View Full Version : What is Your Car Worth to You?

I was thinking today about the money and time I have invested into my Celica. I pondered this as I was out shopping at PaP for stuff that I could one day use. I did manage to score 2 working cup holders for a 5th gen. Even though I don't need them. I'm sure somebody will.

I know this forum is full of enthusiasts and some of us have what is considered by our wives/girlfriends to be an unhealthy obsession with our car. I am definitely the latter.

I have kept up with every dollar that I've spent on my car but never actually added up the receipts. I surprised the heck out of myself.

$9,500

That includes the $1400 I paid for the car. From the mild performance build on the 5sfe to the 3sgte swap it has now. Suspension, tires, and everything else.

The latest and last thing for a while will be to install the FMIC kit I'm buying from John.

I don't feel bad about any of it. A man has to have his hobbies.

How much have you guys spent on your car?

An exact dollar amount I'm not sure.

I do know though that in the '89 I am about $4 invested into it, expecting this to come to close to $5000 by the time she's roadworthy. The '87 I'm no more than $750 (knocks on wood) .

She is worth enough to me to be here and do what I do here. And to load up and drive a thousand miles to put a new engine in her.

I am on my third set of wheels, seventh or so set of tires, second engine, second transmission, third set of axles, fourth timing belt, second driver's seat, third driver's winder, second and third fenders, third hood...

I wouldn't sell her for any amount of money. I can't imagine parting with her.

I couldn't begin to put a dollar figure on what I have in her, it would be close to $10k though.

You're hardcore in love with Chaos.

This I know because you talked to her as much as you talked to Matt and I.

Chaos and I have a rare bond.

Think Han Solo and The Millennium Falcon...

It's worth $5,000 to me. I currently have a '93 GT and I've told myself that I wouldn't take less than $5,000 if I were to sell it, and that would only be to upgrade to an ST185. Which means I won't be upgrading soon since no one will give me $5k right now because the exterior is so bad. I've got more than $5k in it so far, but you hardly ever get back what you put in.

Tried to PM you, Hook, but you're full. I am one of those persons in need of a cup holder if you'd like to sell one.

I'll be insuring Jasmine for about $5grand once I'm driving here. That way, incase of an accident I can at least get enough to buy another celica & swap the powerplant in.

Well, I paid about 5k for my supra. It has.. I dunno 30k or so in it (I've probably put in 10 of that, and more before swap is complete). But we've had these threads before. As far as the title goes, what is the car worth to ME? Far and away above what anyone would pay for it. I don't know, if someone walked up to me today and said they'd buy it for 20k I might take that, but it wouldn't be a given. Sentimental value there.

I payed $1100 for my GT-S. The State values it at $400. It's safe to say that my car is worth more to me than most people think it should be lol

My 7th gen has nothing special in it. Its worth to me what the market says it is.

My MR2 on the other hand... I paid 7 for it. It prolly has 7 worth of aftermarket parts on it. Hell, I know it has about 3500 worth in WHEELS on it. (Yeah. BBS LMs cost about 900 new, and mine have been remachined and refinished, so add on another 150 per wheel on that).

I cant even see myself selling my MR2. Id put its pricetag above 10k for sure tho.

Gotta agree with y'all. Yeah I put a $5000 tag on it, but I know I could repair it if anything happened to it for that much... if joe schmoe wants to buy it .....

I'm glad I'm disorganized and have no idea what I've spent. The number would not be pretty.

But as I tell everyone who asks when I'll get rid of them for something better, I'll probably be buried with them.

Well - "what is my car worth to me" - and what have I spent - these might be two different things.

I bought my first Celica a few years back - an STX with a 4AFE - for $1900, later I thought - "man! I payed WAY too much for that car!".

I based this assumption on the fact that later I bought a really nice '92 GT for $1750, a '91 Alltrac with a working JDM 3SGTE for $2400, and a '93 GTS parts car with a really solid body.

I take it all back - that little ST and 4AFE are like the "rock of Gibraltar" - the thing never gives an ounce of problems - is not very particular, and just runs like a watch. I love all my cars - but the ST has a special place in my heart.

So I have paid (for vehicals):

1900 - '92 STX
1750 - '92 GT
2400 - '91 Alltrac
425 - '93 GTS
================
6475 total outlay on cars

I sold the GT with a blown head gasket to my daughter for a "super deal" of $900 - so subtract that amd come up with:

$5575 - just in car purchases.

Add to that - about $1000 in parts I have used or bought to hoard - especially $500 for a set of C-ONE coilovers for the Alltrac.

So - now I am up to $6575 - and all I have is a BEAUTIFUL running ST, an Alltrac that barely runs around the block, and a GTS that doesn't run at all but has a pretty good body (no rust - one dent).

Still - I shall yank victory from defeat - in hindsight I might have made a few better choices - but basically I think I'm on the right path.

At the end of the day - my original purchase - the ST with the 4AFE - was the "really good deal".

And...BTW..I don't know why I love Celicas but I do!

$4500.

are those cupholders grey/black? if so I desperately need them both if you're willing to sell.

1987 GT-S Coupe - cost $1900 but I wouldn't have sold it for anything. It only went because my parents made me and I couldn't afford to fix it.
1992 GT-S - cost $5000 plus probably $3000 in parts puts me at $8000 into it. I'd let it go for $3500 if I decide to sell.
1991 GTFour RC - cost $2000 and $2500 into maintenance, $600 in mods puts me at $5100 and counting. I wouldn't take a penny less than $9000 if someone tried to buy it but it's probably worth about what I'm into it for on the market.

Terracar

Easily $7k into it (including purchase price) and it still runs like ass. This may simply be my expectations being too high. I am used to a V6 that claws for traction when you hit the pedal, the 'trac well it accelerates... like a 5sfe Camry with an auto.

As for worth to me? Sadly and compounded by the last 2 days of disappointment in trying to narrow root causes down, I would have to say she is worth $6k. If someone offered me $6k, I would take it, they could have my parts hoard and the spare engines. Then again, I doubt the wife would let me sell it lol.

The 6th gen... Probably around $12k with a $4k purchase price.

The 7th gen... Probably around $9500 with a $6500 purchase price.

That does not include tires or insurance.

i bought my ST for 250 and she needed a new distributor that i got for 40 bucks from a junkyard. She also needed the driver side door rehung. Then the timing belt broke and that cost me 300, new half shafts was 140, GT-S fenders were 100,7th gen wheels 5 lug conversion and rear disc conversion was around 600, All Trac hood was 50 from the pick a part, 4AGZE was 800 from the junkyard and god only knows how much the rebuild on that engine is going end up costing me. so far the price of my celica is 2300 and that includes all the odd and end pieces that we all need we buy a used car, and i would not get rid of her for any amount of money.

I think I'm up there with Murg when it comes to personal value, and maybe 75% cost of Chaos. I know I put a good $3k into the suspension, not including all the little here-and-there's with the rest of the build/upkeep and original $1k purchase. I have a habit of telling people that my car is worth more than thier lives as far as I'm concerned, so they better be ready if they ever hit me. Prime isn't just a car to me, he's more like a mechanical best friend. No price tag, ever.

240, id take 2500, so i can get another

truck, i dunno yet, ill see once i finish him up in a few weeks or less

3rd gen, id rather die than sell him

My Celica spoke to me again. She asked for Leather seats.

I told her how she has no vagina....and that she shouldn't be so demanding.

She threatened me with a rough idle and constant backfiring.

That's when you tell her she needs this "upgrade" before any more purchases.

Counting the purchase price, I've probably got about $6K in mine. I keep a log of the work I've done and parts I've replaced but haven't kept up with how much money I've spent.

Close to 10k once its done in a couple months.

Could of bought one in mint condition and not had to do any body work but I'm young and naive..

In the end I think I'll be more proud of driving a car I restored myself.

I only payed $2200 for it, and have only been driving it a month, but if you want it I might start considering it at about 10k lol :)

I probably have about $4500 into the car. Paid $1200 on ebay, spent about $600 flying to get it and driving it home from CA to MT one cold January night... The rest is all paint and fixing it up.

I traded in my new Scion TC after a year so I could get a '93 MR2 Turbo.. and just last week picked up a '91 Alltrac! :yay:

Best decision I ever made!

I have prolly upwards of 11k invested in my GT-S, i would let it sit until i regained interest before i sold it. I plan on getting an Alltrac, even when i get one the GT-S will still be around.
