View Full Version : What exhaust manifold is this?

I bought this 3SGE engine - for various reasons - mainly because it has been rebuilt completely on the bottom end - to use in my '93 GTS "parts car".

This is a 1987 3SGE with an ICS turbo.

I bought the engine with the intention to use it in a '93 GTS. I realize this will be a big job - yet I think I can do it.

I am wondering - where is the exhaust manifold from?

The little stub of a down pipe needs to be replaced. It comes within ~1/16th" of the oil pan and also is only 2" diameter. I have looked at the flange bolt pattern and compared it to my 3SGTE and it seems to be different.

I ask mainly because - the thing has an external wastegate (Tiel) which bolts on to the flange on the manifold I would assume was orginally meant for the O2 sensor - and the wastegate output is just a straight pipe.

The thing came with a wideband and controller - but no place to put the wideband - thus the need to come up with a different downpipe.

Hee are some pics of this engine that I plan to create my abomination of a GTS:

I am thinking way in advance here - as I don't plan to do anything with this engine till this winter. The thing came with a "piggy back" - STM-6 ECU - and a crude wideband controller.

I want to spend nearly "zero" dollars just to install it and see if it is viable - but I will need to come up with something to marry the exhaust to what I have in the GTS - and a place for the wideband.

Turbonetics, cast with t3 flange. Don't use that wastegate port, get a turbo with internal gate instead.

Well - as mentioned - I don't want to spend any money on this at all till I make sure about the engine.

If it were up to me - I would de-turbo the thing - as I already have a turbo car and really just want to make the GTS a road car.

Yet the pistons are new - and 8.5:1 comp ratio - so if I "de-turboed" the thing I think I would end up with a "slug".

Back to my original point - is the standard 3SGTS exhaust flange the same or different than the one I need? If I need a different one - what car do I look to get it off of to make a new downpipe?

Can I have the blue valve covers? lol

From what I recall the gen1/gen2 3sgte and gen1 3sge exhaust manifolds share the same bolt pattern. You should be able to drop either manifold on either motor and call it a day.

Yellow head is yummy - not

Gen1-3 headers will fit, BEAMS won't

Being a GE head/block I doubt you have GTE pistons, do a compression check and see or lift the head
The GTE pistons will work fine, just leave the carbon on them
