View Full Version : Celica got flooded in storage, it's a gut job now :(

So, my 87 Celica was in quonset storage, and we had record flooding this year and she sat underwater for a couple months. I had no way to get in to get it out.

Went to look at is the other day, expecting bad news, and what I got when I opened the door, was a mold covered interior. Seats, carpet, doors.. everything. The steering wheel is covered in fuzz. (i'll get some pics tomorrow)

I've had the car completely apart a couple times now. When I parked it the last time, I had finished a JDM 3S-GE engine swap but it wasn't running great. Oil was getting past the rings. But now with my interior wrecked, I'm re-thinking everything.

I'm not going to go to the trouble of stripping and re-doing everything, AGAIN for a measly 140 - 160 hp (best case scenario with header and intake) and front wheel drive... and I've already got a sweet ride for around town and a work van so I'm gonna turn this thing into a stripped-out, street legal All-Trac beast.

My question is this, (and sorry if this has been answered already, I haven't been on this forum in probably over a year) :

Can I swap the 6th Gen 3S-GTE into my 4th Gen shell? Someone must have done this swap already...

Or is it wiser to go 5th Gen or even 4th?

Have a look at my project thread (link in siggy)..I think that'll answer your questions :)

AND...how bad is it damaged? Think it can be salvaged at all? Body panels/etc? Only reason I ask is Jasmine (my '89) needs a full rear interior (everything from the door jambs back except glass). I had to strip her rear interior to put in my daily '87 driver.

Sweet, I'll check it out. :)

AS far as damage, I'm not sure yet. I'll know more when I drag it home. it's pretty nasty but maybe there are some cleaning procedures that could bring the seats back to life.., the plastic would be fine, after cleaning.

What color is her interior?

Nice build. That car will be wicked fast..

Has anyone swapped the AWD tranny in as well?... Now that I know the engien can be swapped, I need to figure out the tranny. I need AWD.

Mold is nasty but it CAN be recovered from. Ive done several mold recoveries and generally they clean up pretty good.

Get yourself a good respirator and a painters bodysuit and get in there with a shop vac and suck up the worst of it. you will want to start with a good clean fresh quality filter in your shop vac as well. Once you have sucked up the majority of the really hairy stuff, go to an equipment rental house and rent yourself an ozone generator. You want something that puts out 2-3Kmgph. Dont put it in the car, rather pump its output into the car through a hose (rigging something up with a shopvac hose works pretty well. Then run that for 6-8 hours. Followup with a second vacuuming and then you can start using wet cleaners like windex, or interior cleaner sprays.

I would also suggest your post ozone cleanup include removing the seats and carpets and most of the panels and making sure its good and dry under and behind everything before you reassemble.

It looks bad now Im sure of that, but you might be suprised at how nice you can get it with the right techniques.

Both of mine are blue interior. The '89 is blue outside/blue inside. '87 is black outside/blue inside.

And in short.. yes the gen3 3sgte will fit in the st162 chassis..

Here's my '89 GTS with a st215 mated to an e153 transmission (gen4 3sgte).

Also the FWD --> AWD conversion is gonna be a PITA... you'd be better off finding a wrecked alltrac (ie blown motor/something) to fix up. Someone here has a halftrac/alltrac (actually in AZ too). It was a LOT of work IIRC (whole rear pan from seats back was cut out and an alltrac welded in, full rear suspension overhaul, etc).

There's no wrecked All-Tracs where I am, but I can definitely order an engine and tranny for under $2,000..

Honestly, I'm down for doing the work. I'm not gonna bother with another FWD car.. anything past 280 hp and all you get is torque steer and wasted power.

I don't care if I have to put a race gas tank in the hatch, or have to cut and weld the odd thing.. and the suspension will be coilovers anyway..

Another reason I wouldn't get a whole new car is I love the one I've got. I've been through so much with it and I vowed to never let it go. We have a history. :)

Facime, Thanks for the tips. I will definitely be following through on some of this.

BurnyD Jr, I will send you some pics of the blue rear seat from a parts car I stripped a while ago. I'll get some pics maybe this weekend.

My biggest concern would be wiring and the fuel system. Their is a reason they total flood cars.

Good luck either way.

Yeah, you're totally right. As soon as I saw the moisture behind the gauge cluster, I thought of the wiring. Like I said, definitely needs gutting.

Here's a couple pics I grabbed on my way to work this morning. Sorry for the quality, the camera is awesome, I just apparently suck at holding my arms still.

And on an unrelated note, here's a guy that drove into a hole today. Don't ask me how he missed the signs and the fence, and the fact that there are no gas pumps anymore. Felt bad for the guy tho.

I was a lot younger and didn't have much money back then, but I did my best. It will never die.

thats not even as bad as I expected. I could have that cleaned and sanitized in a day. The key is the Ozone (well besides making sure its totally dry now). Also pick up some DampRid from Home Depot and put that in there as well. I like the kind that comes on a hook meant for hanging in closets.

Yea - I know the feeling - I have a soft spot in my heart for people that appear to have been BORN STUPID. Yet we might assume we could sum it all up with two words:

CELL PHONE

Anyway, that's a great looking 4th gen - best wishes on bringing it back.

Thanks for the data buddy, I am all over that for sure.

He was just an old guy. It was inconceivably dumb, yes.. But I felt bad for him because A) it was probably the end of his driving career and B) it took place in front of a Husky truck stop restaurant full of loud-mouthed construction workers and teenagers talking loud enough to hear him..

If it had been a blonde with a dog in her purse I would've been less gracious lol

And thanks brotha! I love that car... It dies, only to be reborn greater than before!!

BunnyD Jr.............why did you opt with doing the ST215 as opposed to the ST205??
