View Full Version : Is side feed a good idea?

So my buddy was talking to me about getting a side feed manifold from the 3SGE and putting it onto my 91 3SGTE Swap because mine feeds right over the valve cover. I'm currently in the process of running a FMIC so I thinking this may be a good idea, I welcome input from others.

As I understand it, it's actually a good idea as the side feed eliminates a lean condition on cylinder 3 that is present in the front feed manifold.

Yeppers, a side feed eliminates that lean issue above.

Also helps to lower the IAT as the cold side can be routed around the engine and not directly over it.

Yea I thought I read that cylinder 3 issue somewhere before. So what stateside cars came with Side feed manifolds? And I take it that it'll bolt right up?

F-or a USDM one, look for a 86-89 GTS intake manifold.

It doesnt eliminate it, it improves on it.

But yes, its definitely better than the center feed.

Way better. The plenum is also larger.

Keep in mind there's a few issues to work around;

-Cruise control unit will be directly in front of the throttle body so it needs to be removed or relocated.
-Vacuum hardlines behind the IM will not bolt up.
-A few electrical plugs will need to be extended, mainly the TPS.
-CSI will need to be modified or removed.
-Driver side engine hook/hard coolant line will not fit.
-You will have to notch the bottom of the plenum inlet in order for the IAC to work properly. (Assuming you use the 3SGTE throttle body.)
-Etc.

Not to discourage you or anything, I would definitely go with the side feed, just giving a heads up.

Bah I'm not to worried about that stuff, I'd figure that out along the way, I mean I hit crazy shit just trying to get the 3S into my ST. So how would the side feed manifold work with my TVIS? Would the runners bolt right up to it?

Yep, 1st gen 3SGE has pretty much the exact same TVIS system as the GTE.

I decided to port the runners on my manifold to to match the TVIS plate. Not sure if its really beneficial though.

Speaking of the side feed.... What do you think is better, side feed intake manifold with a front mount intercooler or standard intake manifold with ST205 WTA intercooler?

sidefeed+FMIC > std+205WTA

IMHO if you're going side feed, go FMIC... but that's just because piping a TMIC is going to have some hard turns to get to a side feed intake... my understanding is that the gen 4 IM fixed the lean condition on the #3 cylinder though...

DO IT!

Also, if your going through the trouble of adding a FMIC and side feed manifold, clock the turbo..

Already clocked, just working on a bracket for the wastegate actuator atm and trying to find a side feed manifold since Tim decided to sell his whole GTS :/

Shove it :P

Check my thread somewhere for wastegate bracket. I'm still looking for one for you (manifold).

Glad your friend (ilovemy86) contacted me on st162.net about your intake manifold. I have one available and I received your email as well.
Here's an image of it. I will PM you the rest of the photos.

I have an aftermarket sidefeed up for sale. Replenum'd with stock runners and uses a mustang flange. I was using a stock TB using ATS' mustang -> gen2 TB adapter.

If I could somehow hunt down a 4th gen intake manifold, would it line up with the stock 2nd gen head/intercooler?

No
