Joined this place a while back but never really went on til now. lol
I'm usually on ST162.net.

Anyways, for those that don't know me, I'm Andrew. I drive a '89 Celica GTS ST162 and am from San Diego. My dad is the original owner, and he gave the car to me after the car developed an overheating issue, and after I pleaded for him to not junk it. :P

Plans:
-New Sunroof
-New right fender
-Reseal windows so that the backseats don't get wet in the rain
-Coilovers (Still searching for some. Currently thinking of getting those Australian custom made ones or 5th gen Celica Megan ones, but I'm still trying to find more options.)
-16x8 BBS RZ +23 (already have them. Waiting for tires so that I can mount them. ;) )
-195/50/16 Falken ZIEX ZE-512
-Fix overheating issue for now
-Engine Swap: Debating between
-Any gen 3SGTE
-Any type of V6 motor. (namely 1MZFE or 3VZFE)
-An electric motor (electric car to save money on gas!)
-A combination of the electric motor and one of the
motors above. :naughty: (one of the motors would be
mounted in the rear)

How the Celica sits at the moment:

Goal: (Still haven't decided if I wanna leave my wheels silver or paint them white or gold with polished lip)

Yep.

Lookin' forward to being more active here. :D
Thanks for reading.

Why the third photoshopped image?

?
Sorry, but I'm not sure what your asking... lol

Why the third photoshopped image?

he's trying to show what the car WILL look like.

Nice car and welcome to the family.

Don't put 195/50s on those wheels. That's a narrow tire and you would be disappointed. Look into the 225/50/16 Falken Ziex 912 if Falkens is what you want. It's a wider tire than a 195/50. That's what I'm running and it's a great tire for the price.

A better question would be.. why the 'forever alone' face on the 4th image? that belongs in 4chan lol

Thanks for the suggestion! :)
It's not the most functional thing to do, but I actually want a little bit of stretch, not only because the wheels would clear my fenders better, but also because the total diameter of my 16" wheels with those tires would be the same as that of my stock wheels. (So no changes in the speedometer would be needed).
I'll probably switch to wider tires once my car actually has some performance mods. (i.e. engine swap. Can't really do much with an overheating gen1 3SGE IMO)

lol it was the only car in that floor in the parking garage. Felt like putting it there just cause. haha

Thanks for the welcome everyone! :)

i personally would fix the overheating before i did anything else, whats the point in having a car you can only drive to the store looking good

If your looking for coil overs check out the "Yes, it fits" thread in the 4th gen section. BurnyD Jr put a set of megans for a 5th gen on his 4th gen with little modification. It might be worth looking into, welcome to the site.

Yeah he's been following the thread over on ST162 as well.

I would really fix the overheating issue before anything else. Chances are it may be the headgasket, but it'll be worth it in the long run getting it fixed right the first time.

LOL. OK Fine. :P Forever Alone in the column. :P

That is currently on my priority list. Still trying to troubleshoot the problem. I can still drive my car, but I'm limited to a little more than an hour of driving. Although if an engine comes up for a really good price, I'll just swap that in.

Howdy Tim! :P I'm not sure if it's my head gasket or not... No white smoke and no milky oil...

So for my overheating issue, when my car starts to heat up, it makes this faint rattling sound, that becomes louder the longer I drive. I usually start to lose power when I hear this rattling sound. Also, my temperature gauge is stuck at below cold when my car starts heating up. Any ideas?

Thanks. :)

Where does the rattling come from? Sounds like you have more than just a cooling system issue...

Thaifight-R
10-03-2011, 06:49 PM
I only know it's somewhere in the engine, and that it only occurs when I accelerate when the car is hot. (and by hot, I mean after about 45min of driving)

Have you drained the oil and checked for metal? Sounds sorta like rod knock to be honest.

Thaifight-R
10-03-2011, 08:45 PM
Haven't tried draining the oil yet. I've only been putting more oil in.
So a rod knock can be inaudible until an engine begins to overheat?
The rattling sounds like taking a piece of metal, and shaking it in a metal container.

I'll check that out though. Thanks for the tip. :)

I always start with checking the coolant level then the thermostat. The rattle could be the water pump also.

Thaifight-R
10-04-2011, 03:59 AM
ok, I'll keep those in mind. Thanks! :)
I should also mention that I'm a complete neophyte at actual mechanical experience. -_- lol

Thermostat is located under the alternator right? How can I check if the thermostat or waterpump are still working?

it could be pinging (running lean) when the engine gets hot, have u tried the basic replace the the themostat (10 bucks) , radiator cap (10 bucks) and waterpump(20-40 bucks)

and before all this make sure the radiator isnt leaking

and a car this old just go ahead and do it, the thermostat u must remove and put it in a pot of boiling water to see if it pops open, waterpump can show no visual signs of failure but still fail

The water pump is driven by the timing belt. The only realy way to check it is to pull it and spin it. If it is hard to turn or the fins are touch the housing its bad.
