

What I personally like about this hood is that it also comes with the little hood spoiler near the windshield.

If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM, and I'll give you the contact details.

OK, so talked to my buddy...

Got pricing on all the celica hoods:
90-93 CS/RC style Hood (90TYCEL2DCS-010c) $400.00
90-93 The All Trac style hood (90TYCEL2DAT-010C) $400.00 this is not a regular vis manufacture, so quality is not that good. (his words not mine)
90-93 The OEM style Hood (90TYCEL2DOE-010C) $350.00 (this is like the non-all trac celica with no scoop/vent)
94-99 Celica OEM style hood (94TYCEL2DOE-010C) $350.00. (this is the base US model hood, they do not make an ST205 style)
2000-2005 celica OEM style Hood (00TYCEL2DOE-010C) with raised center scoop $350.00

I asked if he would offer a discount with volume purchases, and he basically said "don't push it, you're getting the best discount already"
Shipping will be per-hood. They do not offer combined shipping on hoods as they have a contract with the shipper. Sorry for those of you in other countries, but the $145 price is for the lower 48. If you would like a shipping quote, let me know, but I estimate it to be around $200US (just a guess, I have E-mailed him for a firm quote)

As he's basically offering a "buddy" price to the group, he's asked if I could do all the organization, and then send him a list of E-mail addresses and he will then invoice you all individually.

So this is kind of a Pseudo Group Buy Meaning we don't need to hit any target number to get the discount, but we do need to send him the list of customers all at once... I've already have 4 hoods on the list. I figure I will keep this open for 2 weeks (close it on 3/15). Sound good?

If you'd like to be added to the list, shoot me a PM with:

Screen name:
Hood Type: (Please use part number and description)
Paypal E-mail address: (I will not publish this, but need it for the distributor)

He will only ship to paypal verified addresses. Too many "I didn't get my hood" scams.

How easy are these to paint? Don't they have shrinking issues over time?

epoxy resin doesn't shrink much over time (what's used on carbon fiber), unlike polyester resin used on fiberglass. They are not any harder to paint than a typical fiberglass hood (scuff, epoxy primer, sealer and paint)

Ask him if he's good with CASH.

I will ask, but just an FYI, you will be picking up from VIS directly, so it will be a logistics issue of getting him there, getting the cash from you, him running in to the sales office, paying VIS, then waiting for the warehouse to pull the order.

I am just letting you know from past experience at VIS (when I picked up my MR2 hoods years ago), that it took me over an hour to go through the sales/pickup process. a year later, when I paid in advance with a pickup date, I just showed up at the loading dock with my confirmation and they brought the hood out (took less than 15 min).

Not trying to deter you... just letting you know of past experiences.

temperacerguy
03-07-2012, 06:51 AM
I am turning in the list on the 15th of March. This is a pre-sale. The 1st shipment is due in the 1st or 2nd week of April. When the shipment comes in, it can be picked up. Where my concern is that there has been far more demand for this than I expected... If demand exceeds supply, I'm going to ask him to supply by who joined the list first.

When I asked him about this, his response was:

"I can order more, just let me know in advance. thanks"

So, every day I have been giving him tabs on how many are on the list. and how many are pending...

Currently there are 12 FIRM sales (all of which are 5th Gen CS hoods), with 5 more "pending" With how cheap us celica guys are, I had no idea that there would be such demand for these.

VIS and Seibon are two separate companies which use different manufacturers... Proof of that is looking at the RC hoods that they both offer.

Yes it's hearsay. It's well documented on this and other forums that the CS style hoods from Seibon and VIS are different. Also, depending upon what forum you are on, they either say "VIS RULES, and SEIBON sucks" or vice versa...

At least for the CS style hoods, VIS and SEIBON are 100% totally different. The Seibon hoods were not taken from a stock RC hood, they were "hand copied" with the vent proportions incorrect.

There may be specific model hoods that VIS buys from another supplier which may be the same as seibon, but this is the exception, and not the rule. What comes to mind is the line from VIS about the All Trac style hood "These are not VIS manufacture, so the quality is not as good" as I said in one of the early posts.

Also, unfortunately there are alot of VIS knock-offs out there. In fact in doing this group buy, one was found on E-bay as they were offering hoods below wholesale that they claimed were VIS made. It turns out this vendor doesn't have an account at VIS, and the hoods he's selling are cheap knock-offs. So there's a chance there are vendors that are selling cheaply made knock-offs as VIS or Seibon depending upon what's selling that day.

However, I can assure you, the hoods in this group buy are coming from VIS directly, and in fact any local pick-ups will be done at VIS's warehouse in City of Industry.

I'm not sure if this has been answered already, but does the hood come with spray nozzles? With the vent spoiler, won't I need the taller nozzles? Thanks!

You will need the taller sprayers, but I doubt that it comes with it.

Yes, it comes with the spoiler, no it doesn't come with the sprayers (like all carbon fiber hoods) nor the holes cut for them. they are available from Lithia Toyota.

I will have to cut holes for the sprayers too? All the photos I've seen show the holes already cut.

The CS hoods I saw, had the holes cut, the AT hood did not.

Then I may be wrong. I have never seen a carbon fiber hood with the sprayer holes cut.

Granted, the CS hood I saw with the holes cut was used.

They do not appear to be cut out... they look to be dimpled like all other carbon fiber hoods.

Hey guy's I contacted VIS and this is what they wrote back to me- "Sorry for the late reply, did not catch your email earlier. They should be expecting few of the hood in two week. There was a little delay on product since they have to recondition the tooling, but hoods are on their way to us. I would also need your phone number since the shipping company would need that to make delivery appointment.
Thanks"

Just got mine yesterday and put it on the DD to get it home, I'll upload some pics later. It looks great though!

Put the hood on the DD, so I could get it back to my house and get it onto the swap, if only the DD wasn't so beat up hahaha
