View Full Version : Evolution of my Celica w/pics

I bought my 1990 GTS from a dealer in March of 2006. This was the 3hrs after my CRX Si was smashed at intersection by a Kia Sportage. Payed $1200 for it.

The Celica was in decent shape exterior wise and the interior was in great shape aside from being dirty. The red paint was faded on the hood and roof. The clearcoat was peeling everywhere.

When I test drove the car It had major vibrations, the struts were shot to hell, but it blew ice cold air. A definite fixer upper to say the least. So I took it home, cleaned it up and drove it for a week before a rod bearing spun.

Then I had a shear stroke of brilliance and decided to rebuild the engine and try to squeeze some power out of it. So in went some cams, shaved the head to gain some compression, I/H/E, and an SAFC. The mods definitely woke the motor up and it was fun to drive...for couple of months.

For some reason the motor had a bad vibration between 2000-3000rpms. I thought it was a motor mount and just dismissed it as such. Then on my home one night I go to pass someone on a two lane and lose some power. Usher in some rod knock and momentary depression and I limp back to the house. I disassemble the motor to find all of my bearings hammered to hell. So back to the drawing board.

A few months pass by and I gather the few things I need for another rebuild. I also decide that I want to install a body kit. So I order the famed invader kit and on it goes.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/bodyfront.JPG

I took the block to my machinist to have it inspected. He tells me it needs a line bore so I shell out the money for it. I left him the new crank, rods, pistons, and bearings so that he could balance the motor. Then I slapped the engine back together and dropped it back in the car. Fired it up and the car wouldn't move. Found out later that I stacked the pump when I bolted the trans up by not seating the torque converter properly. Being new to auto transmissions this was something I didn't know could happen so easily.

So the car sat for a couple more months until I scraped up $900 to fix the trans.

Once I had that issue ironed out I got the car running again. It drove great for about 6 months and the motor started giving me issues again of the leaking head gasket variety(let my sis-n-law borrow my car and it overheated. She kept driving it). I got frustrated and parked it. Pulled the motor and left the car siting for a while.

I got bored one day and had decided that the body kit was ugly and gay. So I took that crap off of the car and installed the factory pieces to make it look respectable again.

Well, I lost interest in the car for a while. During that time I went to the police academy and was working through my first year on the job. So from around July of 2008 and April of 2010 I let the Celica sit in my shop and I never touched it.

Then I decided to quit messing around with th3 5sfe and ordered this. $1500 delivered to my door from Venus Auto.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/3sgte_1.jpg

Then I started gathering the parts i needed to get things under way. I decided that I wanted to try and make the 5sfe auto trans work with my swap. So I did some necessary work to make the flexplate fit the crank and got things buttoned up. The auto trans worked fine and handled the power well. I was unsuccessful in getting the ecu to control the shifting so I put together a push button shifter that I used to shift through the gears myself.

Anyway, I got the swap running and was amazed with the power of this little motor. Here are the pics I took the night I finished the swap. Still hadn't cleaned the interior after letting the car sit for a couple years.

After a few months I really felt the need for a 5 speed trans so I called a buddy who had a wrecked 91 Celica ST and got permission to get the parts I needed for a conversion from auto to manual. Then I scoured the local pull-a-part and found a transmission from an 89 Celica. Then the work began. My auto to 5 speed swap write up is here.

A few months later I mad a first attempt to paint my car. It looked better than the primer.

Then I drove to Bugsy's house in Bama and hijacked the RC bumper, hood, lights, and some other stuff off of his wrecked Alltrac. Ate a fine Mexican dinner and hauled tail home with my loot.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/100_0583.jpg

Then I got it all painted and installed on my car. That was the moment when I really fell in love with the look of my car.

Then I made my second attempt at painting the car.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/100_0835.jpg

After having the motor and exterior squared away I decided to focus on the suspension. So I installed some KYB GR2's and some sway bar bushings. Also some camber bolts. I had some wheels that I bought from Seth(MCCelica) back in 2006 maybe? Before he joined the Corp. I bought some Falken 512 225/50/15's for them and got them on the car. I love those Wheels. They look different.

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j464/Hookecho1/100_0754.jpg

Just to show the negative camber. The car is on uneven and bumpy ground so that is why one tire make look to have more camber than the other.

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j464/Hookecho1/100_0756.jpg

http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j464/Hookecho1/100_0758.jpg

I then got a smoking deal on a FMIC kit from Cappy. Time to install it and get some cooler air in that motor.

Pics of the install. I wanted to keep the crash bar so I decided to to notch out a portion and mount the intercooler to it. It will compromise the integrity of it but it beats having nothing. I also installed some Speed Source poly engine mounts.

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/100_0813.jpg

http://www.celicatech.com/gallery/files/4/1/4/3/100_0836.jpg

So aside from that I have done some tweaking here and there and strive to make the car look and drive better every time I work on it. I had to replace the trans mount I fabricated with a factory mount. The one I fab'd had my motor sitting a bit forward on the driver side. Installed a rebuilt steering rack(pita).

This is the Celica as of today.

Brucie, did you figure out the cold start issue? Was I right?

Hookecho
10-15-2011, 08:19 PM
You're right about the fact that the STJ is pinned in different locations on the rev1 and rev2 ecu. However, when i first repined my harness to run the rev2 ecu that came with my motor, that is a wire that I didn't move at all because it wasn't listed on my pinout diagram. So it should be in the correct location for the ecu you gave me.

Does the rev1 JDM ecu the have the exact same pin locations as the SW20 ecu I have?

Luni
10-16-2011, 01:15 AM
Should man. Maybe your cold start injector puts in too much fuel. Try just unplugging it from power and see if it's better.

I've been working on the car today. Just doing things to dress it up some. I installed a set 92/93 tail lights that I bought from Jeremy. I also installed a turbo emblem that came off an Alltrac. I got a sandblaster for Christmas and put it to good use. I cleaned and ceramic painted the strut tower brace and AFM. I also cleaned up the calipers and brackets. Then sprayed them with ceramic clear coat.

Last summer I pumped some refrigerant in it and the compressor didn't cycle on. I jumped the switch to cycle the compressor and it blew hot air. So I said screw it and went on to other things. The other day I was going to make another attempt to revive the a/c but I found a broken refrigerant line going into the compressor. Where the hose crimps to the hard line was broken loose and swiveled inside of the hose. So I will replace that and see what happens when I charge it. I hope that last time the refrigerant leaked out quick enough to not activate the pressure switch and cycle the pump.

CollapsedNut

Dont just slap a new hose on and go. You need a vac pump to suck all the air out first. Dont forget the oil charge either.

Oh really? What size compressor did you use?

I sprayed the car using a Kobalt HVLP gun and a Craftsman 40 gallon compressor.

I hope you have gotton a bigger air/water seperator since I was there

Hookecho

Nope. I made sure there was no water in the tank, put a new separator on the compressor and also had one attached to the spray gun. I bought quality separators also so that I didn't lose pressure.

So actually your answer is "Yes, I did" but you just can't let me win can you? You all ways have to be the winner. Well I'm not letting it go this time.

I'm tempted to sandblast my wheels and paint them a gloss black. They look like they would be difficult to paint though. I guess I could adjust the width of my spray pattern to as narrow as possible.

Very nice! I wasn't a fan of red on celicas until now, something about that color and the shine just makes it sexy!

What is the horsepower rating on that compressor? I'm asking all these questions because I was looking at a craftsman 33 Gallon 1.5 HP compressor but my bodyshop friend told me it would be too underpowered to do an allover paint job.

Either way, can't wait to see those outside shots.

I told you wrong. I have a 25 gallon 2 stage compressor. The motor puts out a consistent 1.6hp while running. It handled painting the car just fine. It did have some pressure drop by the very end of a spray session but it maintained 30-35 psi at the gun or so. Which is all you need. Every time I pulled the trigger I didn't let off until the whole car was sprayed. I would say that anything smaller would probably struggle. A 33 gallon 1.5hp should work fine for you. If you are going to be painting or using tools all day everyday then you want a larger capacity compressor with a big motor. For the DIY kind of person a 33 gallon is just fine.

Also, breaking the body down and spraying parts individually like I did is what helps. Keeps your paint session shorter and allows the compressor to keep up.

Hmmm, well now i'm kinda regretting not picking up that compressor. But if another comes along thats a great deal like the last one, I won't hesitate to pull the trigger this time.

It's kind of hard because all the people I talk to are Prima donna bodymen so they all say I can't get by without anything less then a 220v 5hp 50 gallon beast.

Yeah, not everyone can afford a $3,000 air compressor. I'd be willing to bet they don't have one at home.

You can get the single stage 60 gallons for $200-300 and it will handle the hvlp just fine. They put out about 10-11 cfm @ 90 psi. Using a craftsman horizontal 26-33 gallon for panel painting is probably fine but for the actual body of the car, your right at the limits if not already over. If you need the compressor to be mobile, I'd say try to get an above the 30 gallon 120v horizontal with as high a cfm as you can find, but if not, I'd just get a single stage 60 gallon.

You definitely wouldn't want to paint a larger car than a Celica with a 30 gallon. My compressor kicked on after about 15 seconds of spraying and ran the whole time. I guess being a 2 stage helped it to keep up a little better. I would say that by the time I got 4/5 of the way around the car that pressure was dropping to the point where I was slowing down to get the coverage I wanted. Each paint session probably lasted only 2 minutes or so. So yeah, my 25 gallon was definitely pushing the limit.

I agree. Just don't know if the wheels I have would look good in white. I hope to eventually buy different wheels.

John hooked me up with a set of Intrax lowering springs this past week so I installed them yesterday. Dropped the car 1.5 inches. The ride is pretty good but I'm going to replace the front shocks with a stiffer one.

I also put the first coat of wax on the paint today. It really brought out the depth of the paint.

It's looking really good Bruce.

It looks like your springs dropped you about like mine did. The ones I have look to B&G. The ride is rather firm but not not enough to make the car a pain in the ass to drive. You'll probably notice a nice change in the handling.

Get you some Koni fronts. Since there isn't really any other "stiffer" strut out there.

Also, are those your original fog lights in the bumper? Did you just line them up with the holes in the front bumper?

Hookecho
04-30-2013, 10:27 AM
Yeah, they are the original fogs. Just lined them up and used 1/4x1 inch self tapping screws to mount them to the bottem of the crash bar. Had to rebend one of the mounting brackets a little but it was easy enough.

God damn that paint looks good.

What size wheels are those? Any rubbing over bumps?

I'm considering putting some H&R's on mine (which will be a slightly more conservative drop) but I'm on 17" tC wheels.

EDIT: Found answer to wheel size in thread.
