View Full Version : Question to all you with non-USDM 185s

When I had my all-trac in Italy, one of the cool features it had was a 'fuel economy display', foglight indicator and hazard light indicator in the tach. The speedo didn't work so I bought a new cluster, which I noticed didn't have all that stuff. Now that I'm restoring another AT I see that this one doesn't have any of these features either.

USDM above, Europe one below. Notice the difference in the tach gauges

Now that I looked a little more into the differences between the gauges, the biggest change I see is is this one connection.

So my question is; what connects to that line to make it all work? I think it's a nifty feature that I'd like to carry over to my project.

Try this, take the euro cluster and put it in the car, see if it works, if it does... holy cow does that open up some options for everyone!... and this is a lot of work:

Make a map of what indicator lights are in the lower right corner (front) and what pins they go to on the top, do they match up with the USDM cluster?

Also... I did this when I converted to a GTS (Voltmeter) cluster instead of my regular GT cluster, I got the GTS cluster from a manual car and I have an automatic. I simply cut the green plastic covering the hole for the "O/D OFF" light and scraped off the coating where the light would go and changed the insert the one from my automatic cluster.

I checked the wire harnesses of my currently-gutted AT and found that there's no pin installed for that connection, so an install and hope isn't gonna work this time, lol. Actually I looked a little closer to the circuit sheets on the back of the gauges I have and I noticed a lot of differences in the connections for the speedo and boost/temp/gas, like different pin locations and one sheet is clearly labeled "USA" and the other with nothing. I'm regretting not stripping my old car down to the shell before I had to leave Italy.

I'm still kinda hoping someone that has an imported car with this gauge will chime in and lend some cool info.

I would almost imagine that it's just a TVIS indicator light... granted without a euro BGB to check against can't really say.

I've seen something similar on a older Chevy truck or many it was a subaru but it was more of an analog gauge then a on off light like yours but it reacted just like a vacuum gauge with dumbed down labels like high vacuum equals good mileage and low or in boost then obviously its a thirsty pig. But it could be a simple diaphragm that switches at a certain vacuum reading or the tvis idea makes sense too. Is tvis only rpm dependent or vacuum too? I think vacuum or throttle position has a larger effect on mileage than rpm.. to an extent
